Currently getting my head round webfinger, webmention, indielogin, and the like: a mix of standards, experiments, and some decent results.
When does it make sense to use webfinger link relations vs link tags with rel(ationship) attributes in the <head> section of a web page? Are these equivalent features that just happen to have grown up in parallel or is there some rationale delineating the two?
Any clarifying articles greatly appreciated, as are boosts.
> Wouldn’t it be amazing to be able to collect reactions from other personal websites or large platforms when we publish something on our own sites? And wouldn’t it be exciting if we could actually enable decentralized conversations across our websites, by letting our sites talk to each other?
My blog imports replies from other social media sites and displays them as comments.
This sometimes leads to people replying on my site rather than to the original commenter.
So I've hacked my WordPress theme to say "Reply on example.com" to give people the choice to leave a public comment or a more private reply.
Integrating my website into the IndieWeb took longer than expected due to scattered resources and confusion. Should I do X or Y? Having too many options to choose from can lead to paralysis.
We don't want that, do we?
We want something simple, something that allows as many people as possible to get on board. An omakase 🍱.
Here's mine. You should start and finish everything within an hour at most!
Since I've gotten exactly one webmention for my blog, I obviously had to put some work in to display this webmention on my blog. 😄 Had to do some reading to figure out how to make Hugo download external resources, but otherwise it was pretty smooth sailing. Much thanks to https://webmention.io/. Still not implemented sending webmentions yet though.
@henrikjernevad Looks like I'd need to add IndieAuth support to my (WriteFreely) web site before I could use webmention.io. Probably not worth the effort.
Nothing dictates that receiving a Webmention means you’re bound to display its source content on your website.
You could…
• forward the Webmention to your email,
• build a private notifications dashboard (with or without a moderation queue),
• add a link to the source page to your website without including its content,
• do something wild like set up an auto responder to the original author thanking them for the like/boost/reply,
• etc. etc. etc.
Add #IndieAuth to your website and allow others to sign in. They’d be able to view a dashboard of the content they’d posted that made its way onto your website. Maybe add some lightweight self-service moderation controls?
only just now noticed the #webmention item in there. that looks like some exciting #indieweb news! i know #ghost uses webmentions for recommendations, but maybe they're expanding their support?
OpenStreetMap data is free, we only ask that you tell people about us in exchange¹.
Some site use OSM without attribution, and hotlink to OSMF tile servers. 😭 Our data is free, but our servers cost time & money. 🖥 It's now even easier for you to report naughty sites like that. 📝 They can (eventually) be blocked from freeloading. We hope this will increase visibility of OSM! 👍 🎉
#webMentions work like this; you link to someone else's url, it sends a ping to that url's /webmention endpoint, then that site checks to make sure that your site has a link to it.
What stops you from removing said link after the verification has been approved by the mentioned site?
What if I write a blog post titled "This is the best blog on the Internet" and automatically #webmention every single site that accept webmentions, one at a time, replacing the mentioned url each time?
The #IndieWeb service #Bridgy is ready to handle bridge AT protocol and ActivityPub protocol posts and replies once federation is enabled in production (already working in sandbox test server).
The format will be:
To follow a #Fediverse account from BlueSky / AT protocol: <username>.<server_domain>.ap.brid.gy
To follow a BlueSky / AT protocol user: <username>@atproto.brid.gy
Example: @atp.youronly.one@atproto.brid.gy
This allows users from each side to see new posts and to reply to these threads.
What is more interesting is that, if you have IndieWeb support on your website or blog, you will see comments from BlueSky / AT protocol appear as a comment, thanks to #Webmention. It is already possible to do this with Fediverse / ActivityPub. ^_~
