@dannotdaniel thanks .. yeah, it's the first time in like six years. Nothing much of value was taken (pro tip: don't leave expensive or irreplacable stuff in your vehicle) but it's a few hundred dollars to get the windshield replaced.

I'm sick of justifying ethical behavior in terms of profit. We use phrases like "adding alt-text brings more customers to your site" or "protected bike lanes increase revenue for local businesses."

You should add alt-text descriptions to images because it helps people.

We need to build bike lanes because it makes cities safer and more accessible.

Reduce carbon emissions because it's the right thing to do! Discussing these things in purely economic terms misses the point.

RebelGeek99,
@RebelGeek99@mastodon.social avatar

@docpop I think it's done in the erroneous intention of trying to get wannabe capitalists and the oligarchs they fawn over to start giving a shit about other humans. It kind of makes sense until you realize their aims are diametrically opposed to what they would cast as "impractical feel good hippy dippy bullshit" (i.e., being a decent human), imo

I wonder (but not too much) what would happen if/when Trump is POTUS again but faced with a Dem controlled House and Senate.

That might actually be the best outcome we can hope for in the . We can hope there's some iota of justice that's meted out by the courts, but there was no legislative path forward after Pelosi seated 130+ sworn Seditionists in Congress.

At least w Trump 2.0, shitlibs might be upset about the stuff Biden gets a pass for just bc it's Trump.

RebelGeek99,
@RebelGeek99@mastodon.social avatar

I say I don't wonder about it too much because it's still the duocracy, and even with Dem majorities in both legislative chambers we can assume rotating villains will replace Manchinema in the Senate and Blue Dog Centrists will always side with R's on any key policy votes. The Progressives will get really quiet again until mid-terms, refuse to vote as a block, and whatever minimal crumbs are permitted by R's will be heralded as bipartisan "wins" as rights and conditions erode further.

RebelGeek99,
@RebelGeek99@mastodon.social avatar

I'm not going to tell you how to vote- many of my moots on here have zero faith in the electoral system, and rightfully so. I will ask that you for the best candidates, because this is often where the buck stops and meaningful change is possible.

My own conservative suburb is a good example - a campaign for a city council seat won against a corporate backed shill in 2021. Outspent 10:1, she triumphed by some 52 votes and has consistently delivered for our .

The biggest indication that Trump and the Republican Party have normalized the possibility of criminal activity by the President is how rarely coverage of Trump’s current trial for criminally falsifying records to cover up campaign expenditures tops newspaper websites.

RebelGeek99,
@RebelGeek99@mastodon.social avatar

@heidilifeldman the "hush money" narrative has done a great job of obfuscating his direct role in election interference, making the whole thing seem like some tired tawdry affair, a little snafu, just like Clinton's indiscretion getting a BJ in the office, but even less relevant somehow because it was an adult entertainer and it really doesn't matter at all to his base, dismissed as so much unfair left-biased covfefe. As impressive as it is demoralizing for anyone fighting for equity & justice.

@msquebanh nice! Even though I hate eggplant lol. Free is still a good price, I can appreciate that.

Pro tip: If you add enough batter and seasoning and deep fry it enough, it helps conceal the flavor.

People get so cranky at Black folk for pointing out the irrefutable evidence that Biden's Covid policies got a lot of people long Covid, and caused a lot of other people to die of Covid unnecessarily.

You can get mad at me. You can yell "Trump is worse!" until your voice gets hoarse. I'm not talking about Trump. I'm talking about pandemic decisions made during this administration.

Amazing that, even at his age, Alito can stand on his head to read the law.
"One particularly notable hypothetical came from Alito, who raised the prospect that an outgoing president who loses a closely contested race but fears indictment upon leaving office might try to remain in power, creating 'a cycle that destabilizes the functioning of our country as a democracy. ' ”

RebelGeek99,
@RebelGeek99@mastodon.social avatar

@dougiec3 @lin11c they're just dragging their heels. It would disrupt the duocracy if the R's lose too much face. The delicate balance of power that ensures moderate centrism and fascism continue to work hand in hand to effect the upward transfer of wealth would be unsettled.

Notice how nothing was done, even nominally, symbolically, the two years that D's had trifecta control of WH, Senate, and House, after Pelosi promptly seated the Seditionist Caucus after they disavowed the 2020 results.

RebelGeek99,
@RebelGeek99@mastodon.social avatar

@lin11c @dougiec3 agreed. Fetterman and Kelly are the new rotating villains we have to look forward to... And yeah, the Blue Dogs are reprehensible, I live in a district represented by one of them (MGP of ).

They have it all figured out. Sinema voted with Dems more often than Sanders (>90% of the time), but not on the big ticket items. The DINO representing my district is much the same - ran on a Bernie-lite platform, now votes w D's >80% of time but stomps down any big ticket items.

I think Toyota was right all along.

It’s an unpopular opinion among EV purists, but I think hybrids will reduce a lot more carbon emissions than BEVs, for the simple reason that way more people can switch. Even without access to charging outlets, hybrids are far more efficient thanks to their regenerative braking. With access to outlets, they are as good as EVs within their electric range, which will account for most of the daily commutes of their owners, and all with far smaller batteries and better costs of ownership than BEVs.

The way to eliminate emissions due to personal transportation is not to put people in BEVs. It’s to eliminate commutes and massively invest in (electrified) public transportation.

@drahardja quite the spicy take! 🔥lolz

I'm curious what trend will win out over the next five to ten years. I'm team "cycling, e-bikes, and mass transit ftw" when it comes to decarbonizing transportation, but it's still interesting to see what direction the shift from combustion engines will take.

@ABScientist I was just thinking about it this morning. Honestly, even with the language barriers at times, it has been so nice to not be a social outcast for wearing PPE during an ongoing pandemic. It's stupid how politicized it is in the West.

Even if it isn't the plague, there's so many fertile walking incubators for other bugs (rhinovirus, coronavirus, strep a, measles, mpox, etc.) right now, I am taking steps to minimize my exposure to any of them on this trip.

An old practice from movements that I think we should try out for this pandemic: at the beginning of events, inviting audiences to call out the names of people who aren’t here because of the virus. Covid deaths, long covid, people sick today, immuno-inaccessible events, caregivers, etc. It’s so hidden, people think they don’t know anyone despite the huge numbers.

RebelGeek99,
@RebelGeek99@mastodon.social avatar

@beandreams I've found, when slightly pressed, many people do meekly acknowledge they know someone close maimed or affected... but the propaganda to ignore our pain now that "COVID is over" is very strong and it disrupts business as usual when the emotions are allowed to surface.

Not allowing the emotions to surface, to sit with them and process the loss, will have dire consequences for mental health downstream... sadly, this path seems all but fixed for most people. 😔

How the fuck are parents reconciling the frequent childhood illnesses that seem to be ripping through all my friends' households? This is not normal. We were never this sickly when I was growing up-- and I was one of the "sickly" ones (I had a bad dust allergy). I don't even have kids and I see it 😒

Denial can be a powerful agent, so I'm assuming that's how it's being dealt with until it can no longer be dismissed at scale. This is all so messed up.

RebelGeek99,
@RebelGeek99@mastodon.social avatar

@jik I think you're right, you articulated it well. Denial is a natural response to overpowering feelings of fear and anxiety. Do you have any hope that the illusion will shatter within our lifetimes?

I started reading "And The Band Played On", seeing some striking parallels in how the AIDS epidemic was handled early on, so I'm thinking eventually something will give ... but will it be years? Decades? I try not to think about it too much but have been a healthcare grunt for 20yr so yeah 🤷🏻‍♂️
