I quite often get emails from musicians, usually ones I know or ones who are starting off.

So receiving a direct email was hardly a surprise, except that sender was not only an established musician from the USA, but an experienced actor, Abigail Killmeier, with quite a TV and film history, appearing in “Fantasy Football” and “This is Us”.

She releases music under the name, Abigail Fierce and her music is available on all streaming platforms.

Abigail is an extremely talented musician and singer-songwriter.

Abigail writes all of her own music, and plays all of the instruments on her songs, except for drums. She's working on learning the drums.

She plays acoustic and electric guitar, bass, ukulele, and piano, but her most unique talent lies in her poetic, visceral, often poignant, songwriting.

She has over 4 million total streams on Spotify, under her artist name "Abigail Fierce."

Today in Labor History December 24, 1936: On Christmas Eve, drunk cops beat up 150 strikers on the Houston docks, sending 18 to the hospital. They were members of the Maritime Federation of the Gulf Coast. Gilbert Mers, who had dual membership in the Maritime Federation and the IWW, was their leader. Violence against dockers was rampant along the gulf coast in the 1930s. In July 1934, three black longshoremen were shot to death during a strike. In 1935, longshoremen struck along the entire gulf coast, with 14 more workers getting killed. From 1936 to 1938, 28 union members were killed and over 300 injured in strikes. Mers’ autobiography, “Working the Waterfront: The Ups and Downs of a Rebel Longshoreman,” was published in 1988, ten years before his death, at age 90. As a young man, Mers worked the docks in Corpus Christi, but went on to become President of the Corpus Christi Central Labor Council and the President of the Maritime Federation of the Gulf Coast, while remaining a dedicated dual member of the IWW throughout his life. He was part of the effort to establish an industry-wide union along the Gulf Coast states. In his autobiography, he exposes the brutality and corruption of the Texas Rangers in the 1930s-‘40s, and their use as violent, strike-breaking bullies with badges.

Vernon Ferdinand Dahmer's fight for voting rights and against racial terror is emblematic of the grassroots activism that characterized the civil rights movement. And he paid the ultimate price. His story is a powerful narrative of resistance and resilience against the backdrop of one of America's most oppressive periods.

@Deglassco The "one-drop" attitude is interesting. In Australia, it's the opposite, some refuse to acknowledge First Nations people because they are not black enough. This gave rise to the "still tea" saying by First Nations people here, it doesn't matter how much milk you put in tea, it's still tea. Sounds like it would have been used against blacks in the USA.

Markets have been “replaced by digital trading platforms which look like, but are not, markets”. The moment you enter amazon.com “you exit capitalism” and enter something that resembles a “feudal fief”: a digital world belonging to one man and his algorithm, which determines what products you will see and what products you won’t see.

In 1943, U.S. forces in Britain expected to export racial segregation. When white American Military Police (MPs) insisted a local pub segregate, the owner said he would. When MPs returned next day, they were met with “Blacks Only” signs & British barmaids telling white soldiers to wait their turn when they thiught they would be served before black soldiers. This set the stage for the epic Battle of Bamber Bridge.

@Deglassco Thank you for another fascinating record from social history.

Read this.

Deglassco, (edited ) to history

Louis Daniel Armstrong's relationship with racism influenced not only his music but also the broader discourse on race in America. The barriers he broke as a Black musician are undeniable. The “Uncle Tom” criticism levied at him by some prominent Black Americans of the day was a reflection of the complex & sometimes contentious relationship between art, politics, & race in the United States.

@Deglassco Thank you for these toots. Being from "down under" the subtleties of the paths that people like Louis Armstrong followed is largely unknown here.
