An important change from local to remote biomedical research
https://youtu.be/KeGlH3oEjTM?si=0YUM-U_xgPIy78W0

"Here's a brief update on my recent shift from traditional clinical trials to remote clinical trials in which individuals can participate from anywhere in the United States. I already have an ongoing remote trial for Gulf War Illness and hope to expand to fibromyalgia, Long-COVID, and ME/CFS. This remote approach is not common, but is being embraced by an increasing number of labs. I am excited that this change will give people the opportunity to participate who never could before." - Jarred Younger

Viral infections pose early heart risks

> "From a clinical perspective, our understanding of viral infection of the heart has focused on inflammation, causing problems with the rate or rhythm of the heartbeat… But we have found an acute stage when the virus first infects the heart and before the body's immune response causes inflammation. So even before the tissue is inflamed, the heart is being set up for arrhythmia."

Lately I've been wondering about the role of the heart in health besides its vital function in keeping blood circulating.

For example, it makes atrial natriuretic peptide, which is anxiolytic. IIRC the heart also releases exosomes.

Then there's neural feedback from the heart to the brain, which is linked to consciousness.*

I interviewed for a PhD program in immunology just over 20 yrs ago. One of the professors told me they could detect any infection based on a set of blood biomarkers. I though to myself, 'A smart burglar knows how to to break into a house without setting off the alarm system.' But I said nothing - who was I to question this prominent scientist; my background was in organismal ecology and I had only just begun to read the immunology literature. This professor also said in conversation with another prospective student that ME/CFS was psychogenic.

Seems like quite a few sacred objects contain meteorite materials / are meteorites.

Naomi Levine described obtaining a piece of 'sky metal' *; she ascribed a supernatural origin to it. But is seems likely that 'sky metal' = meteorite.

PS - search on 'meteorite' in Google 🥚

The only doctor that treats in western Canada has declined my referral, which was at the request of a cardiologist I waited to see for 5 months.

I can’t even with this country. I hate this medical system. I hate it. All of it. I’m so tired of having to be my own doctor/case manager. For f*cks sake.

I have a diagnosis, and I’m on a medication for treatment but was told to be followed by a specialist after I moved here 9 months ago.

How is this at all ethical?

There are some illnesses for which you only get help if you are very lucky or very rich - doesn't seem to matter which country.

Has anyone read that book- How to be More Clever and Faster

I’d buy and read it in a heartbeat. We’re going through a phase where son broke 2 pairs of his glasses in less than hour. He also tried to rip out the electric cable on a recliner. Unwary caregiver was lucky to pry Drew’s iron grip fist clutching his wired ear buds that were dangling. Fun stuff, eh?

Steve Horvath, inventor of the Horvath Clock - a measure of biological aging based on DNA methylation changes, has called Down syndrome the 'ultimate progeroid syndrome' - meaning it is a rapid aging syndrome.

I also recall a talk on NUS Medicine's Healthy Longevity webinar series by another researcher (unfortunately don't remember which one), where they showed evidence for rapid brain aging in adults w/ ASD. So that's that's why I play lots of word games and read scientific papers daily. I also took paroxetine for a few years, which is associated with increased dementia risk.

The growing season isn't short in terms of temp., but it is short from the standpoint of leaf-footed bugs - around mid-July they overwhelm my garden. I've wondered about putting bags made out of insect netting around the vine tips where the tomatoes are forming to keep the bugs off. I grow indeterminate cherry tomatoes and they are too tall to cover the whole plant with netting. I was able to cover my pepper with netting, though.

Any place I can purchase horestail (Equisetum arvense) spores so I can grow them? Is that how one would propagate them?

They are supposed to be all over the place in disturbed areas but I don't recall seeing them anywhere here in the RTP area of North Carolina.

Um, not in my budget!

Unfortunately, I have not seen any growing around here.

If I purchased whole herb from a reputable vendor like Mountain Rose Herbs, would there be viable spores mixed in?

Wow! I just learned the story of an amazing colleage:

https://chasingmycure.com/

I'm a patient with a deadly illness that has nearly killed me five times, and I'm also a physician-scientist racing to discover a cure before my time runs out.

Thanks to a drug that I discovered to treat my disease and began testing on myself, I'm currently in my longest remission ever and was able to have a beautiful daughter (2018) and son (2021) with the love of my life.

I dedicate my life to advancing cures for Castleman disease and many more diseases through Every Cure, spreading our innovative approach to other diseases.

Fajgenbaum's story is really fascinating, and I think, instructive.

He pointed out to his oncologist the pupura that would appear right before a disease flare; his dr's response was it was nothing to worry about. But Fajgenbaum was not 'worried' about them, he was pointing them out since they might indicate something about the disease process. The appearance of the pupura were what lead him to anti VEGF therapy as a means of suppressing flares.

The above is from memory, and I don't have time to review, so my apologies if incorrect.

I think it was this interview that I saw, but YT says I have not watched it -

Can anyone help ID this plant?

It has leaves similar in appearance and odor to those of oregano, thyme, and marjoram. I took a cutting; the stems are woody.

The base is around 12" / 30 cm in diameter. It's still green and I'm in zone 7b/8a and we have had nights down to 22 deg F / -5.5 C so far this winter.

The seed stalks are quite tall - 30" / 75 cm; having separate flower / seed stalks does not seem typical of oregano / thyme plants.

The probiotic part is similar, but it lacks the prebiotic component - though there are fiber products that could be used in combination. NOW has an XOS prebiotic called Bifido Boost. I can't take NOW products since most of them, including this one, contain some form of corn (I'm allergic).

I use Regular Girl for IBS-C - it helps a bit with the constipation, but what's interesting is that it got rid of most of the warts on my hands. It's a combination of B. lactis and partially hydrolyzed guar gum (aka Sunfiber).
I usually take 2 scoops a day.

According to the new 2023 USDA Hardiness Zone Map, I'm now in Zone 8a.

Not surprising with global warming.

This means I should be able to plant some new (to me) perennials, but I'm wondering about that. Last year I lost a Texas tarragon, I think due to the unusually hard freezes (11 deg F) we had. It seems like the unpredictable extremes that climate change causes might mess up the whole zone map thing.

Our latest puzzles are inspired by Bismuth crystals. Lab-grown Bismuth forms geometric crystals with a staircase-like shape called a hopper. The hopper shape results from there being a higher growth rate at the outside edges than the inside ones, leaving a hollow center. One really cool thing about Bismuth is that it's the most diamagnetic element. An applied magnetic field creates an induced magnetic field in Bismuth in the opposite direction, causing a repulsive force. https://n-e-r-v-o-u-s.com/blog/?p=9465

It's my understanding that even posts containing selected words that are untagged will be blocked by filters. But it's nice to tag, also. I have filters set up for food since in recent years I have developed a lot of allergies and sometimes it is just a bit too much to see what nice things people are cooking for themselves (I used to be a decent home cook). Unfortunately some people just post pictures, no words.
