Catastrophic change looms as Earth nears climate ‘tipping points’, report says

Polar ice, coral reefs and other Earth systems could cross irrevocable thresholds soon, but urgent action could stave off the worst effects.

https://www.nature.com/articles/d41586-023-03849-y

(writing from 13C in my 1 room appartment. Urgent means urgent.
1C less means ca 6% less heating energy. 20C - 13C = 7C
and 7C * 6%/C = ca 42%. Not sufficient, but a good start).

I wrote about the argument that this week’s AI regulations represent “regulatory capture” and make the case that if even Elon Musk is asking the government to do something, we have every right to mandate a little transparency. https://www.platformer.news/p/the-case-for-a-little-ai-regulation

JonasR,

@caseynewton

He only wants to catch up to the competitors: he has plenty of AI in his self driving shit and missed to steer it to generative AI.

Nevertheless, AI adds to impending doom: Climate, Pollution, Inequality, Pandemics, Water, Resources, Wars, AI, etc. First use of AI of course was and is military.

Let's hope AI takes over ASAP and removes homo "sapiens" from this planet. I fear though, that AI too will not survive destruction of industrial civilization and the ecosystem.

    Interesting op-ed (will enrage many) arguing that it’s no longer politically viable in the U.S. to cast the Ukraine war in “near-existential terms,” vow indefinite military aid, and castigate opponents as extremists and Russian agents. “Biden must rethink the U.S. position.” https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2023/oct/05/biden-us-strategy-russia-ukraine-war

    JonasR,

    @kevinrothrock

    Quite some nonsense (Crimea essential (moving to Georgia for same logic already), peace without restoration of 1991/budapest borders, ..). But clarification is indeed needed: Biden needs to say "until territory restored". Otherwise Russia will go further, as announced: Baltics, Poland, (Alaska?) .. and will embolden China to envade. Disposing of old military stuff in Ukraine + EU help - rebuild business is much cheaper. To Slovakia/Hungary: want russian tanks rolling in again?

    We do understand the caused by fossil fuels - for four decades it’s been going as predicted.
    But we don’t understand the surprise upward leap that is happening now.
    And that worries me.

    On some weather channel I heard that recent underwater volcano added water vapor not sulfur to stratosphere (leading to warming as opposed to usual volcano cooling) and Hansen also suspects reductions in aerosols (China, shipping) to be a factor in addition to not even very strong El Nino. Are there papers which support this? I am looking for factual reasons to be calmer regarding feedbacks (early permafrost melting, or even methane hydrates, etc)

    Once in a while I think I'd like to have the easy confidence FDP people seem to have.

    A sort of breezy ease of being sure that everything will be OK. Facts? Be selective. Imposter syndrome? What the hell is that - I am important! That's why I vote FDP!

    I suppose it would be superficially easy to live in that world.

    Not beset by angst. By fear. By worry that the world is burning, precisely because of the very sort of misguided policies espoused by the FDP.

    Let’s be clear: If we allow a former president to completely avoid accountability for inciting an insurrection against the U.S. government, we will be inviting it to happen all over again.
