Labor Day, observed on the first Monday in September in the United States and Canada, honors the contributions of workers and the labor movement. It symbolizes the end of summer and celebrates the social and economic achievements of workers, while also advocating for workers' rights and fair labor practices. It's a day of rest and various activities, including parades and picnics.
Labor Day is meant to inspire us to recognize the dignity of labor, the power of collective action, and the pursuit of fairness in the workplace. It reminds us that ordinary people can achieve extraordinary change through unity and determination.
However, one downside of Labor Day is its commercialization, as it's often associated with sales and consumerism, overshadowing its original purpose of honoring workers' rights.
Additionally, some argue that it has lost significance in raising awareness about ongoing labor issues and inequalities.
Oy! That was a hottawa #LabourDay#Parade. My phone overheated and I couldn't get it to turn on to take any photos. Nice to see reps from all kinds of labour unions from across the city walking together. And enjoy the traditional labour day family picnic together at McNabb Park. #ottawa
My Dad, Alan, between two of his brothers, Robert and George in this photo here, taken when they all were retired. Dad, a skilled machinist, was a #union man all his life. Came to Canada in ‘53 worked for Rolls Royce Aircraft engine division, Ford in Windsor until the ‘54 strike and on the Avro Arrow until Black Friday in ‘59. #LabourDay#LaborDay#solidarity
On this Labour Day, let's reflect on the true cost of billionaires and ponder the toll of a system that relies on such deep inequality. In a system that allows a few to destroy the planet, the true cost is you.
Let's strive and hope for a world where the benefits of our labour are shared equitably and billionaires don't and can't exist.
Today I'm celebrating my husband who's been a United States Steelworker for the past 40 years year! Hope you enjoy this piece I made for him called "Union Strong Bulldog" Happy Labor Day everyone:)
This Labor Day, please remember, that if left to their own devices, most corporations will make you slaves, kill the planet, and fly any flag that will get them rich quick.
HR is there only to make sure whatever happens, or is currently happening, cannot hurt the company or cannot be traced back to the company.
For your part, HR is there to address a few basic Q&As and push paperwork through their system, but that's it. Always document everything and never blindly trust HR regardless of where you work.
