Big reveal:
A room temperature #superconductor will be unveiled tomorrow at #APS!
Superconductors have many applications, one of them being to enable long-distance power lines, dramatically reducing #energy bills through improved transmission efficiency.
The #Korean Society of #Superconductivity and #Cryogenics declared #LK-99 room-temperature #superconductor 'groundless' after 8 labs failed to replicate results. No evidence of zero resistance or the #Meissner effect has been found, challenging researchers' claims.
An organic material in a metastable phase behaves a little like a room-temperature #superconductor when excited with laser light. Though this behaviour fades almost as quickly as the laser pulse that induces it, the team behind the discovery say that with the right light source, it might be possible to keep the material in its superconducting-like state continuously.
The heartbeat of a machine can be seen in many locations - in this case, in the monitoring of temperatures inside the #cern#lhc magnet power connectors using #grafana and #timescale
These connectors interface between the outside world and the cosmically cold cryogenics of the superconductor inside. If not monitored and heated, they can freeze and form ice and dew!
As the machine ramps power up and down, so do their temperatures, forming an imprint of the daily operations in the graphs.
And after adding in the complete set of all #Cern#lhc Power Lead temperature sensors, the graph now looks far more stellar!
With 220 sensors providing data we are helping keep the accelerator's #superconductor magnets safely powered - and the data it generates looks absolutely fantastic as well
This graph here no longer shows a plot per individual sensor, but rather a heatmap of all sensors - beautifully visualising the operational heartbeat with #timescale and #grafana for plots <3
After a few intense weeks of speculation and drama, more and more labs have been able to recreate LK-99, also known as modified lead-apatite. The material was touted as the first-ever room-temperature ambient pressure superconductor, a claim that was met with healthy skepticism and excitement. After all, extraordinary claims...

#SGGQA 310 - Qualcomm Takes a RISC, Fusion Power Breakthrough, YouTube Enhanced Playback, Trying to Figure Out LK-99
If the LK-99 “superconductor” is the real deal, it could be revolutionary in a number of ways. But it’s not without its share of skeptics. The Verge spoke with a handful of experts in the field to try to sort the science from the hype. https://flip.it/Z4Yw6D #Tech#Superconductor#LK99#Science
If LK-99 is the real deal, it could be a game-changer for everything from quantum computing and medical imaging to energy and transportation. But there are a lot of red flags.
There seem to be a few groups now having small levitating flakes of LK-99 - only one group with a resistance graph so far though (and I don't think they had any levitation?)
Still, progress? #superconductor
“We are in an odd position holding a patent to a technology that could prove revolutionary in many fields. The last thing we want to do is gatekeep access to further scientific developments. We are working with our attorneys to…#OpenSource our tech for universities and nonprofits while retaining rights associated with monetizing derivative technologies.”
I've been following write-ups on the whole #superconductor thing and I see the abbreviation Pb and i know it's lead, but my mind automatically says "plumbum" and i giggle
