The news about journalism isn't all bad. It's gratifying to see that The Lever is expanding in a serious way.

The Lever does accountability journalism. The publication picks its spots, with excellent aim. (I'm a paying subscriber.)

Nice piece by CDC Director Mandy Cohen in NEJM on Integrating Public Health & Health Care. However, the relationship between public health & healthcare isn't that simple. First, a piece on the medicalization of public health and the consequences of that move. 1/ https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2791244/

NoOneSpecial1,
@NoOneSpecial1@mastodon.social avatar

@gregggonsalves In the US, if the healthcare you need doesn't produce a profit for someone, you don't get it. We don't "invest" in public health because hedge funds and/or others can't make a quick profit. The whole stinking system is morally bankrupt. Only when we value health will we, as a society, change.

Invented Narratives and the Outrage Industry

It took me several years to understand what I was seeing.

At first, I thought the problem was Twitter algorithms. I thought that was the explanation for why what I was calling rage-inducing simplifications spread like wildfire.

If you have friends who are unglued about the Supreme Court decision and are simplifying the conclusions, you can send them to the piece I just posted.

Warn them that it is long, and that I will be taking apart some of their favorite legal pundits.

There was a time when I removed names before I critizied people.

No more.

I will qualify my prediction ⤵️
https://mastodon.social/

Lawyers are always trying to predict what courts will do. That's part of the job.

Nobody gets it right all the time. If everyone knew what courts would do the practice of law would be very different. It's always a calculation.

NoOneSpecial1,
@NoOneSpecial1@mastodon.social avatar

@Teri_Kanefield and I humbly suggest considering:

  1. Courts, even SCOTUS, make mistakes; sometimes HUGE mistakes that can cripple society.

  2. Lawyers can also make mistakes. It is astounding to me to watch the handwringing and wailing of the lawyer/pundit class who regularly told us one thing, only to have another turn out to occur.

Humans are a flawed species.

I'll admit this week's blog post was fun to write (even if the topic, demagogues, is unsavory).

How many times do I get to quote Prof. Harold Hill, post the drawing of a stork, and mention that the latest judgment against Trump was for $355 million ($450 million with prejudgment interest)?

The picture is to avoid the 500 error message

@Teri_Kanefield We need to understand that there is a big difference between a liar politician and a post-truth politician. Calling Trump a liar is not accurate; Trump is a post-truth politician and they are much more dangerous to democracy. Inside the appeals court hearing in the of in Trump's 2020 election conspiracy criminal case

Hearing is in the 6th floor ceremonial courtroom. Huge. The size of a small church. Rows and rows of wooden benches. Quite cold inside.
Trump attorney John Sauro is arguing first. He's speaking exceptionally fast. Scratchy voice. He got just 1-2 minutes in... until a judge interjects.

Our family is devastated by the death of Jeannie Kaplan, one of the great advocates for public schools. Jeannie was a true hero & inspiration, who became one of our closest friends in Denver. My kids have known her all of their lives. I will so miss her counsel and encouragement through all the ups and downs of my work. I'll also miss her amazing Hanukkah and July 4th family celebrations, which became an annual ritual for our family. What an incredible life she lived, and what a loss this is.

Consider: People often remark that cats often suddenly stop and stare in strange directions, seemingly looking at nothing at all. What humans don't understand is that the cat is in fact not looking, but listening; the cat has heard something, and is turning its head so its ears are cupped in the direction of the sound.

Implication: If elves were real, they would often as a group swiftly turn their heads to apparently stare at nothing at all, swiveling their ears slightly as they do so

NoOneSpecial1,

This drive home is more brutal than most. We spoke to father in law as we drove, told us he’s ready to go, wishes it wd happen “as peaceful & easy” as his wife went. Sigh. Not easy to hear. He’s under hospice care, nothing imminent though.

Backstory: yrs of congestive heart failure finally taking its toll. He’s 97(!). Still sharp.

We leave Portland for Medford, OR today, then to Sacramento, then home to SoCal.
