I've updated my ansible-dev-pc¹ repository to support the recently released Ubuntu 24.04 (hence my discussion on getting .NET to behave). This supports Desktop Ubuntu 22.04/24.04, Pop!_OS 22.04, and Ubuntu 22.04/24.04 in WSL 2.
I'm still waiting for Pop!_OS 24.04 to be released so I can verify it there as well.
🇬🇧 Today is a shopping Sunday (normally in Poland all stores are closed), so my girls (wife and daughter) went shopping, and I decided to install the new #Ubuntu 24.04 LTS on my #Getac for special tasks 😎
🇵🇱 Dzisiaj niedziela handlowa, więc moje dziewczyny (żona i córka) pojechały na shopping, a ja postanowiłem zainstalować nowe #Ubuntu 24.04 LTS na moim #Getac do zadań specjalnych 😎
Time for this week's #Linux and #OpenSource News video!
In this one, we have the law forcing #TikTok to sell or be banned in the US being passed, we have an article explaining why #Google Search is so much worse these days, we have the release of #Fedora 40 and #Ubuntu 24.04, and #Nvidia contributing to the NVK open source drivers:
I know Canonical really wants to push their stupid walled garden with Snaps, but c'mon. That's just insane. :blobfoxlaughsweat: Snaps are the reason I'll generally not recommend Ubuntu anymore. It's too much to explain to a Linux newbie why Firefox boots slowly and Steam crashes.
> La nouvelle mouture d’Ubuntu est disponible au téléchargement depuis hier soir. Comme toutes les versions LTS, elle est garantie 5 ans, qui peuvent être portées à 12 ans en cas d’abonnement Ubuntu Pro.
This used to be the exclusive domain of sites dedicated to Linux and open source. It seems we are starting to attract a lot of attention nowadays — for better or for worse.
The problem: the Ubuntu app store will no longer install ".deb" files, only Snaps. If you are a Linux "power user", this isn't much of an issue, Ubuntu is still based on Debian package management after all, and you can still use the "apt-get" command in the CLI. And you can still install FlatPaks.
But as Abhi points out, this could cause problems for people looking for an alternative to Windows or iOS. They are now pretty strongly locked-in to the Snap format and the Ubuntu's official app store unless they bother to learn about and install alternatives.
I think I am going to start recommending Fedora or Mint as my best Linux distro for beginners from now on.
Hi all. I've got an older #computer running #Windows10, and I'm thinking about putting #Linux on it since I've always wanted to try it out and think this computer might run better with Linux. I read a topic on audiogames.net about Linux #accessibility, and I saw a few recommendations for #distros to try out. To any #blind Linux users, is #NixOS a good one for a beginner, or should I try #LinuxMint or #Ubuntu? Also, what's the best way to install Linux and replace #Windows? Thanks. #technology#tech@mastoblind@accessibility@main
