The year was 1985. The software division of Bantam Books publishes the first of 2 #ChooseYourOwnAdventure computer adaptations, kicking it off with #EdwardPackard's "The Cave of Time" for the #AppleII and #Commodore64. Time to find an emulator!
I am a big proponent of a programming paradigm where writing code and building up relationships and connections leads to the emergence of new, unforeseen connections and avenues. Instead of leading you down the wrong paths and requiring rewrites, coding should sculpt and shape connections, offering surprising new connections for free. #software#code#programming#webdev#javascript
in software we give our deployment environments names — Production, Staging, and Local. It’s Baseball season, so let’s have some fun and rename our environments.
From a batting perspective
Prod => At Bat
Stage => On Deck
Local => In the hole
From a Pitching perspective, one could use
Prod => Pitching
Stage => Warming up
Local => Bullpen
I'm interested in this idea of tech jobs outside of tech. I was thinking about this last night and just found this article: "How to land a job in climate tech", but you could swap "climate tech" for anything, the music industry, how about the art world? I was imagining a directory with a whole list of companies that do tech and tagging the companies based on their tech stack and industry. It should be easier to find cool companies. https://stackoverflow.blog/2023/05/04/how-to-land-a-job-in-climate-tech/?cb=1#tech#job#software#code
What are some IT and Infosec superstitions you see out there?
Im talking about those things you see people do or refrain from doing not hecause they have a good reason to but because they believe something bad will happen if they do or dont do the thing.
Maybe theres a ritual someone does before commiting code. Or perhaps someone says 'dont patch on a friday'
What supersitions do you see out there? Do YOU have any youd like to admit to?
It's always a little funny to me how much resistance some people have to me saying I'm personally embarrassed by things about my products and my organizations.
People kindly want me to know that it's not that bad, or that I don't need to be embarrassed, and similiar reassurances. I know it's not that bad 😉 - it's not that bad because people like me are embarrassed enough to make sure things get fixed, salved, and improved.
The funny thing is it seems like many people do not believe me. The idea of being personally and organizationally embarrassed - and being okay with that, embracing it fully - is too alien for a lot of people.
Yes, I really do actually want to know exactly where it's hurting you. I deliberately intentionally seek it out. I'm hugely grateful to the people who trust me enough to give me the raw truth about their experiences with my products and organizations.
And yes, I really do intend to find a way to make it better for you. One way or another. Kicking and screaming if needed. I mean it when I quote Jean Monnet, "I'm not pessimistic. I'm not optimistic. I'm DETERMINED."
So yes, I really am embarrassed, and that's okay. You don't have to feel bad for me. It's a good thing! 🙏🏻
This is the year 2023 and I finally get to celebrate having been in the software industry for long enough to see the pendulum swing back towards the #monolith.
As excited as this makes me, I do wonder when we’re going to stop moving from one to another. Both can be great and terrible but in many situations you’re likely going to be working with the worst of both. Because the work we provide is often going to be efficient translations so that different consumers can understand it. #software
@jab I think we identify dichotomies like monolith vs. micro so that we can make informed decisions that rarely go to extremes. Another example I see is OOP/FP patterns. It's nice to work in a framework where both are valued and possible for different purposes. #software
Anyone know where I can get a copy of #ProTerm 3.1 5.25” floppies that work with an Apple IIc, ideally in dsk format? The copy I got from mirrors.apple2.org.za boots with an error on my IIc.
if I asked you today to write an algorithm X that you need to compile as native library that can run in the browser, desktop Windows app and Android/iOS app, which language would you choose for that and why?
C is not allowed because it's year 2023 already and we can do better 😅 #programming#software
I'm Asahi 95, the 95 in my name refers to #Windows 95 :windows:, cause I love the retro aesthetics of old Windows :ms_heart_eyes:
I'm a person who is a tech enthusiast :ms_computer: and loves #Linux and #FOSS, although I still use some #proprietary#software from time to time :linux: :opensource:
I'm currently learning how to do #webdev stuff such as #HTML, #CSS, and maybe even #Javascript so i could maybe become a web dev in the future!
I joined the #Fediverse :fediverse: mainly because I wanted to get away from centralised services 🔒 and also want to interact with an open and diverse community that respects one another :blobcathug:
I'm a person who is #bisexual and is an avid supporter of the #lgbtqa+ :philly_pride:
I hope I can interact with everybody on the Fediverse and beyond! :blobcat:
I'm very glad to announce the release of version 2.27 of #snac, the simple, minimalistic #ActivityPub instance server written in ANSI C. It includes some interesting new features (that I announced some days ago):
Started Mastodon API support, so you can use Mastodon-compatible apps to access #snac accounts. What works so far: login, private and public timelines, full post information (replies and ancestors), liking and boosting posts. Things that don't work yet but eventually will: following accounts, posting and replying to messages (I still have to figure out how some things work, like posting images), notifications (needs some internal support), the instance timeline (snac does not have one, but it can be simulated with not much effort) and probably many other things. Things that will never work: bookmarks, pinning, a federated timeline, many other things that I don't remember right now. Please note that if you want to use this API in your instance, you must add some lines to your HTTP proxy configuration, see the snac(8) (administrator documentation) manual page. I'm doing my tests using the #Tusky (which sometimes crashes, surely my fault), #AndStatus, #Fedilab and #Husky Android apps. Success or failure reports will be appreciated.
Fixed some buffer overflows (contributed by Saagar Jha).
