the lesson I'm choosing to take from xz, as an oss maintainer, is that anyone trying to pressure or guilt me into doing something should immediately be told no, for security reasons

ChasMusic,
@ChasMusic@ohai.social avatar

@carol I suppose there's still the risk that someone can launch an open source project, make it super useful, wait until it's popular, then install a backdoor in the binary that isn't part of the released source code. ¿Is there a way to verify that binaries match source code? Like, I compiled this source code and the hash doesn't match the distributed binary's hash.

Note: I'm not a developer, I'm quality assurance.

More soy toots: when you buy soy sauce look at the ingredient list and label.

If it has ‘hydrolyzed soy protein’, it’ll be roughly the same quality as ‘cheap Chinese restaurant takeout soy sauce packets’. Soy sauce made from chemical processes. It doesn’t taste good to me and is usually amped up with sugar.

If it just says ‘soy beans’, and the label says ‘naturally brewed’ or ‘naturally fermented’ or ‘first draw soy sauce’ it will be pretty good.

ChasMusic,
@ChasMusic@ohai.social avatar

@skinnylatte Tried looking for it last time I was at the SF Nijiya and couldn't find it. There was another Nijiya house brand some-kind-of-sauce but no soy low or regular.

ChasMusic,
@ChasMusic@ohai.social avatar

@skinnylatte Guess it was out of stock. I'd be looking for 80-90% less, so likely not enough. Thank you anyway.

Another reason to add to your photos, basically, anywhere, is that, yes, there are sighted people that disable all images in their browsers because it's faster to browse.

ChasMusic,
@ChasMusic@ohai.social avatar

@potungthul @weirdwriter Hmm, actually, I think this is a place for a photo caption, as text on the web page, reading "wildfires are turning the afternoon sun red" while the alt text reads "red sun behind mountains". Alt text is meant to convey what a sighted person would see. Meaning belongs as text on the page.

There seems to be a distinctive sound to Thai rock music. I'm listening to my global music playlist in background & คนตัวเล็ก by Hobbit came on. Even though I'm not familiar with this song or the group, I knew the song was in Thai before the lyrics started just from the sound, :08 to :19. ¿Anyone who's into Thai rock notice this? ¿Is it the playing style? Or ¿do they use the same studio which puts out a distinctive sound?

@music By way of reference, I listen to a lot of Big Ass, AB Normal, Potato, Slot Machine, Tilly Birds, but I also listen to rock (and other music) from just about anywhere and there seems to be a distinctive sound to Thai rock.

You don't have to be a programmer to contribute to open source. All you need to do is be able to file a good bug report.

  1. What you did, step by step. This might include information about your computer and software configuration.
  2. What you expected to happen.
  3. What actually happened.

3 good things today:

  1. I debugged a slow-running toilet and now it's splorting upon flush once again

  2. I got my wish of a fish in a dish

  3. Had a good walk, including seeing the new artworks across from Alamo Square (down the hill from postcard row)

Now we know how COVID attacks your heart

"Mounting evidence now shows that SARS-CoV-2 is not only a respiratory virus, but it can also affect the heart and many other organ systems, says Ziyad Al-Aly, a clinical epidemiologist at Washington University in St. Louis."

A website that I have to use has some animations that bother me. I've complained about it but it's been a year and they've done nothing. I've examined their CSS and it's not there. Any idea how I might use Developer Tools to find the JavaScript code among the 20,000+ lines of JavaScript?

I don't like doing free work for a commercial website but if I don't point it out to them it doesn't seem like it will ever get fixed.

YouTube music often shows song titles for songs using non-Latin writing systems transliterated into the Latin alphabet, which makes the titles easier to read but hard to verify that the song is in a language that I'm seeking. I wish they would show the title both ways.

If lyrics are available, then I can use the lyrics to verify. But often they're not.

Three good things:

  1. delicious lunch outdoors with my bestie and her partner (okay that's two good things)

  2. solved the New York Times Sunday crossword

  3. patiently halved cherries (to remove the pits) for my microwave mini cherry cake

ChasMusic,

@PeterGray @3goodthings oh, cool. not sure if I want to add another posession for something I get to use perhaps one or two months out of the year during cherry season (or less, I usually eat them directly and stone them in my mouth rather than baking with them) but it's good to know such a thing exists in case I get such an interest.

Shoulda been more concerned with: sunburn.

Anyway, that's today's exercise sorted, and then some. I think XZibit would like ; it heard u like hills, so it put hills on its hills, so you can hike while you hike^W ride the funiculars.

@bitprophet I rode it whenever I went back to the 'burgh for a visit. I'd usually go up the Mon, walk to the Duquesne (with a detour to Shiloh Street), then down the Duquesne and catch a bus downtown at the foot.

Was trying to find a song for my playlist in Gujarati but YouTube Music's search feature is, um, kinda random. Returned among other things the wonderful song Ya Sudahlah by Bondan Prakoso & Fade2Black

My earworms often get triggered by seeing or thinking an object, such as a street sign, or word. For example, whenever I eat a potato or think the word "soon", there's a good chance I will earworm the excellent อีกไม่ช้า (Soon), by Thai rock group Potato (featuring Slot Machine).

ChasMusic,
@ChasMusic@ohai.social avatar

@music I would probably also earworm it if I ever saw a slot machine, but I never go to casinos, so it's unlikely that will happen.
