A common fallacy is that it isn't ableism that's responsible for the inaccessibility of campuses, but that many of the buildings were built before ADA (1990).
A) Disabled people existed (and were paying taxes) prior to 1990.
B) Even when new infrastructure is created, it's clear no disabled ppl were leading nor listened to.
New path at UC Davis, not wide enough for more than one wheelchair. Only one at a time for you crips, even during evacuations.
FYI, President Biden overcame a major stutter to become who he is today. Many do not know this. His strategy and tactics utilized to produce normal speech include being very thoughtful and careful about the words he uses. This can be interpreted by some as being 'slow' or stupid or having failing memory. Folks . . . it's the exact opposite. What he has done, what he has overcome is amazing. He should be an inspiration to us all. #JoeBiden#POTUS#Disability#Stuttererhttps://www.gq-magazine.co.uk/politics/article/joe-biden-stutter
Hi #MedMastodon! I migrated my account from another instance. I didn't realize all my posts would poof. 😿
I guess that means it's time for another #Introduction post! My name is Britt (she/they) & I am an MD/PhD student at the University of Arizona College of Medicine. I am finishing my PhD in neuroscience, investigating novel chaperone protein (Hsp90) inhibitors in the treatment of Alzheimer's Disease and trying to prevent dementia. Follow for posts about #Medicine#Disability#LGBTQIA & cats!
I'm disabled living 55% below the Canadian poverty line. I am on-binary lesbian that has a service dog. I'm on disability benefits and they aren'providing enough to cover basic needs.
I love helping others, I have a laptop now (THANK YOUUU SO MUCH MASTODON!!) so I’m looking for courses to be a social worker. I want to meet and cultivate a community on #BlackFedi & #blackmastodon. Please reblog if you see this 💛
Gah! I hate it when abled YouTubers only show "inspirational" disabled people...the exceptional folks with good savings, good support network, etc. who "don't let it stop them". There's rarely if ever any analysis of systemic ableism and the comments get full of "See? the only thing stopping you is a negative attitude." No, positive attitude alone doesn't make the difference with systemic ableism. In fact, you become a tool shoring it up. #disability#ableism
I've made some changes to my gofundme to add all of the debts I'm trying to pay. Which had the added benefit of near doubling what I thought I owed. My goal just to clear my debts to begin saving for housing is now $7,200. To show exactly how that breaks down I've included screenshots for the curious. Thank you again to everyone continuing to share and support my crowdfund #disability#blm#BlackMastodon#housing#disabilityaid#mutualaid#vancouver#actuallyautistic
Does anyone know about any Speech to Text tool used in an examination setting at Universities for aiding visually impaired? Because of the lack of availability scribes?
Both proprietary/non-proprietary tools are fine, And of-course latter would be great.
I'm trying to help a friend to conduct examinations for people with disabilities at their university.
Spider silk, covered in dew like a royal necklace. I managed to get several wonderful photos of these webs. No sign of their builders at all that entire morning though. It was foggy and cool, there was dew on everything. A truly fantastic morning for a macro photographer
Fello hearing folks: If you're using something to auto-generate captions or a transcript, YOU NEED TO COPY EDIT IT.
Kudos to you for working on accessibility, but do not assume that automation is infallible. It's quite error-prone.
It can be even more frustrating to experience the relief of thinking you've found captions only to find they're mostly useless to you because they're full of garbage. It's like getting catfished. Please edit!
Grayscale is really fun for flowers because you get to see delicate structures that might otherwise get obliterated by their bright colors. Peony petal with dew, cellphone #macrophotography
I am looking to hire a social worker or equivalent in Ontario for 5-10hrs/mo. Eastern ON area, but can likely do remote.
Need someone hip with the complex bureaucracy of supports. But more importantly someone innovative, wanting to explore and foster change and create new things - because existing supports are shite.
You what we need, basic income for everybody. And then social workers can actually help connect people to resources instead of gatekeep services. Which is what we need, and social workers would much rather do.
I am wondering if moving to infosec.exchange may be called for.
I'm switching from a civil service #cybersecurity#policy position to an #ISO function implementing #NIS2 and related directives at a critical infrastructure company in a couple months. Got some new skills to learn, but would still get wound up about #Politics, #disability and #GLBT rights.
Good morning! I've been told I have 4-6 months to figure out to live on my own, despite being autistic and disability payments not being anywhere near enough to live on. I can't work so I'm trying to get a few months ahead on rent. Please check out my gofundme, and consider donating or setting a reminder for your payday to send me even a single dollar. I'm scared but out of options. Thank you. #disability#blm#BlackMastodon#housing#disabilityaid#mutualaid
Hey guess who just had to remove their mask and risk #covid exposure and significant worsening of existing #disability so that they could #vote under the #Tory government's new voter suppression #photoID rules.
Thrilled to hear that the Zip team has reached their funding goal for this incredible work. 👏 Zip is a black and white British comic about imperfect superhumans, and (secretly) about disability.
If this sounds interesting, please fill out this pre-selection questionnaire or share it with others: https://forms.office.com/e/DGLK97G1aN (available in German and English)
Sadly I cannot offer compensation (I’m just a student), but I hope that some of you might still be willing to participate 🤗
