My baby sister is in town to visit. She likes #Japanese stuff (#anime, #Subarus, sushi, etc) and #thrift shopping. What do I need to show her while she's in #Portland?
Our itinerary includes the Japanese Garden, H-Mart, Kinokuniya, Hollywood Thrift, all the #vintage shops on Hawthorne.
What are some deep cuts, super weird kitchy #pdx spots I might not have heard of?
Fallacies of Distributed Computing: Automotive Edition
So our 2016 Subaru Outback has been having horrible battery drain issues for a couple years now. We got the attached service bulletin recently that explained the issue.
It turns out that the Data Communications Module that powers Subaru's Starlink service (emergency assistance/safety/etc. service) now causes a battery drain because it is trying to talk to a 3G network that is no longer there, and it just tries its little heart out.
You can bring the car in to get the DCM reprogrammed to not do this anymore which will fix the problem, and they will also cover batteries killed by the issue.
But my favorite part about this is that this happened because they didn't account for the first Fallacy of Distributed Computing:
"The network is reliable".
A bunch of vehicle computers each connecting to a home network sure sounds like distributed computing to me. 🤷🏻♀️
Well the dealership wouldn’t touch the DCM thing soooo instead I used a tap to bridge the DCM fuse to another fuse that was empty but wired as an accessory fuse (confirmed with a multimeter) and now the DCM only gets power when the ignition is on (either in accessory mode or actually started). Works for me, the only reason we need it powered at all is that it powers the hands free mic and the front speakers. 🤷🏻♀️ #Subaru#DistributedComputing#Lesbaru#cars
It has been #snow ing all day long here in #vermont. I'd estimate we've got at least 15" already, and we're still expecting snow for the next couple of hours.
The truck wheels are 33" tall to give a sense of scale, and the #Subaru#Crosstrek behind is almost completely buried!
Hopefully our #plow guy will be along soon, and I'll tidy the rest up with the #tractor tomorrow.
Wedged in a full size +1" spare in my #subaru wrx that only came with a pump and foam. Took the tools and jack and tossed them in a bag, the foam went directly in the trash. Too bad that the load floor isn't flat now, but better than what happened last time
We’re back with direct imaging with Masayuki Kuzuhara.
They used the #Subaru#telescope to observe nearby accelerating stars and search for substellar companions.
They discovered 4 substellar companions, one of which is the brown dwarf HIP 21152 B. The spectrum reveals water and methane. They further modelled the orbit, giving them a dynamical mass of around 28 Mjup.#ExSSV
I was hoping to make my third Legacy an electric one, but #subaru has been dragging its heels in the #EV space (and, no, I wasn't not interested in their rebadged Toyota EV because, comparably, its blown out of the water by the competition).
Now it sounds like even their 2025 models will be ICE or hybrid at best. We've owned 4 subarus, but they lost me to #hyundai during the EV transition. Cmon guys bust out with the amazing #outback and #legacy EVs
Die "Tokyo Motor Show" ist Geschichte, es lebe die "Japan Mobility Show". Mit leicht geänderten Konzept meldet sich die Automesse aus der Pandemie zurück.
Cedar for a potting bench and cheap 2x4s for a flimsy work bench to put a couple of tools on. Took this photo because I was surprised how much wood I can fit in a #Subaru#Crosstrek without taking out the car seat.
Not pictured, my kid who came to help me pick out wood.
Dear #subaru, please fit better horns to your lower model cars. When I need to get angry at a really stupid, dangerous driver, it’s embarrassing when my #car emits a squeaky “parp”.
@MichaelRoss Spiffy for a quick setup. A lot of older cars take 3.5 MM in too, so you can use the vehicle speakers.
I did a double din head aftermarket unit 5 years ago on my older Subaru. Better route IMO if you have the skills. Still very happy with that upgrade to AA capability, Bluetooth audio, back up camera, and steering wheel controls. I also supported AAWireless before realease, rolling with that too. #autos#subaru
Your car is probably #spying on you. If your vehicle was made in the last few years, you’re probably driving around in a data-harvesting machine that may collect personal information as sensitive as your race, weight, and sexual activity. #Volkswagen’s cars reportedly know if you’re fastening your seatbelt and how hard you hit the brakes.
If You’ve Got a New Car, It’s a Data Privacy Nightmare
"Bad news: your car is a spy. If your vehicle was made in the last few years, you’re probably driving around in a data-harvesting machine that may collect personal information as sensitive as your race, weight, and sexual activity. Volkswagen’s cars reportedly know if you’re fastening your seatbelt and how hard you hit the brakes.
That’s according to new findings from Mozilla’s *Privacy Not Included project. The #nonprofit found that every major car brand fails to adhere to the most basic privacy and security standards in new internet-connected models, and all 25 of the brands Mozilla examined flunked the organization’s test. #Mozilla found brands including #BMW, #Ford, #Toyota, #Tesla, and #Subaru collect #data about drivers including race, facial expressions, weight, health information, and where you drive. Some of the cars tested collected data you wouldn’t expect your car to know about, including details about sexual activity, race, and immigration status, according to Mozilla." https://gizmodo.com/mozilla-new-cars-data-privacy-report-1850805416
