Well, I have finally installed F-Droid on my Android mobile as I continue to move away from Big Tech. Most of the open source applications I'm using have an official version on the store! Signal seems to be the exception, so any thoughts on Element as a possible replacement please? Obviously, views on other alternatives just as welcome! #fdroid#bigtech#foss#opensource#signal#element#privacy#security
Signal is working on the ability to set nicknames and add notes to contacts! Notes and nicknames will only be visible to you and will be end-to-end encrypted.
This feature is currently available in Signal for Android v7.2, but it will likely come to other platforms soon. Please note that this feature is currently under active development, so its design and functionality are subject to change.
For several years I avoid #SMS like a plague because because most people have a habit to keep years of message history and I don't like this. And now they would keep them in cloud accounts by default??
So when someone would want to talk via text, I wouldn't respond until it would be in #Signal.
(Thank you, @signalapp for disappearing messages and phone number hiding!)
40 % of the infrastructure expenditure is burnt to send #SMS codes.
I was forced to receive an SMS from Signal more than once after the first time. The SMS arrived from a sender I had never heard about. Signal's subprocessors are not listed on https://signal.org/legal/#privacy-policy (which doesn't even acknowledge the existence of #GDPR).
Not sure when these were added, but I've noticed in the latest @signalapp beta that these handy but short tips on avoiding scams and alike in your inbox now exist. Good work to whoever had the idea :)
(Apologies if the media is in the wrong order lmao)
#Telegram is being temporarily blocked in Spain. Will this trigger an uptick in #Signal account registration?
"Spain's High Court has ordered the suspension of messaging app Telegram's services in the country after media companies complained it was allowing users to upload their content without permission"
So, I've been arguing with myself over whether I should resurrect my #Telegram account or not. From various sources, I get the impression that their platform isn't all that secure despite their claims. If memory serves, one of the sources said they wouldn't trust it with anything more than a casual conversation, and definitely wouldn't trust it with more sensitive topics. I'm not interested in using #Meta services, so things like #Messenger & #WhatsApp are not options I'd consider. At this point, my messaging options are #Signal and #Matrix even though the latter isn't the most #accessible option. Heck, when you get down to it, the former has a few accessibility annoyances on #Android which is the mobile platform I use. Decisions, decisions...
Just had a video call on #Signal with Buba Kuteyah, who lives in the #Gambia and has neither refrigeration nor running #water, as is typical in his area. He and I are writing a petition re: GSRMs to the #IMF & WB and organizing a global general strike. Until we have the numbers to ensure this petition will be heard and addressed appropriately, we are building autonomous mesh network communications infrastructure to mediate free south-to-north labor organization.
Facebook messenger, WhatsApp, and Signal LLC may be interoperable in the near future.
Facebook was forced by the EU DMA to open up, and is complying without issue. Facebook/Meta will interoperate with services that use the signal protocol. (maybe Google Messages too!)
This is incredible!
It may soon be possible to use a signal client to contact people on WhatsApp and Facebook.
Meta implementing interoperability on the signal protocol could cause signal to become the standard universal messaging protocol.
Signal is an encrypted messaging application that supports post-quantum cryptography.
Google Gmail is the email provider for Signal Messenger LLC, this is the company that develops the Signal messaging application and the Signal protocol.
Signal support can be contacted from within the application by going to Signal Settings (profile) > Help > Contact Us.
After a long hesitation I finally installed #Signal. Along with Fb Messenger, WhatsApp, Instagram, Google Messages… it is yet another #messaging app on which I have to make myself available. For only a dozen of contacts listed, I still wonder if it is worth it.
“... #Signal can’t interoperate with another messaging platform, without them raising their #privacy bar significantly... Because we don’t just encrypt the #contents of messages... We encrypt #metadata, ... your profile #name, your profile #photo, who’s in your #contact list, #who you talk to, #when you talk to them. That would need to be the level of privacy and security agreed across the board... before we could consent to interoperate.”
