Hi, I'm James. Eternal dilettante and purveyor of nonsense, much of it about #Python or #physics. I work for a computer vision company whose customers actually care about results, so the current """AI""" craze is slowly melting my brain. I boost more than I post. TANSTAAFL
the most important part of #Unicode history is when a mouse fell out of a light fixture and got added to the count of members present at a Technical Committee meeting (9 Nov 2016)
MASTODON TIP OF THE DAY: This seems to be as good a time as any to remind you that you can use "in:library" with search terms in your Mastodon search (at least, with the advanced web interface), to search for text in the Mastodon posts you have made in the past. Please see the attached image for an example:
Max Planck presented work on blackbody radiation to the German Physical Society #OTD in 1900. His novel “quantum hypothesis” suggested that matter emits and absorbs light with frequency f only in discrete chunks of energy E=hf.
@mcnees my favorite example of a scientific discovery that required some humility:
"When I began my physical studies and sought advice from my venerable teacher Philipp von Jolly...he portrayed to me physics as a highly developed, almost fully matured science...fairly secured, and theoretical physics approached visibly that degree of perfection which, for example, geometry has had already for centuries."
Lucky thing that he wasn't dissuaded by von Jolly's picture of "dead end" physics!
Probably one of the most informative "error" messages I have seen in years. Informative to technogeeks without being off-putting to normal users. Well done, #Tusky
huge thanks to Fastly for supporting my work by including my websites in their "fast forward" program! they're generously providing caching services for @web3isgreat and citation needed.
@molly0xfff I feel like it's an underappreciated fact that all of PyPI's CDN is through them at a 100% discount on a bill that would otherwise be ~$2 M/month (or perhaps more, that figure is several years old now)
@whitequark an infinite number of mathematicians walk into a bar. The first one orders a beer, the second orders half a beer. The bartender sighs, says "you're all idiots", and pours two beers.
Once again feeling the acute pain of C++ code written to call abort() (via std::terminate()) promptly instead of letting an exception propagate to my Python bindings which could recover from the error.
So cool to see AEDs discussed in @brainwane 's closing keynote at #PyConUS. My brother helps maintain this infrastructure (caring for others) certifying the devices on a regular inspection schedule. Very meaningful to me that she has helped make data on AEDs more accessible :blobfoxheartcute:
Today's itch is repeatedly asking what version of [package] introduced an incompatible requirement on [other package], so I wrote a small #Python tool for querying the #PyPI JSON APIs to get an answer.
Getting around to reading the 'new' "Absolute minimum" blog post about dev knowledge about #Unicode, and I assume parts of it are going to rub me the wrong way
#Monsterdon is a fediverse community event where a bunch of folks watch a monster movie of some description in sync with each other and post about it. All are welcome! Look to the #MonsterdonAlert tag if you want to see annoucements about upcoming movies, and check #MonsterdonBingo for community bingo cards.
I will pin this post to my profile when I am participating in the event. If you do not want to see these posts, mute the tag and/or me!
Also got some fairly nice footage in the early evening. 2K recording mode looks much better with more light, plates are easily identifiable/etc. This is also handlebar mounted instead of helmet mounted.
These grade-separated lanes on Tremont St. are fairly recent construction, and they are wonderful. Note the raised pedestrian crossings, too! It works to calm bikes just as well as cars.
