The world is burning. At this point, should not be an abstract concept anywhere, anymore. 🙁 Time to act to mitigate/reduce global warming/climate change = now... Really, it was several decades ago. 😡
#Ottawa June 2016 vs. June 2023. #Wildfires haze hangs over the city. #AirPollution risks are off the chart (reaching 29 on a 10+ scale). It is hard to breath outside without feeling dizzy. #Ontario is burning and the #ClimateCrisis is on full display. And yet the #Ford government is hell-bent on destroying Ontario’s critical #Greenbelt.
Air pollution in New York City today is at dangerous levels due to the fires in Canada. I went on my usual early evening walk, & the view was alarming. Very low visibility, & a pronounced smell of smoke.
The first picture is the view of the George Washington Bridge around 6pm the other day. The second picture is how it looked today.
I’ve been mildly struggling with breathing the past couple of days. I clued in yesterday it’s because of forest fires. My eyes are a little gummy and I have a nagging cough. Gonna make sure I have my puffer with me when I go to the gym and keep an eye on the air quality index. Oof. #asthma#AirPollution#AirQuality#ForestFires#ClimateDiary
"Based on the research findings, controlling air pollutant emissions may have a positive impact on reducing the level and area of light pollution in the night sky, and thus promote sustainable urban environment development."
Other countries like #Germany and #China that still burn a lot of coal should take note: changing or adapting the transport vehicles (wagons) might help to reduce #AirPollution significantly.
"It found that passing #trains carrying #coal add on average 8 micrograms per cubic meter of air (ug/m3) to ambient PM2.5 #pollution...Under certain wind conditions, these #concentrations reached 25 ug/m3..."
"Much of the reluctance to do what #ClimateChange requires comes from the assumption that it means trading abundance for #austerity, and trading all our stuff and conveniences for less stuff, less convenience. But what if it meant giving up things we’re well rid of, from deadly #emissions to nagging feelings of doom and complicity in destruction?
What if the austerity is how we live now — and the #abundance could be what is to come?"
"Currently 7 million people die prematurely EACH YEAR from #AirPollution, more than the death toll during the entire #pandemic.
Lung #cancer and #respiratory-related deaths linked to air pollution are up 160% over the past 30 years and it causes genetic mutations in some lung cancer-linked genes."
We will stop paying this price as soon as we give #FossilFuels the boot: let's do it!
"About 1 in 4 people in the #UnitedStates – more than 119 million residents – live with #AirPollution that can hurt their health and shorten their lives, according to a new report from the #AmericanLungAssociation. People of color are disproportionately affected, as are residents of Western cities. "
