as a novice sailor -- but a seasoned techie -- i hope that nautical.social can be used to help people share safety and security information with each other. not just existential threats like major weather events, but also just creating a safe space for boaters to tell others their location or destination as a security precaution
i have been thinking about coming up with specific hashtags for various kinds of information sharing related to these goals. ideas?
We decided to backtrack ½ km to the junction for the Rufford branch of Leeds & Liverpool canal, to head north for a bit. To do so, we first had to continue toward Liverpool for ¾ hr (2 swing bridges, 1 dredging crew) before we could turn the boat.
From the junction, we joined Ron and Catherine for the first four locks. Now our two boats are moored end to end, in time for dinner and the sunset.
Chris's port engine stalled while underway yesterday. We couldn't get it to restart. Today he, Justin, and I started troubleshooting. First we removed the primary fuel filter, thinking it may have gotten clogged. Removing the filter wasn't hard, but getting the water bowl off the bottom was. It was so tight we had to pierce the old filter with a screwdriver to get enough leverage to remove it. We replaced the filter and the engine still wouldn't start (1/3).

I’d like to put this out there to #narrowboat owners:
I’d love to swap a week or two cruising aboard your narrowboat for a week or two cruising aboard my Ranger Tug on the US #GreatLoop. I’ll be doing the historic #ErieCanal next summer and will be on the Atlantic Intercoastal Waterway #ICW from this October through next May. I don’t mind sleeping on a sofa if you don’t mind sleeping in a small lower private berth.
Let’s each get a taste of a different #boating experience!
To mark the transition into the second half of the solar year, we tend to things transient, unfinished, and overlooked. Some experiments and impressions of being with the world-at-large, foreshadowing the 'wabi sabi' reader from the @_foam Anarchive.
An invitation to wander, to watch and wait, noticing and letting things unfold. 🍂
A spotlight on alternative temporal orders, where the hold of gridded time loosens or breaks; spaces and situations beyond the reach of the clock.
