164 years ago today, Lincoln gave his "RIGHT MAKES MIGHT" speech at Cooper Union. William Cullen Bryant published the speech on the front page of The Post. While in NYC, Lincoln stayed at The Astor Hotel. Read about Bryant, Cooper, and Astor in .

p.s. While in NYC, Lincoln sat for this famous Matthew Brady Photo. Lincoln claimed that the NYC day (and Brady and Cooper) made him president. @histodons @history

Since it is Black History Month, I thought I would share this blog post I wrote about Jane Matilda Bolin--the first Black woman to serve as a judge in the United States. Her story is pretty inspiring. And, New York City should rename the Queens-Midtown Tunnel to honor her! @histodons https://www.historyinthemargins.com/2023/04/25/jane-matilda-bolin-another-guest-post-by-rebecca-bratspies/

For my international audience (because i can't believe my audience could have missed this).

After the recent demonstations there has been a popularisation of the meme. People from all walks of live appropriate symbols from their lived experience and combine it with the antifascist logo for something amusing. Here are some samples with alt-texts providing a translation/explanation. A thread 🧵1/10 :

On 11/5/68, Shirley Chisholm became the first Black woman elected to Congress. "Fighting" Shirley Chisholm rocked the House to its foundations. We all benefit from her trailblazing legacy. The First Self-Proclaimed Drag Queen Was a Formerly Enslaved Man

In the late 19th century, William Dorsey Swann’s private balls attracted unwelcome attention from authorities and the press

by Cari Shane, June 9, 2023

"In the late 1880s, a formerly enslaved man named William Dorsey Swann started hosting private balls known as , a name possibly derived from 'grand rag,' an antiquated term for masquerade balls. Held in secret in Washington, D.C., these parties soon caught authorities’ attention.

"As the Washington Critic reported in January 1887, police officers who raided one such gathering were surprised to encounter six Black men 'dressed in elegant female attire,' including 'corsets, bustles, long hose and slippers.' The following April, the Evening Star reported on a raid that targeted men in 'female attire of many colors,' as well as 'gaudy costumes of silk and satin.' On both occasions, authorities arrested the party guests and charged them with 'being suspicious characters.'

"Journalist and historian Channing Gerard Joseph first learned about Swann’s parties in 2005, when he was a graduate student browsing an online newspaper database. The article he came across, a Washington Post story from April 1888, spotlighted Swann, 'who was arrayed in a gorgeous dress of cream-colored satin.' He 'rushed toward the officers and tried to prevent their entering.'"

Both Texas and Florida are the leaders in the fascism race. Books? Education? Why be intelligent when you have the religious fanatics to think for you?

It's not enough that Texas leads in the number of books that have been banned in the last year they are now threatening to pull public funding from libraries that have Drag Story Hour where Cat In The Hat is read to kids.

But that's not all:

This new bill allows the Texas Education commission to ban history text books that admit to LGBTQ people being a part of history.

They can also issue bans for history that leans too much into Racism Is Bad And It Does Exist or if the history condones public uprising (civil rights marches). The books must also give both sides of a political/social movement.

If the text books don't offer glowing pro-America versions of all history then that is also another reason to ban it.
