I'm sitting here listening to my partner play in the other room.
It's a themed campaign.
The party is 5 bards all named some version of Jim, attending an annual Bard Jim conference
Gym is a dragonborn bard-barian.
Jyme is an eternally drunk halfling.
Jimothan is an awakened rock
Jalozar Jimtheryn is the one of the two inaugural Jims
Jimenai is a goop being that fell from space onto a bard named Jim, and accidentally absorbed them.

Their quest is to find the Stolen Salt Shaker

Hi folks
With all the new folks signing to, remember that your server admins are volunteers and hosting isn't cheap.
If you're on mstdn.social like me, @stux is your admin and has links to help support the server. If $1 a month sounds fair, there's even a convenient Patreon so you don't have to think about it anymore

Feminists taught me that Mad Max Fury Road is not a feminist movie. I get that.

Fury Road was just an action movie where the violent protagonist was a woman with a visible disability, instead of an able bodied man. I get that.

But I still enjoy the fact that George Miller looked at all the dudes that got angry that a woman was the star of a Mad Max movie, and said "Cry about it!" and doubled down.

I am so watching this.

Artemis201,

@mekkaokereke I thought Fury Road was pretty feminist. It was all about how a society treated women like things so they tried to run away to escape. But then realized that running away wasn't an escape and instead returned to claim their place as valued members and leaders in society instead.

For a bit of Sunday happiness & silliness: tell me about some a book you've recently excitedly told someone about and why!

I've talked about Erin Meyer's "Culture Map" because it opened my eye to a lot of intercultural interactions I have in both, my everyday and my work life.

And about Marcin Wicha's "Things I Didn't Throw Out" because it made me laugh and cry at the same time + made me fall in love with Daunt books because I would not have found out about the book without them.

Artemis201,
@Artemis201@mstdn.social avatar

@vicgrinberg I recently read The Giver of Stars, which is a historical fiction about the Packhorse Librarians of Kentucky (US) during the great depression.

There were a lot of places in Kentucky that didn't have library access because of distances and rural mountain terrain. So the Packhorse Librarians would load 100 ish books into saddlebags every day and ride all around the county delivering books to secluded families.

Very well written. Good description of Kentucky

You know what, it's always confused me why native groups sometimes try to keep their language or cultural practices private (me growing up in the age of all info on the Internet at my fingertips.) I could respect it, but I didn't really understand it.
An article by @Toastie is the first time it was explained to me in a way that makes me go "oh duh". Thanks.

"The tribal nations keep ceremonial information private to protect it from appropriation or commodification by non-Natives."

Artemis201,
@Artemis201@mstdn.social avatar

Here's the excellent article. It's about how the government lets corporations be terrible at self-policing themselves when it comes to preserving cultural heritage (and anything else in the way of their new construction site)

I highly recommend a read

Anyone here a fan of the #DresdenFiles?
I've been thinking about what the Big Apocalypse Trilogy is going to be, and here are my thoughts:

We know the final 3 books are going to be named after the swears used in the books. Hell's Bells, Stars and Stones, and Empty Night, but we don't know what they'll be about.

I think they're going to be in the order of Hell's Bells, Empty Night, then Stars and Stones.

Book spoilers to follow

Just tried out all the decks and here are my thoughts:

Food is great as-is. Very synergistic, lots of fun, and most powerful.
Rohan is fun, but could use a little tuning to make it run more smoothly. Éowyn is very powerful.
Saruman is unfocused and a mess, but has potential. It's got a whole bunch of bad guy cards with flavorful names.
Galadriel just spun its wheels a lot doing nothing. May be better in a 3 or 4 player game, but needs work

@Ansi since you always post about rocket launches, I wanted to let you know that we might be launching 2 sounding rockets from Poker Flat Research Range this weekend
We're part of the first ever solar flare rocket campaign and we're sitting on the launch pad for 4 hours a day waiting for a solar flare. Our exact launch date and time is dependent on the Sun, but our window is open from 11:45 am - 3:45 pm from Saturday till Thursday, though we expect to launch this weekend

@Ansi

The 2 rockets that will be launching are FOXSI-4 and HI-C Flare, taking off 1 minute apart from each other.

The countdown clock and radio chatter will be live streamed from the channel below during the launch window.
We plan to count down to t-3 minutes each day and then hold there until we see a big enough flare, after which we will resume the count and launch.

Apparently in really needs GoreTex vascular grafts for surgeries and civilian injuries. A lot of hospitals have a major shortage of this material. If anyone knows someone who can donate this, even (especially?) expired material at hospitals, send me a message and I can put them in contact with someone that can help get it to people who need it.
Please boost for extra reach.

Hey all you and folks who might be going to this year.
Did you know that there's an Amtrak that runs between Chicago and San Francisco and a lot of places in between?
I've taken it and it's a gorgeous trip, especially through the mountains in winter. Additionally, it's much more friendly than flying!
Let's all take the train and have a bunch of fun science cars together

Well I've never milled someone out with my aggro deck before.

I was playing an Iroas deck against a Gitrog deck.

Iroas pretty much only kills by attacking.
The Gitrog player played Constant Mists every turn, meaning I couldn't deal combat damage.

I managed to win by putting a Helm of the Host on Etali, and attacking with an ever-increasing number of Etalis.

By the end I was exiling and casing 15 spells from OP's deck every turn.

Then they ran out of cards

Magic the Gathering card The Gitrog Monster
Magic the Gathering card Constant Mists
Magic the Gathering card Etali, Primal Storm

Artemis201,
@Artemis201@mstdn.social avatar

Also, by the end of the game I had basically my entire deck and OP's entire deck on my battlefield. It was dumb. I wish I'd gotten a picture.

Oh, also I had a Robber of the Rich stealing their cards too.
