Everywhere you look, policy is becoming software. But what does it mean when code is becoming public infrastructure? Our @ainali spoke at The NLUUG conference today. Watch it here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2K1UozUKGO0
A talk at #LAS2023 about software sustainability -- and the environmental impact of power-hungry code -- was a shocking wake-up call that's too important to ignore. So, please give a warm welcome to the creator of that talk, @kde's Joseph P. De Veaugh-Geiss
I came across an open source weather radar project that's available on both Windows and Linux! It's still being actively developed but I wanted to share should anyone want or be able to contribute. I think this is an excellent idea for those that cannot afford programs like GRLevel Analyst or the monthly fee of WSV3.
What happens if your development team is hit by a bus? How to increase a low Bus Factor score
"The Bus Factor score is an estimation of people who are so vital to your project that without them it will stall. If those people disappeared from the project for any reason (like an "accident" or even taking holiday, got fired, or left the project), no one would be able to maintain the project."
The year was 1985. The software division of Bantam Books publishes the first of 2 #ChooseYourOwnAdventure computer adaptations, kicking it off with #EdwardPackard's "The Cave of Time" for the #AppleII and #Commodore64. Time to find an emulator!
I am a big proponent of a programming paradigm where writing code and building up relationships and connections leads to the emergence of new, unforeseen connections and avenues. Instead of leading you down the wrong paths and requiring rewrites, coding should sculpt and shape connections, offering surprising new connections for free. #software#code#programming#webdev#javascript
in software we give our deployment environments names — Production, Staging, and Local. It’s Baseball season, so let’s have some fun and rename our environments.
From a batting perspective
Prod => At Bat
Stage => On Deck
Local => In the hole
From a Pitching perspective, one could use
Prod => Pitching
Stage => Warming up
Local => Bullpen
I'm interested in this idea of tech jobs outside of tech. I was thinking about this last night and just found this article: "How to land a job in climate tech", but you could swap "climate tech" for anything, the music industry, how about the art world? I was imagining a directory with a whole list of companies that do tech and tagging the companies based on their tech stack and industry. It should be easier to find cool companies. https://stackoverflow.blog/2023/05/04/how-to-land-a-job-in-climate-tech/?cb=1#tech#job#software#code
What are some IT and Infosec superstitions you see out there?
Im talking about those things you see people do or refrain from doing not hecause they have a good reason to but because they believe something bad will happen if they do or dont do the thing.
Maybe theres a ritual someone does before commiting code. Or perhaps someone says 'dont patch on a friday'
What supersitions do you see out there? Do YOU have any youd like to admit to?
This is the year 2023 and I finally get to celebrate having been in the software industry for long enough to see the pendulum swing back towards the #monolith.
As excited as this makes me, I do wonder when we’re going to stop moving from one to another. Both can be great and terrible but in many situations you’re likely going to be working with the worst of both. Because the work we provide is often going to be efficient translations so that different consumers can understand it. #software
@jab I think we identify dichotomies like monolith vs. micro so that we can make informed decisions that rarely go to extremes. Another example I see is OOP/FP patterns. It's nice to work in a framework where both are valued and possible for different purposes. #software
@tbroyer Such #software tech already exists, it's only about who wishes to continue and spend money to start such things which will make the world #better than being capitalistic profit minded. I just love to #innovate things. Wish I have the #knowledge and power to #implement it. Slowly learning the #process of it. Just surfing #mastodon let me these many exposure in just few weeks. I'm glad I adopted mastodon. If any of you willing to discuss about it, I'm open to such convos☺️
