"This has amazing implications in the clinic to expedite genetic testing and also to reduce the cost of genetic testing for a multitude of different diseases," explained Dr. Nicola Wright, a pediatric hematologist and immunologist at the Alberta Children's Hospital.
Today I'm writing about how sex selection emerged as one of the leading promises of 20th-c. biologists/eugenicists as they got to grips with sexological genetics. 😬

At 11am (GMT) next Wednesday (31 Jan) I will be discussing my article 'Mendel's Closet' as part of the Royal Society history of science seminar series. 🏳️🌈 🧬
There are 2 people in my immediate family with schizophrenia. As with many things, scientists have been trying to find a genetic link. Now, I'm not saying I agree with this guy, but it's an interesting take.
He says schizophrenia is maybe purely environment/nuture. That it runs in families because traumatic abuse runs in families. My family was MESSED UP. And there's a high incidence of mental health issues overall. Makes me ponder.

This #PLOSBiology Essay, @ziyue_gao looks at how new methods and techniques are helping to uncover connections between genotype, phenotype, and fitness at a population level.
Study reveals the genetic legacy of racial and #gender hierarchy in the United States" by Phys.org (2024)
This article summarizes the key findings of the study mentioned above. It emphasizes the complex interplay between social forces and #genetics.
This study uses genetic #data from over 100,000 Americans to investigate how historical and ongoing social hierarchies, particularly those based on #race and gender, have shaped the genetic makeup of the US population.
I’m honored that Science reviewed my new book of science history and memoir, “Transient and Strange”… finding it “wry, charming, informative, and, indeed, sometimes strange”
📢 At 11am (GMT) on Wednesday 31 January I will be discussing (online) my latest article, 'Mendel's Closet,' as part of the Royal Society history of science seminar series. 🧬🏳️🌈🐦
The Visualizing Biological Data 2024 workshop (VIZBI), March 13-15 in Los Angeles, looks very interesting. Speakers will discuss visualization in areas like #genetics, #cellBiology and #ecology. Participants can present a poster and lightning talk. Mine will cover neuVid, which simplifies video production with #Blender3D. Here it is showing some #Drosophila neurons from the FlyWire data set, using #AI to parse my natural language description of the video.
