So my manager had to change teams somewhat urgently because he couldn't make the commute to sunnyvale (where I don't live). He switched to managing a team closer to where he lives.

As a result, my new manager is now in Zurich, where I also don't live and is in a much less convenient timezone for me to meet with.

But at least he goes to the office in Zurich, so clearly that is better than not being in an office in Sunnyvale.

Bigou,

@hrefna I don't think I'll ever understand corporate logic…

Good luck with your new manager.

Ah, the delightful ups and downs of PC gaming! You know, it’s kind of like a long-standing tradition for some classic gems to disappear into the abyss of the forgotten, like that one sock you can never find a match for in the laundry!

So, let’s time travel for a bit, shall we? Hop in my DeLorean, and let’s punch 1995 into the flux capacitor. This was a year when the Sega Saturn was getting all giddy about porting the arcade superstar, Daytona USA. Simultaneously, the original PlayStation was doing a happy dance for the release of Ridge Racer. Meanwhile, the PC world was going, “Hold my floppy disk, I got this.” And boom! The PC whips out Screamer.

You got it, folks, Screamer was the PC’s high-octane, drift-filled retort to the polygon-hungry racing world. It revved up quite the show, offering high speed, buttery smooth scrolling, and a replay value so great it’d make a boomerang feel inadequate. Critics loved it too, with magazines like Maximum throwing a full-house 5-star party for it.

Here comes the fun part. Screamer was like that cool kid on the block who had the latest toys before everyone else. It offered free online play. I repeat, FREE. ONLINE. PLAY. Yep, before Xbox Live was even a glimmer in its creator’s eye, you could go head-to-head with your buddies over the Internet. Talk about being ahead of its time!

But here’s the tragedy, folks: How many of us remember the thrill that was Screamer? Very few, I wager. And that’s a bummer, because Screamer was like the Lewis and Clark of racing games. It was the first opus of the Italian developer Graffiti, who later bloomed into Milestone, the geniuses behind well-known speedsters like WRC, MXGP, and Ride. Screamer was the seed that grew into a racing empire!

The thing about Screamer is, it didn’t just race into our hearts, it turbocharged the belief that arcade-style racing games could zoom and drift into glory on the PC too. Heck, it even convinced quite a few folks to cozy up with a Pentium.

Yet, in the rearview mirror of time, this trailblazing racer has faded into a ghostly mist, a forgotten classic. To that, I say: Fiddlesticks! Here’s a tip of the hat to you, Screamer. You were indeed a game ahead of your time!

Bigou,

@atomicpoet @trinsec All to true. The only one that does is so CPU consuming, using a true CRT is cheaper in the end.

Not sure if I'm going to like it here, but Twitter is swiftly becoming untenable so thought I would post a bit here and see how this works. I'm an artist living in the Niagara region of Ontario. I'm still dealing with health problems from a Covid infection in early 2020 so my family is still taking Covid seriously & taking precautions. I have a tween in the public school system & my spouse is an educator. So, those are the 3 areas I'm most interested in.

I implemented groups in @pixelfed back in 2021, but never shipped it

It lead to Mastodon and other projects to start working on groups too

The main reason I've been holding off is because I want to get this right and provide a FB like groups experience

I'm no longer putting this off, and @pixelfed Groups will set a high bar in terms of group administration, moderation and portability.

It's not who did it first, it's who did it right 😎

Holy crap! SocialBu scheduler now gives you the ability to add alt text to images it posts to Mastodon.

THANK YOU.

That means I can now use this to schedule my posts and @writingtheother posts and drop @buffer like a hot potato!

And for my peeps who care about , SocialBu is one of the only schedulers that can send posts to Mastdon AND has alt text.

atomicpoet, (edited ) to internet

People are asking me what I think about joining the Fediverse. To review what I've said elsewhere, it's important to acknowledge five important realities:

  1. Meta can use ActivityPub, and nothing can be done about it. Fediblock doesn't prevent Meta from using ActivityPub because ActivityPub is an open protocol.

  2. A mass Fediblock (Gab style) is not happening. The big servers aren't doing it. And if the big servers aren't doing it, the medium and little servers don't have the power to enforce a mass Fediblock.

  3. The majority of people on the Fediverse don't care -- and many of them even want to connect with Meta. I know, this might surprise you. But based on my observations, most people won't be leaving mastodon.social because it federates with Meta.

  4. Even if the majority of Fediverse servers blocked Meta, that would still mean that certain unsavoury servers (which shall be unnamed) will likely connect with Meta -- and I certainly don't want those servers to be the face of the Fediverse for people who use

  5. Even if Meta pulled a Truth Social and didn't connect to the Fediverse, that does not prevent them from sucking up all that data from ActivityPub -- seeing how that data is, in fact, public.

Am I saying there's no value in blocking Meta? Not at all. Yes, block them if you don't want to send and receive messages to P92. Will that prevent Meta from seeing your messages? As I said, no, not at all. But at least that's data you haven't directly given to Meta (unless you're allowing RSS on your server). And it will also mean you won't receive messages from Meta -- if that's your purpose, blocking is good.

Now I've come to believe that when Meta joins the Fediverse, the Fediverse will largely be divided into three factions:

Faction 1: Servers that federate with Meta
Faction 2: Servers that don't federated with Meta, but federate with servers that federate with Meta
Faction 3: Servers that don't federate with Meta, and don't federate with any server that federates with Meta

Factions 1 and 2 will probably go on their merry way. It's Faction 3 that I believe will die because it's ultimately unfeasible.

"But Chris!" some might say, "There's that pact!"

Unless all those servers in that pact are only federating via white labeled servers who've signed that pact, the pact is useless. Such white labeling would mean that every server that federates must be manually reviewed. And it means that every new server that joins the Fediverse will be federated with Faction 1 and Faction 2 before they're federated with Faction 3.

Which ultimately means that Faction 3 gets tinier and tinier, especially as churn occurs, and those users don't get replaced by newcomers.

In the end, what will federation via white label achieve? Not a whole lot, except make certain people believe they have done something substantial to fight Meta when they haven't.

At a certain point, we have to accept reality: Meta will use ActivityPub, and most people using the Fediverse will talk to them.

So am I waving the white flag?

Not at all. What's important to acknowledge here is that it's not we, the Fediverse, who have conceded. It's Meta.

It's Meta who have given up ownership of their own corporate-owned network effect in order to join the Fediverse.

Despite this concession from Meta, I'm not happy about them joining the Fediverse.

However, there's another consideration: for people who use Meta. it's an incremental improvement over what they had before -- which was no federation. Again, less worse is better than worse. If the world is slightly better -- even if it's not ideal -- it's still better.

Do I want people to use Meta-owned social networks? Not at all.

Here's where I disagree with 99% of people panicking about Meta: I believe ActivityPub will ultimately be Meta's own undoing.

And I want to hasten this undoing 😊

Bigou,

@atomicpoet @VideoGamesArt Even ifit's only techically opensource?

Bigou,

@atomicpoet @VideoGamesArt In theory, but if the most popular services use proprietary extension to an open protocole, to the point of making it unusable without said extensions, is it still realy opensource?

Of course, there is no risk of this happening as soon as Meta join. But in the long run…
