Something you can't unsee once you see it:

The Harvard alumns making the loudest noise about "Fair admissions" and not "lowering the standards..." are legacy admission babies. 🙂🙃

Wake me up when they start campaigning against legacy admissions.

For people outside the US: legacy admissions is where Harvard says "You might not meet our academic standards, but your parent or ancestor did, and that's good enough for us! Welcome to Harvard! Continue your legacy!" 🤡

Rhube,
@Rhube@wandering.shop avatar

@mekkaokereke I remember learning about legacy admissions when I was a (UK) grad student. A professor's wife (and eminent botanist) was tell me that she was a legacy admission. I was shocked and appalled at what was obviously nepotism. She was equally shocked, as though no one had ever said it to her before - she must have been in her 60s.

She explained to me that it was part of a lecturer's compensation to have their kids admitted automatically. I was like 'You get that that's worse, right?'

Cannot stress this enough: if you think you have Long COVID: DO NOT EXERCISE.

I know it feels like you can, but post-exertional malaise means that the damage you do when you exercise you may not feel for a day or two. Exercising makes you WORSE. It causes damaging chemical reactions. And the first six months (when you probably haven't got a diagnosis) are your best shot at recovery, but only if you REST. Completely.

I despair when I see people say they think they have LC and then go jogging.

OK, I am fucking angry about this.

Talked for the first time on a Zoom call to a doctor today about IBS and the first Facebook Ad I see?? Begins with a man saying 'DIARRHOEA!'

I scrolled away as fast as I could, but not before I saw the text underneath confirm it was about IBS.

This is the EXACT REASON Zoom should be sued into oblivion and fined vast quantities of cash for their data harvesting policies. need to GET OFF ZOOM. Your clients' personal info is being stolen.

Honest question for white people that don't consider themselves racist:

White nationalists have been vocal about their attacks on DEI. These are literally the same people that talk about Charlottesville, Jan 6th, and ethnic cleansing.

They've laid out exactly how they plan to destroy DEI.

  1. Make false claims that DEI is about giving unqualified Black people an unfair advantage

  2. Work with racist politicians to use this as a pretext to make all DEI programs illegal.

1/n

Rhube,
@Rhube@wandering.shop avatar

@mekkaokereke They're attacking disabled people and trans people too, and that's part of the reason I am now out of work. I was part of my work's DEI programme. I worked with Black and other marginalised colleagues to resist changes that removed 'inclusivity' from our values. Marshaling the other ERG leaders to take concrete steps to communicate with the executive and addressing them in language that would be persuasive heavily impacted my own health. We didn't get our leaders to put inclusivity

If you're on Tumblr, the AI scraping is being rolled out NOW NOW NOW.

You can turn on 'Prevent third-party sharing for [blog name]' to opt out.

You have to do this for each blog individually. It wasn't there for me at first, but when I navigated to my blog settings via View blog it updated - don't know if that was coincidence. Anyway:

On web: select Account > Your blog > View blog > Blog Settings

I'm off to see if there's anything I can do on WP.

Rhube,
@Rhube@wandering.shop avatar

ON WORDPRESS:

Log in. Go to Settings. Scroll down to Prevent third-party sharing for [blog name].wordpress.com and select the checkbox. Save Settings.

'According to the filing, it accused OpenAI of engaging in "systematic theft on a mass scale".'

George R R Martin and other authors with actual money and clout are suing OpenAI.

YES. FINALLY.

I'm so ANGRY about OpenAI. The fact that a friend tried to defend it to my face makes me furious.

Someone like me could never fight this, but GRRM can make them hurt.

Just heard that the Health Secretary is using the 'issue' of permitting transgender people to be treated on wards with other people of the same gender as a distraction from the NHS strikes.

Let me repeat: rather that talk about the NHS strikes and NHS underfunding, the Health Secretary is pursuing a crusade against sick trans people.

I am SO furious. SO disgusted.

This. On top of everything else.

My rage has robbed me of words.

The reason we don't have UBI is not because it doesn't work, but because they do not want to close the gap between the rich and the poor.

They know if we had more free time and money we would rebel. The goal is to keep us exhausted and work us into the grave. That's literally the plan.

: I write science fiction and fantasy, and angry poems.

I'm especially proud of 'Homely Magic', published by Distant Shore Publishing https://distantshorepublishing.com/2021/06/18/homely-magic/ and 'Just Me', in Underland Arcana, Issue 4, https://www.underlandarcana.com/ro-smith-just-me/ both of which explore magic and family from a queer perspective, and feature non-binary characters.

I'm agender, and use she/her/hers pronouns.

I also draw, garden, craft, & am chronically ill.

Just give people benefits without assessment. For real.

Universal basic income.

You're asking the least capable people to do something that if they need the money they are not equipped to do well and then usually refusing the money for spurious reasons.

Just give people money.

Able people, please: Write to your representatives and say you want universal basic income. Don't just say it on social media.

Can't believe I went through all this for £24 a week.

people: I've been told of a service near me that will give you IV fluids (with electrolytes if needed) for £100. I think this could help me, but what I'm looking for is first person accounts of the effectiveness of this.

If you had it, did it help? If it helped, how long did it help for?

I can afford a one off payment for something like that, but if it doesn't last very long, I'm not sure it's worth it.

People with experience only please, not speculation.

Throwing this out into the ether on the off-chance:

I have a Green Power Electric Boot Scooter BH220. I need to remove the battery. Green Power won't tell me how as they want to charge for an engineer to come out.

It has a handle and I'm meant to be able to take it inside to charge it. I was shown how to remove it when I first got it, but I can't remember. I can lift w/handle, but it feels stuck at the front end. How do I release it?

Today I am bummed by the skills and knowledge that as a society wendon't think are worth paying for.

The art we won't buy. The books we won't pay for. But also the teaching and curation and public dissemination of knowledge.

The careers we massively undervalue that as so much more important than our ability to automate things that become LESS valuable and LESS interesting when they're not made by humans.

What a horrible world, with so many people who could make it better if we PAID them.

Can anyone recommend a good therapist for online treatment? I'm trying to research it on my own and it's exhausting. A testimonial from someone saying 'this one knows their stuff and isn't a dick/is easy to talk to' would really help. The ones I've found don't seem to offer sample sessions like other therapists. The last therapist i approached did have a sample session and was awful, so I'm wary.

Woman or non-binary person preferred. Experience with preferred if you know.

Trans people are great, actually. Shout out to everybody who has found the courage to be themselves.

And also to those who want to but it wouldn't be safe, or they're just not ready yet. It's OK to not want to be visible too.

I'm glad that that Guardian article ppl are passing around today encourages vaccination, but it unfortunately contains misinformation that states prior infections and previous vaccinations (more than 6 months ago) already provide good protection. They just don't! Not if it was over 6 months ago, and not against Long COVID, which is a risk that goes up with each infection.

I cannot, therefore, in good conscience, boost it.

Which pisses me off because we NEED more national coverage of this!

Anti-maskers, gtfo.

And yes, if you're going out to indoor places or crowds and not wearing a mask, you are an anti-masker.

I've noticed that, inexplicably, people don't seem to get this: not wearing a mask in places where you can spread infection means you are an anti-masker.

And I'm done with you.

Rhube,
@Rhube@wandering.shop avatar

'But I don't want to be thought of as an anti-masker!'

So don't be one :-O

Srsly tho, no social stigma you feel about wearing masks compares to what you are doing to me, and every other medically vulnerable person. Not even a little bit.

The line is a dot to you.

Grow up.
