Among many things, use of the word “#Zionist” sets off alarms for the many different people who hear it. Is it pure #antisemitism? Or is it an attack on the Israeli govt, whose snr leaders have expressed concern that the #ICC will issue arrest warrants for them? Is it an assault on the right of #Israel to exist? Or is it a demand that it not continue to exist w/in its current contours & constructs w/the #Palestinian people?
For some college presidents, there seems to be a belief that by ripping away the tents & clearing the courtyards, they are also expunging any #hate & hurt from their campus — as if #antisemitism lives in these makeshift shelters & not in the heart. They demand that the protests be polite, convenient & perfect, or in the words of Princeton’s president, that the protests adhere to “time, place & manner” regulations.
They call police to make arrests. They suspend students & declare them trespassers on their own campus. But the very meaning of a protest is to disrupt the status quo, to bring thoughtless momentum to a halt, to underscore precisely how imperfect the world really is.
On college campuses, the tents represent one of many truths. In addition to the savagery of #Hamas on #Oct7, along w/the cruel holding of #hostages, alongside the shames of #antisemitism & #Islamaphobia, Palestinian #civilians are being killed by the thousands.
Excerpt (Part 1/2): ...Spielberg said: “Those who can not remember the past are condemned to repeat it. I am increasingly alarmed that we may be condemned to repeat history – to once again have to fight for the very right to be Jewish.”
He added: “The echoes of history are unmistakable in our current climate. The rise of extremist views has created a dangerous environment, and radical intolerance leads a society to no longer celebrate differences but instead conspire to demonise those who are different to the point of creating ‘the Other’… This is happening alongside anti-Muslim, Arab, and Sikh discrimination. The creation of ‘the Other’ and the dehumanisation of any group based on their differences, is the foundation of fascism.”
Fat chance. Head office is complicit. When you have a Tory member of the HoL, Warsi, decrying it ( and being ignored as she has been for years) you know nothing will change.
Remember this is a party who cheered for the Blackshirts 60 years ago and they have simply shifted their hatred. Bravermann was Home Secretary for gods sake.
@fkamiah17 the #Conservative Party has a poor reputation on #SouthAfrica and in having the morality to distinguish the oppressed from terrorists . The Conservative Party has a history of #Islamaphobia. They support money. #Sunak has no balls and no morality.
It does a disservice to all Jewish people to conflate opposition to human rights abuses and war crimes with Anti-Semitism. Failure to to act on these injustices is what radicalizes people and spreads support for violent uprisings.
Does anyone seriously see the ongoing domination and subjugation of Palestinians as a pathway to peace and safety? The extreme violence of the current regime let alone the consistent cruelty of past administrations; and ultimately the indifference of the global community, is what has led us to this moment.
If we zoom out, and honestly and objectively look at a 25 mile wide by 7 mile wide slice of land enclosed by high walls and high tech military barriers where all the 2 million people inside are the same ethnicity and nationality, live in abject poverty and without basic human rights its hard not to see it as a fundamental injustice that must be corrected. The appropriate response would be to say "not in our name", and to support peaceful efforts to make things right.
We need meaningful discussion of a pathway to peaceful coexistence from intelligent influential leaders. Its a bummer to see so many post that claim to be about protecting us as Jewish people but in fact potentially leave us in more danger.
Ceasefire and negotiation of the return of the hostages is the only option and it needs to be the beginning of real change. Bombing only puts the hostages and all Jewish people in more danger.
Ultimately the real anti-Semites are empowered by this whole situation. Being Jewish should not be synonymous with support for radical Zionist politics or committing human rights abuses. I fear as a community we let our trauma blind us to damage we are doing to others. Hurt people hurt people. We need to end the cycles of violence before it spins completely out of control.
The author of this succinctly put into words what I have struggled to explain. Feel free to save and post the image in your circles. #Antisemitism#Islamaphobia#Gaza#Israel
In Plainfield, IL, a 71 year old man is in custody for stabbing to death an 6-year-old Palestinian child named Wadea Al-Fayoume & nearly killing his mother.😓
The murderer stabbed the child 26 times & yelled "you Muslims must die!"😳
No charges filed yet. Police are investigating.
Please be safe my friends. Be diligent and look out for each other. God help us.
This is in a town very close to me. It is a very typical "small-town America" community, with ~45K people. The (mostly farming) town was previously best known for being devastated by a tornado in 1990. After the tornado, an influx of people moved there from the larger suburbs, creating a mostly politically diverse community.
This man's neighbors say he was "eccentric" because he had strange posters & signs outside his house for the past few years, on political and religious topics. His yard was overcrowded with clutter. He had no police history of violence.
