March 11 marks four years since was declared a pandemic. But while much of society has moved on from , quarantining, and isolating, some still feel the effects of the pandemic every day & is a constant struggle

If anyone asks why I'm still masking up, I'm going to tell them because it's been almost 3 years since anyone in my state died of the plague:

Sometimes I wonder about the world we'd be living in if everyone had just stayed the fuck home, calmed the fuck down, and masked the fuck up in 2020.

Sorry to link to Twitter but remember that thread I did recently-ish on to make my respirator more comfortable through added ?

It turns out that humid air is a lot better at reducing the amount of aerosol virus that gets into your lungs. And that masking alone can actually increase that humidity even if the room you are presently in is not humid enough.

Worth a read! 🙂

Living in fear vs having the tools:

ER Doc reflects after CDC removes 5 day isolation guidance:

  • "Covid is no longer so different from the seasonal flu and a host of other respiratory viruses, an inconvenience for most of us but a dangerous and potentially mortal threat for some."
  • "We have the knowledge and simple tools needed to protect each other."

She doesn't name the tools, other than wearing a mask when sick.

I love backcountry camping. But that means taking precautions like:

  • Wearing long pants
  • Wearing sunblock & sun hat
  • Purifying my water
  • Never storing food in my tent.

When people talk about not living in fear from Covid, I imagine them frolicking naked in the woods, gulping beaver water, and storing bacon in their tents.

At one point does not living in fear become actively chasing sickness?

America continuing to eat its seed corn: this time sacrificing the health of an entire generation of young people. To what end?

The largest group of people afflicted is younger than you think: Those aged 25-39 have the highest rates of long COVID, closely followed by adults aged 40-54

Encountered a surprisingly high number of folks wearing masks while grocery shopping today. Including spotting N95s two stores in a row (Bulk Barn & Shoppers). Pleasing.

I'm not here to hold hands. I'm not here for comfort. In fact, my goal is to introduce folks to an amount of existential discomfort; to overwhelm them, so that they have no choice but to stop pretending and spend the energy to protect themselves, maybe even others.

I'm not here to help you roleplay like the world is in an even semi-functional place. Twenty shoes are dropping at once.

There is a lot to do, but it starts with safety and a caring community. That's Step 0.

Picking up the groceries right now. There's a reason I don't go inside anymore.

Right now I hear multiple customers in the parking lot hacking away with deep, productive coughs. 😨

necessary to prevent infection even in the youngest sections of the population.

Nachricht von meiner Long Covid-Freundin.

#CDCsays AIDS is not even as bad as Herpes anymore, Herpes is more common even. So go ahead a have unprotected sex. Even if you have signs of an STD, if it's kinda improving and you don't have a fever, it's fine to spread it to others. Some people might want to use a condom (like those who know we've lost our goddamn mind!).

Nah, wearing a facemask isn't "virtue-signalling." You know what is though? Ignoring a mass disabling event that is an ongoing pandemic and then contracting Covid and suddenly "isolating" for some bullshit insufficient number of days, acting like you suddenly give a shit. That, my friends, is most certainly "virtue-signalling." Give me a break.

In a notice sent to local health-care professionals on Thursday, the city’s public health agency said the case reported in , on Feb. 27 involved a person who had not travelled abroad, nor been in contact with another known case.

“Local community transmission is therefore possible,” the notice states.

There is a fantastic presentation on covid-19 highlighted in @violetblue 's Pandemic Roundup this week. It was written for heath care professionals but is relevant for anyone looking for a cogent summary of what covid really does, how it can potentially adversely effect any part of one's life, and strategies for helping those suffering from it.

As always, these Roundups are free and well worth supporting:

It is so weird how many parents have adopted this mindset that it is normal that your kids keep constantly bringing in sicknesses from kindergarden and school.

No, it is not normal that parents let their sick kids to come to these spaces to infect your kids. It is not normal that measels, rubella, covid, flu, infuluenza, and foot-mouth-and-hand disease are now common.

When I was a kid, I barely ever got sick - because parents would keep sick kids AT HOME.

You can do this too.

hiisikoloart,
@hiisikoloart@writing.exchange avatar

Not only that, you can wear a mask and avoid infections. You can TEACH your kids to wash their hands - I was, most kids my age were, and not surprisingly we got sick way less.

I have never even had scabies, and only lice once!

It only takes parents to care for their kids - and themselves. Don't go to work when sick. Mask up to avoid getting sick. Advocate that sick kids wont be allowed in. Lead by example.

This is not rocket science.

Healthy people really act like health is just given.
They'll always be healthy - nothing will change that!

Except health is a fragile thing even without an ongoing pandemic. You could lose it any day. These days your body could just give up under the load of virus being fed to it every day. Inhaled with every breath.

Then reality will hit.
Health is a privilege, and it can be lost.
And no medical system will give it back to you when you have chronic condition.

I have seen news of so many healthy people shocked about how they are (not) treated when they have acquired long-term illnesses that it is tragicomic.

What, you guys think that patients will be treated nice? You really truly believed that there is House M.D. in every hospital who will seek the root reason and magically fix you just because you asked?

Ha!

It doesn't work like in TV, you better and pray it wont get worse.
