A heartbreaking moment that was saved by an SS photographer at Auschwitz II-Birkenau during the deportations of Hungarian Jews. It was taken 80 years ago, most likely in late May 1944. A little child finds a dandelion in the grass and is handing it or showing it to an older boy.

It boggles my mind that the Washington Post knew about the insurrectionist flag at the residence of a Supreme Court "Justice" at the time it was flown -- but didn't tell the public what it knew until years later, the NY Times did report it.

Journalistic malpractice is putting it mildly.

4 years to the day after George Floyd was murdered, here's where we are:

  • Racist people are just as racist as the day before George Floyd was murdered.

  • Black people are still asking for the exact same things.

  • "Liberal" and "Centrist" white Americans are more racist, and less supportive of DEI than they were the day before George Floyd.

  • Police budgets have grown faster than they did the day before George Floyd.

  • Biden has undone any of the gains made during the protests.

Given the long term policy of the pensions 'triple lock' has lifted many pensioners out of relative poverty (even if our pensions remain low by international standards), it make sense to suggest that a similarly long-term political commitment on child poverty is required - a 'child's lock' commitment to raise child-related benefits to a higher level & track them to rises in earnings & inflation.

Whether Labour will commit to this is another Q.

In the battle for the youth vote we now seem to have some clear blue water between the parties;

Labour is (at least at the moment) offering to lower the voting age to 16 - perhaps hoping that 18 year olds will see this as a positive move for their younger siblings?

Meanwhile the Tories are offering mandatory 'national service' at 18 to build character & experience....

Hmmm... while actually, I'm not sure the Tories idea is nuts, I can't see many 18 year olds going for it.

The key thing about the compulsive element (and this would need to be class blind - no buying your way out) is that people from diverse backgrounds would physically/socially interact - I'm not convinced that this is achieved online (but then again I'm over 60 & am sceptical about many of the claimed benefits off online 'community')

We went out to the Kenai Wildlife Refuge near Sterling, Alaska today. We call it Skilak for short as most of the lakes, trails, campgrounds, etc. are on Skilak Road within the Refuge. It's about 15 miles from where we live. Started out cloudy and then we had some sun. The lakes were all lovely.

Bottenintnin Lake is the very first lake you come to on Skilak Road inside the Kenai Wildlife Refuge. Snow-frosted mountains surround the lake.
Skilak Lake is HUGE! In this picture, you can see Frying Pan Island where folks like to camp. You can still see remnants of the big fire between the lake and the snow-frosted mountains.
Skilak Lake with snow-frosted mountains surrounding it. Skilak Lake Road is 18 miles long and full of campgrounds, lakes, trails, wildlife, etc.
