How much alone time vs socializing do you need?

For me there are a few people who are usually equalizing, and I can just be around them, so I won't count that. But generally, I find about 3 times a week, I'm game for socializing. A day in between to rest is usually nice, but the larger the gathering or if we go somewhere particularly noisy or I'm meeting new people that involves more effort, and my social battery empties sooner. I'm very curious where everyone else falls on this!

@RickiTarr At a time it was 1:1. Every day I was social, a day to myself was enough to bounce back. Work definitely was a negative impact (5:2 sucks.)

Now, I think I'm at a 1:5 ratio thanks to societal burnout and political pressure coming from all sides. I spend 5 days off, only one workday is tolerable. Day #2 and I want another five days off. Vacations do not help.

@healyn @Adam_Cadmon1 The website is offline but there used to be a Yachtski Scale published by the Beyond Yacht Rock podcast. The scale rates songs, not bands, as even McDonald and Loggins dipped into and out of the "sound."

Anything above 60% is definite Yacht Rock, 59-35ish% is "Marina Rock", and South of 30% is "Easy Listening" or "Soft Rock."

@RickiTarr What makes me sad: Paramount+ ending series with less promised new works in the pipeline. At their peak, five series at a time per year. Now, I'm not sure that will ever happen again. (They clearly aren't interested in elevating one series to a full season commitment of 23 episodes. That would at least be a sign of good faith if they can't run more than a couple of shows.)

What doesn't make me sad: Faith of The Heart. I still love Enterprise, even if the presence of theme song lyrics made it weird.

I know everyone hates AI and I get it, I really do. I'm not trying to diminish people's concerns. All I'm saying is I tried a month of Midjorney to see what all the fuss was about and I blew through my credits in two days generating pictures of people covered in spaghetti.

So perhaps this is a cautionary tale after all.

He would only see women as mating partners. (Same mindset of anyone who says "all women love me" or "I know how to talk to any black person"... Seeing people as monolithic, pigeonholed "others".)

The same dude bro mindset who reduce women who cannot reproduce (various cancers have this as an outcome) as "not wife material".

He passed away, so I can call him an asshole all I want now to everyone I know. While he was alive, I was pushed to backpedal by friends and relatives, "he's trying", "he's not as smart as you, give him some credit".

No, he was a dick. I was his friend because there was literally no one else in my neighborhood my age to be around. (And it was the 90s. I was as informed on transmisia as any kid who watched Sifl and Olly.)

I don't know who needs to hear this, but DuckDuckGo makes their money by selling the eyeballs of its users to the highest bidder. What you search for affects the ads you see, because they sell "show this ad to anyone searching for that."

It's still surveillance capital when your actions dictate how much money the search engine makes, even when the advertisers don't know who you are.

Y'all I just made myself feel so old, hubs looked up top 100 music from 2001, 2011, 2021, and today and the amount of music I could recognize decreased by significantly. I recognized probably 70% of 2001 and decreasing as I went on. BUT I blame the internet, I can listen to exactly the kind of music I want with no dependence on the radio, but also I'm old!

@RickiTarr As a Gen Alpha kid put it to me, "Rock is out of the mainstream. When I hear it, it's what people your age listen to on ads I know aren't meant for people my age. Classic Rock means nothing to us because that describes all rock music as far as we care."

I could shake my fist at it, or I can try to understand it. Rock isn't the language of rebellion to the young anymore. Why use your parents favorite genre to try to disassociate yourself from prior generations? There is a bit of sense in that.

"So what do you listen to that upsets your parents?"

"I'm not a big music fan."

If that was my kid, that would do it.

What advice would you give to someone just starting out in a relationship?

Mine might sound kind of dark in relation to the question, but here goes:

People change, and they should, it's part of being a person. Some people are lucky, and they change in the same direction, but some don't, and that's okay too. There's no shame in leaving a relationship or changing the nature of a relationship that no longer serves you. We are all taught that every relationship, whether romantic or friendship, is supposed to last forever, but nothing is forever, and forcing something that no longer works, just ends in anger and bitterness. Knowing when to let go is as important as knowing when to hold on through a rough patch, and how to know either of those things is the most cliché advice of all, COMMUNICATE.

@krafty @RickiTarr Trust is probably the 2nd largest killer of relationships just behind money. And infidelity isn't even the main thought here. (That one is easier to say than do: keep your promises. If you can't, end it quick before your partner ends it anyway.)

Everyone deserves to be safe and protected, of course. What isn't discussed often is that people who have a very rigid standard of how they want to be treated beyond self respect and Mazlow's Hierarchy who don't put that up front typically, and if you aren't aware of that due to infatuation, once that glass breaks, it can turn love into resentment and loathing overnight.

And when it's made known, trust issues that appear from nowhere can feel like a lie but if they're not aware of what they're imposing on their partner when they do it... I mean how well does anyone know their self?

It's a trap of sorts; spending more time with someone helps reveal trust issues. And while you are blind to their real desires, it's all too easy to move too fast. (This goes for men as well as women.)

So the best advice is also the lamest because it doesn't help very much: be careful.

People can change. They change every day in ways you can never expect. But they'll never change how you want them to.

Teasing is mutual. One might be up for it when the other isn't and it ends quick once that is made clear. Bullying is not; it ignores a partner's needs and doesn't stop.

@econads @3dogcouch @RickiTarr In my experience, coincidental change confuses the perception. You want someone to appreciate something you do, they do, and it seems voluntary when it's mutual interests in alignment.

But that is a very pessimistic view of human relationships and analyzing my own failed engagement to a large degree. You might be right about him for all I know.

@RickiTarr Damn near everything. Coping is basically self-care and taking care of my car with a rigid timeline of fixes, because without it I am completely helpless. Something goes wrong at all and I am on my own.

Hearing everyone’s advice on the matter:

“Ask someone from your family to move in.” I did, repeatedly. No takers.
“Get another job to speed up your plans.” I’ve got three. At the same place, but maximizing my earning potential has already been realized. Extremely privileged I am in a position to do this, and still have weekends completely off.
“Get a 2nd Car.” Doesn’t change the fact I can only rely on myself (and AAA) if things go bad. Also double the expenses in several places: maintenance, registration, insurance, etc.
“Quit and do something else.” Uh, tech jobs are on the decline. If I do, it’s eating minimum wage at entry level jobs all over again hoping to get back to where I am now.
“Move somewhere else.” Oh, I’m trying. Especially when November comes around if the Darkest Timeline reaffirms itself, to hell with my plans and just get to safety.

I'd be a little happier if some Mac apps work on an iPad if you attach a Bluetooth Keyboard and Mouse or their Magic Keyboard thing. (File saving needs a look before they try that. The Files app remains clunky.) Close the app, back to iOS... I mean iPadOS, the totally different and not alike system.

It's terrible their country is being wiped off of the map and she's still thanking US students for the moment against the inevitability of either dying or facing an uncertain future as a refugee.

@Alice My brother (no longer with us anymore) felt that pain. Birthday four days after Christmas. So many years part of the gifts relied on another, so he'd get the wrong stuff first that would give away his birthday.

Or result in a key gift with zero accessories and him wondering if they're coming or Dec. 26th he needs to make returns to get what he wanted only to open a duplicate on Dec. 29th.
