Back in the 1960s, two Tasmanians – Bill Mollison and David Holmgren – coined the term “permaculture” to describe a new way of thinking about farming, and how we can grow our food in a more ecologically sustainable way.
Skimming along the edge of the Bae Caerfyrddin (Carmarthen Bay). I love the view, if I have to commute I’m happy it’s on this route. The tide is high (but I’m holding on) #Wales#TrainTravel#PublicTransport
> Millions of Australians face the daily frustration of delayed commutes, particularly on busy motorways. But as governments spend billions continually upgrading roads, experts say that might not be the best solution.
There's not a single direct mention of improving #PublicTransport in these areas. Sure they talk about cars and roads, but never public accessibility.
It's good to hear they're adding new public housing (with less plans to sell them off). But all of these locations are not public transport friendly. I've been out to many areas of Adelaide on foot. You'll be travelling easily more then 4x as long as you would with a car. (if you're heading to the city which again is another one of Adelaide's problems.)
Stunning failure of public planing once again in Adelaide. #FuckCars
Last night my partner was waiting on a fairly empty train platform late at night. He got chatting with security staff who really appreciated a friendly chat. They said that it is rare that anyone talks to them unless people have a complaint (that is fine) or are abusing them.
Next time you have a chance, say hi and smile at the station security staff who help make us feel safer travelling on #PublicTransport
Some good news for anyone who loves RMTransit's public transport explainer videos, but doesn't like Google and YouTube.
Looks like @RM_Transit now has an account on PeerTube here, which you can follow from Mastodon: @reece
(If you're the first to follow the account from your instance it will initially appear empty. Videos will start appearing in your feed after you follow.)
By announcing that the money that has been saved by binning large elements of #HS2 & replacing it with the hodgepodge of fragmented projects in the (so-called) Network North is now going to be spent on filling potholes in #London.
When overcrowded buses replace train services, they should be free of charge. It's nowhere near the same quality of service, and charging for it is kind of rude. If it's free, it encourages train operators to do everything they can to avoid replacement bus situations.
This story from #Lancashire (via the BBC) emphasises why potholes are a problem & need dealing with... but this needs to be done with money not robbed from #publictransport investment.... cycling & trains should complement each other not compete from cash!
On an average day, 62,000 people arrive by bicycle at Utrecht Central Station to take the train there!
(That's 43% of the total number of train passengers departing there) #train#railway#publictransport#bicycle#mobility#urbanism
Another sign of Britain's failure to invest... the Automobile Association reports that breakdowns linked to potholes (badly wanted #roads) are up by a third in the last two years....
You'll recall Galbraith's characterisation of the US as enjoying private wealth but public squalor... an observation not unconnected to the state of the US' roads...
Whatever, your view on roads (preferring investment in #publictransport, perhaps) wrecking people's cars is not really a sensible way forward!
In complaints about UK's #railways, our rail service is often compared to that available to our neighbours in #Europe.... unfortunately it seems that in #Germany at least, the railways are beset by a series of similar problems to our own (not least due to a vibrant & politically well connected German automotive sector);
the problem of devaluing #publictransport would seem not to be a problem limited to these shores.
(tbf, I never thought it was)
Me: "I'll get the bus to the train station"
Helpful person 1: "Oh, but we can give you a lift".
Me: "There's a direct bus, no need for an extra car on the road"
Helpful person 1: "But it's an electric car"
Me: "..."
"Thank you, but no thank you".
Helpful person 2, 10 min later: "We'll give you a lift..."
We are thrilled to announce that there will be a second edition of the "Railways and Open Transport" devroom at #FOSDEM 2024, organised by part of the #OpenRail community 🎉
Taking kid and 4 friends for birthday treat today. Half the other parents have cars but I'm taking them on the bus (hard to fit 5 kids in a normal car legally even if I wanted to). It will take maybe 15 mins longer than driving. We're lucky to live in a city with good public transport but even so it wasn't my first choice, in spite of never owning a car, maybe because I grew up with cars as first option? Normalising this stuff is hard even in #Copenhagen.
