Planantir's Karp joins AI panic. Note the cold language: "The ability of software to facilitate the elimination of an enemy is a precondition for its value to the defense and intelligence agencies with which we work. At Palantir, we are fortunate that our interests as a company and those of the country in which we are based are fundamentally aligned."

@jeffjarvis Elimination of an enemy is certainly a valuable property for a weapon, however I think making sure it doesn't eliminate you as well is at least as important.

We need a time travel movie where all the the time travelers die because they end up in the vast emptiness of space because the earth isn’t yet in, or has already left, our current location.

StarkRG,

@MissingThePt What reference frame are you using to determine Earth's location? The Sun? The galaxy? The Local Group? The Virgo Supercluster? Laniakea Supercluster? The cosmic microwave background? All of these things are moving in relation to each other and none of them are THE universal reference frame because such a thing doesn't exist.

Does advertising absolutely have to be quite so autism-unfriendly? Like, sure, I get it, advertising is a thing that has to happen, but why the hell does it have to be such an assault on every sense they have access to? If they had the ability to produce odours, I guarantee we'd end up with ads that smell like a cross between a waste treatment plant, an abbotoir, and a grand battle between warring states of sentient skunks with an undertone of vanilla cake.

    @yerald I think Paramount might be done with Star Trek, they've kept the ones worth more universal appeal, but I won't be surprised when they're cancelled at the end of their current runs.

    @QasimRashid There needs to be something like a wealth cap tax where all income is taxed at 100% if your total wealth exceeds some threshold. You can certainly have more money than the threshold, but, if you do, you can't make any more. Once your wealth is below the threshold, income is taxed progressively, as normal.

    I know that a lot of people have no idea where food comes from or don’t have relationship with food other than it comes from groceries/restaurant/mother/wife. This. This is wild.

    StarkRG,
    @StarkRG@myside-yourside.net avatar

    @jimfl @xgebi I'm not sure if you're aware of this, but there is no yeast found in most beer, it's all filtered out (except in unfiltered beer, but you're still unlikely to find much there either). It's true that yeast is involved in the process of making beer, but even when it isn't filtered out, it is not a significant ingredient in the end product. Beer is grain-based.

    Wine also uses yeast but I don't think you'll find anyone who would refer to it as anything other than grape-based.

    StarkRG,
    @StarkRG@myside-yourside.net avatar

    @jimfl @xgebi Oh, I see, you're purposefully being overly pedantic to the point of being wrong. Gotcha.

    Patrickstewart, to bluesky

    Interesting that lets you now use a custom domain as your handle. So that would be like, my account still sits on universeodon, but everyone sees it as patrickstewart@thetaoistonline.org? Hmm... so I get my own domain name with out having to host my own server? I think that's how it's working. Very interesting feature.

    StarkRG,
    @StarkRG@myside-yourside.net avatar

    @Patrickstewart Sounds like you'd need a dedicated domain pointed to them otherwise I can't see how else another server would be able to find you. For example, if you're on a server that doesn't know about mine at all, you put @StarkRG into your server's search box and it contacts my server at myside-yourside.net in order to find out about the account. You could, theoretically, run multiple instances on the same hardware with different domains pointed at them.

    Alito and Thomas just invent cases to drive their bigoted decisions, no doubt funded by dark money.

    Colorado web designer told Supreme Court a man sought her services for his same-sex wedding. He says he didn’t – and he’s straight

    Again, the man named in the 303 case never asked for a website, and he’s straight and married to a woman. This court has a legitimacy crisis.

    https://www.cnn.com/2023/06/30/politics/colorado-web-designer-court-filings/index.html

    StarkRG,
    @StarkRG@myside-yourside.net avatar

    @skykiss the US Supreme Court hasn't been legitimate for several years. I know the other branches of the federal government continue to pretend like it is, which, I guess, gives it a kind of defacto legitimacy, but the rules and agreements that give it legitimacy have not been followed when appointing justices. Really, I think the fact that the other branches continue to support a corrupt and illegitimate branch only shows that they're at least as compromised.

    StarkRG,
    @StarkRG@myside-yourside.net avatar

    @shayz0rz @StillIRise1963 I've suggested that the US should adopt compulsory voting when people have complained about how low voter turnout is, but for some reason the same people that complain then suggest it violates freedom. Which is a stupid argument because I fail to see how it's any different than requiring that people attend jury duty, except being chosen for jury duty lasts at least a full day (assuming you're not unlucky enough to be assigned to a complex case).
