Rly glad the mods are too busy protecting billionaire revenue streams vs. help keep the (hopefully declining number of) users of SO safe. https://www.sonatype.com/blog/pypi-crypto-stealer-targets-windows-users-revives-malware-campaign

At CHI earlier this month: “Is Stack Overflow Obsolete? An Empirical Study of the
Characteristics of ChatGPT Answers to Stack Overflow Questions”.

> Our analysis shows that 52% of ChatGPT answers contain incorrect information and 77% are verbose.

> … our user study participants … overlooked the misinformation in the ChatGPT answers 39% of the time.

I'm deleting my shit from - they keep changing them back to the previous revisions and now they're telling me:

"Please stop vandalising your post. This is not your data. By posting here you've agreed to SO's ToS and licensing the content under CC-BY-SA..."

This just makes me want to delete everything of mine on corporate social media, and I pretty much have tbh

Funny how the "frequently asked questions" for the #StackOverflow #OpenAI thing does not list the question "How do I opt out of this?" (nor the answer to it).

that @JasonPunyon curated and compiled a whopping archive of answers from and assorted Q&A sites in a minimal sqlite format, where they can be downloaded and analyzed offline:

Amazing effort and great idea. Reminded me of the archives that kept of it (alongside Wikipedia and similar projects), but more streamlined and cross-platform. Nice.

My different take on

Not all things are meant to last forever. Their impact was HUGE to developer space. It made programming so much easier and the model worked for over a decade plus! An incredible place to go learn and find answers when you ran into some most ridiculous problems at work.

Now, their traffic has been dying. They didn't jump to AI, they tried to resist it. But developers left them, and have been leaving them. What are they supposed to do? lay down and die?

Well, fuck you Stack Overflow. I deleted my answers and have now deleted all my accounts.

It's hard to imagine #StackOverflow made their decision without considering the fate #Twitter and #Reddit suffered. That they willingly chose to burn the remaining goodwill they had with their users is bewildering.

Right now, people are having active conversations here on #Mastodon about an #ActivityPub / #Fediverse replacement for SO.

Logged in to Stack Overflow for the first time in 10 years to check exactly what have I left there.. Now, since the few answers I've given are CC-BY, so they must attribute them to me, if I make a GDPR data subject request for them to delete all my data, logic dictates that whatever they think about text as personal data, they must delete the answers, because they can't attribute them to me as a deleted account. Right?

jamesmarshall, to stackoverflow
@jamesmarshall@sfba.social avatar

As we all know by now, Stack Overflow has alienated their primary contributors by letting OpenAI train on SO's (CC-protected) content, and forcefully preventing countermeasures. Therefore, SO content will likely become worse and even more outdated as time goes on.

So, time to migrate. What's the preferred open source, community-run alternative to SO for everyone to migrate to? Here's one list of alternative software to run such sites:

https://meta.stackexchange.com/questions/2267/are-there-any-clones-alternatives-for-running-a-stack-exchange-style-qa-site

Which site(s) are gaining traction? If none, who wants to start one?

As an EU citizen, I'm using my right to deletion to get to remove my data for me.

Here is the link to the form: https://policies.stackoverflow.co/data-request/

I requested a copy of my data for my personal backup and to confirm if they fulfilled my request.

This Stack Overflow/OpenAI news is an absolute disaster and a dark day in the history of online communities.

It's hard to read this as anything other than Stack Overflow being desperate for cash. Reports are already surfacing about how badly they handled it, and I expect that will only worsen.

Lol. Wanted to remove some of my answers from and can't login suddenly.

A cew hours ago everything was fine. Password reset doesn't work.

I guess they'll do everything to keep the content for OpenAI. 💩
