Some of you read my tweets and think I am some kind of anti-progress troglodyte. I like the new and shiny but have been in this industry long enough to know bullshit and rent-seeking when I see it.
I am baffled by how much trouble I’m having at writing #rust at a decent clip. #Golang I felt pretty good at after a few months, same with #Python and #PHP. Meanwhile I’ve been trying to write anything useful in Rust for months and it’s so incredibly slow going.
I’m shocked people are enthusiastic about adopting this for their jobs. If I had a specific part of an app that needed more speed, absolutely. But as a general purpose language? I’m not seeing it yet.
I’ll keep ramming my head against it but have not enjoyed myself thus far. If writing a proof of concept in python takes me 4 hours, rewriting that in rust clocks in easily at 12-16 hours.
@matdevdug there are tradeoffs. I write #C++ all the time and i'm interested in #rust because I expect to write code faster, without the compromises that make languages like #Python or even go not suitable for my problem (I.work in real time embedded systems). If #php could possibly work, then your problem isn't one rust really aims to be good for.
Just sat down to write my Security Tip for this week and realised this one is Security Tip #50! 😲 🎂
To celebrate, I'll sneak a special 50% off discount code into the email somewhere, valid for 24 hours only.

Surprisingly big hassle to install pdo_pgsql for #Postgres support for #PHP with asdf. Did something happen w/ pdo_pgsql that made it less desirable to have installed by default?
I've got a weird thing going on when trying to test an Http request made with #Laravel.
I'm using the HTTP client with a custom middleware to modify the request using
->withMiddleware(
Middleware::mapRequest()
)
When doing the Http::assertSent() the request that is passed to the callback does not seem like it's passed through the middleware, although when I inspect the response, the request seem correct. Did I find a bug? Help! #PHP

I didn't realize just how much I've come to lean on type-directed refactoring in languages like #typescript and #fsharp until I had to make a change to a massive chunk of PHP at work. Running through every possible execution path just to make sure I didn't miss any function arguments is a massive waste of time
#OffTopic For a dynamic website with a database, is #php + #MariaDB still the best/most recommended combination, or are there lighter options, such as #javascript + DB (json?)?
