#Threads is testing federation for a few selected profiles. I'm now following @mosseri! It's one-way for now, but it's exciting. It's a step towards the interoperable social web that we've been advocating for 🙂
@Gargron Ok. I’ll behave. You have to start with assuming good intentions.
If actual #interoperability appears, where Threads users can find other ActivityPub users as easily as Threads users, and #Fediverse users aren’t made to jump through hoops to get followed in there, I’m all for it.
If #Meta doesn’t send in it’s goons and exercise it’s immense monetary might to take over nonprofits and boards that decide the future of the #protocol, I’m all for it.
"Modular design hinges on the simplicity and abstract nature of the interface definition between the modules. A design in which the insides of each module need to know all about each other is not a modular design but an arbitrary partitioning of the bits."
This is one of the big criticisms of #ActivityPub. It's not enough just to implement the spec, I'm told. You have to test it against other implementations and tweak yours until it does what you expect.
I coined the term for current #ActivityPub development reality as Whack-a-mole Driven Development (WDD) where each dev tries to retain #interoperability against moving targets of each app they integrate with, and on breakages needs to delve in that app's codebase and issue tracker to fix.
A bit more than 5 years ago, I decided to really dive into the #fediverse and booked my own #Mastodon instance at @mastohost on 2018-10-10. I had a few accounts spread around some other instances before that. So here I am. 5 years later. A lot has changed. And mostly for the better! What was a geeky experiment for some time has become a vibrant world of knowledge, fun and respectful conversations. On to the next 5 years!
Finished reading "The Internet Con: How to Seize the Means of Computation" by @pluralistic and it was a fantastic read. It distilled a very complex topic into a clear and concise thesis. Highly recommended!

Journalists are realising Mastodon and the Fediverse is not so complicated to use after all
As Notopoulos writes, the Fediverse is a better, more user-centric social media concept than the one we currently have, where you amass followers on a single platform then lose them if that platform dies or becomes bad and you decide to quit. Federated social ...continues
