I just had a shower. Raking the buxus bushes and then shooting water at them, all the while during a heavy thundery rainstorm. Just to get the damn moths out of them. I hope I drowned them all!

Wow, even more Google layoffs, this time in core infrastructure. I gotta admit I am, at this point, truly impressed with how breathtakingly arrogant and incompetent the upper levels of management are. I mean, this is some near world record levels of stupid โ€” layoffs are a known bad idea, but perpetual rolling layoffs? Seriously?

Liz and I looked into living in the USA for some time. After 3 years in a row visiting the USA a few times per year, visiting many states, we decided that if we would, it would be in Oregon.

But we decided no, hell no, absolutely not, not in the USA. Because healthcare. Police with too many powers (including taking all your belongings and not giving them back). Harsh criminal system, too many people in jail. Too many homeless. Too many guns. Too much transphobia.

And when the conference is over, it is not even over, because clearing and cleaning, admin stuff, bills, blogs, pictures, videos to put online, etc etc...

Making headlines and clickbait again: Trump warns NATO allies to meet NATO's defense spending targets. If not, he would encourage Russia to attack and invade such a country.

@lizmat and I have been domain registrars for 30 years this year. Last year we stopped being an official .nl domain registrar, and outsourced it. SIDN (Stichting Internet Domeinregistratie Nederland = Foundation Domain Registry NLD) became ridiculously expensive, but mostly they made new bureaucratic rules, and developed new stupid software systems that were increasingly difficult to use.

And now they just oursource it to Amazon. It's like we told Russia "do our gas".

Years ago I attended up to 19 conferences and workshops per year (Perl, FOSDEM, OSCON, T-DOSE, etc).

I met a lot of people. Somehow, many of those remember my name. Likewise, I forget theirs, and their face. Facebook and Mastodon help me to recognise their name and face.

Running gag at quite a lot of those meetings: at the bar, suddenly a whisky is placed in front of me. I look up, questioning why who what?

Laughter. "Wendy, you forgot us again, just like last year, same place, same time."

I think we have a new depiction of loneliness: a somewhat nearby galaxy of just gas, no stars, no stars being formed, no distinguishable objects, not visible in "regular" light, no near neighbours, untouched since the beginning of time.

J0613+52 is some 270 million lightyears away from us. It is discovered by accident. Sofar, it is the only one of its type.

The Netherlands just had elections, and the PVV ("Party for Freedom", with their leader Geert Wilders) is now the largest party in Dutch parliament, with 37 seats. Wilders wants The Netherlands out of the EU, out of NATO, out of the climate accords (like Paris), and close the borders.

So, while you are imagining how NATO is without the USA, also imagine how it is without the USA and without The Netherlands.

It made me sad to just write this. I am a big fan of EU and NATO.

Russia and "family values": the international lgbtq+ community is designated "extremist organisation", and any and all lgbtq+-person can be convicted for destroying family values, extremism, vulgarity, whatever.

Meanwhile, divorce rates are high in Russia: each year, 3.9 per 1,000 marriages end in divorce. Belarus 3.7. Ukraine 2.9.

The Netherlands, bastion of vulgar extremist lgbtq+-ism, has a divorce rate of 1.5 per 1,000.
