Oh yeah, and btw, thanks to #XMPP I deleted my Matrix account and got rid of Element and Signal on my phone !! 😎
Couldn't be happier nor more satisfied !! 😁🌈😁
#20Initiatives - Building strong supervision of Justice and Home Affairs Interoperability Framework
With the new framework for #interoperability, #EDPS is preparing for effective enforcement to protect the rights of non-EU citizens travelling to EU https://europa.eu/!xKNmTw#EDPSXX
News from the machine room: the pure #rust end-to-end encryption engine, "rpgp", saw quite some work and a new release in recent weeks and now @hko released a higher level "rpgpie" interface for application developers ( see https://fosstodon.org/@hko/111997998005869515 ) which also powers running the IETF #OpenPGP#interoperability test suite quite successfully .... Delta Chat's security-audited encryption engine is in fact used from several other projects and in other contexts these days and we are happy about it!
The Sad Reality: Firefox 123 is out with broken site reporting tool
Users of the Firefox web browser may report broken sites to Mozilla. The main idea behind the feature is to help Mozilla address compatibility issues in Firefox.
Firefox has a much smaller userbase than the Chromium-based browsers. Multiple companies, incl ...continues
I've read that #WhatsApp wants to interoperate with other #messenger applications, to align with #DigitalMarketsAct. My problem with their #UX approach is that it's only planned as a third-party tab, with no promise of a setting that would place all the chats on the single page.
I realize they have security reservations, but I smell a dark pattern here: only do I message my people on WhatsApp from Matrix, they'd have to change tabs, making a chat with me stick like a sore thumb - or not stick at all.
Hot bottom-line: hiding behind a tab is no different than cutting off #interoperability altogether. Multi-messenger chats should become a first-party feature in synchronous software, to comply with #DMA. Targeted apps that don't care about such regulation have no future.
I don't like the use of the word "fight" here, but this is a good overview of the issues and what's at stake.
Money quote: "Soon, Meta’s Threads app plans to become interoperable with ActivityPub networks like Mastodon. Flipboard and #Automattic, owner of #WordPressDotCom and #tumblr are also betting on ActivityPub."
The US government makes a $42 million bet on 5G Open RAN (O-RAN) cell networks
The US government has committed $42 million to further the development of the 5G Open RAN (O-RAN) standard that would allow wireless providers to mix and match cellular hardware and software, opening up a bigger market for third-party equipment that’s cheaper ...continues
WhatsApp shared first details on how they will comply with the #DMA. We are critical of the Signal protocol, as there has never been a complete specification that allows others to implement the protocol securely. This has been one of the main reasons to develop MLS. We co-initiated the MIMI working group to build a protocol around MLS to enable #interoperability between different messengers in a secure and privacy preserving way.
We are positively overwhelmed with the outpouring of support 🚀
People are responding to our call for help! We've also had a number of smaller organizations show up and begin the process of becoming supporting members.
This is encouraging progress, though we still have a lot of work to do to hit our fundraising goals.
Yep. Totally true. Apple is only pro-users up to the extent this is good for its bottom-line
#EU#Apple#DMA#Oligopolies#Interoperability: "For one thing, Apple will only allow European customers to run alternative browser engines. That means that Firefox will have to "build and maintain two separate browser implementations — a burden Apple themselves will not have to bear."
(One wonders how Apple will treat Americans living in the EU, whose Apple accounts still have US billing addresses – these people will still be entitled to the browser choice that Apple is grudgingly extending to Europeans.)
All of this sends a strong signal that Apple is planning to run the same playbook with the DMA that Google and Facebook used on the GDPR: ignore the law, use lawyerly bullshit to chaff regulators, and hope that European federalism has sufficiently deep cracks that it can hide in them when the enforcers come to call.
But Apple is about to get a nasty shock. For one thing, the DMA allows wronged parties to start their search for justice in the European federal court system – bypassing the Irish regulators and courts. For another, there is a global movement to check corporate power, and because the tech companies do the same kinds of fuckery in every territory, regulators are able to collaborate across borders to take them down."
