We had the entire patio to ourselves 🙂
At Brown's Social in downtown with my friend, Natalie. She's a horticulturalist, living in Deep Cove. We had some eats & drinks before going across street for PechaKucha Night VOL. 20.

They played tunes, the whole time we were there. We lucked out on getting street parking, one block away. Then lucked out on empty patio, on arrival. We had our own fire table 🥰

States Dust Off Obscure Anti-Mask Laws to Target Pro-Palestine

Arcane laws banning people from wearing in public are now being used to target people who wear face coverings while peacefully Israel’s war in . That’s a big problem.

Welp, now that wildfire and smoke season have started in earnest, I'll get back to updating my wildfire smoke resources list: https://cryptpad.fr/pad/#/2/pad/view/4Mi5umUBZUCSIt7qA6kMSiZK5ZoTntWUlSXkJ9y1ZhU/

If you know of resources in your area of the US related to wildfire smoke mitigation like:
-places or organizations giving out free KN95s or air filters
-places where people can go to get out of the smoke

then please let me know and I will add that information to the doc! I'm also looking for resources on actions people can take to mitigate climate change, preferably actions they can take immediately (petitions people can sign, actions they can go to in the near future, that kind of thing), but that is a secondary goal.

Why were most of the cyclists in this photo wearing masks in November 1977? Was it to avoid breathing polluted air?

If so, thank goodness we have the EPA now; I hope we can address modern threats to air quality, like climate change related wildfires, rather than giving up and letting the air become difficult to breathe again.

COVID-19 and flu update Ballarat: Masks Still Matter in 2024 | thecourier.com.au

"MASKS still matter is the advice from the region's public health leader as the community faces rising cases of COVID-19 and influenza."

"If everybody who is symptomatic tests themselves, many will show they have COVID-19." - Dr Rob Grenfell, Grampians Public Health Unit chief strategy and regions officer

@auscovid19

Source: https://www.thecourier.com.au/story/8607418/covid-19-and-flu-update-ballarat-masks-still-matter-in-2024/

COVID-19 cases continue to impact bed availability and staffing at Grampians Health Ballarat Base Hospital with 14 COVID-positive patients in hospital as of Monday morning. This did not include patients with influenza. Dr Grenfell said both viruses were a serious concern, particularly for those at a higher risk of severe outcomes - and many people had loved ones under threat. "The issue for people out there are those with impaired immunity," Dr Grenfell said. "We're continuing to bring outbreaks in aged care centres under control...we're testing inpatients and those across our cancer wards. "If everybody who is symptomatic tests themselves, many will show they have COVID-19." The nation's drug regulator, the Therapeutic Goods Administrator, has also been urging people to check their rapid antigen tests (commonly known as a RAT) and to not use a kit after its expiry or use-by date. City of Ballarat's free RAT program finished at the end of 2023. Dr Grenfell said all the health and hygiene lessons from COVID-19 still mattered to prevent viral outbreaks: social distancing; hand hygiene; good ventilation; wearing masks when in closed spaces and unable to social distance; and, keeping vaccinations up to date. He said masks do work as a line of protection and people should consider masking up once more. If sick - even with a sniffle - Dr Grenfell urged people to stay at home.

People get sick from a lot of things, but COVID accounts for much of that sickness, and we continue to learn of the long-term consequences of repeat COVIF infections.

I'll be working with kids at a museum over the school holidays, and I want to wear a proper mask, but I also need to be unintimidating and approachable.

Anyone know where in Australia I can get reputable n95s (or equivalent) that are patterned or fun colours that fit an adult with a large head? Bonus if they have dinosaurs on them but I'm not in a position to be fussy.

On , I frequently read (and empathize with) people around here posting abt comments by various ppl questioning their masks. It sucks!

Wanted to give an other perspective: I've worn N95s (pillowy Dräger 1750) at the office for 2 years (incl. dozens of business meetings) and nobody's ever said anything about it. (A couple of "are you sick today or just cautious" in 2 years.)

Your mileage may vary, but in case you've been thinking about trying, hope hearing that might help?

"Critics fear that if the final guidelines don’t clearly state a need for N95 masks, hospitals won’t adequately stockpile them, paving the way for shortages in a future health emergency. And if the document isn’t revised to emphasize ventilation and air filtration, health facilities won’t invest in upgrades."

Today Swedish #masks brand #Airinum is launching #Hale, a portable #airpurifier. https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/airinum/hale?ref=discovery. It claims to remove 99% of airbone particles incl. virus. There are no certifications like #K95 or #FFP2 for purifiers, other than #HEPA, which doesn't give the same level of assurance. This piece of research from Aug22 is promising though https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/35947419/, but Airinum stopped short of guaranteeing safety from #COVID for @longcovid sufferers. Thoughts? It would be a gamechanger for me
