If you got upset at me for pointing out that more people died of Covid under Biden than Trump, in large part because Biden rolled back common sense restrictions that were in place under Trump...

Then you'll hate me pointing out that Trump introduced a 25% tariff on Chinese EVs, and Biden is upping that to 100% tariff.

@mekkaokereke I saw a Cybertruck in person a few weeks ago. From the exterior- one of the most poorly manufactured vehicles I have ever seen in my life. Nothing in its form aligns, clear gaps between sides and the hood. I’ve seen 1990 Suzukis with better quality.

I hope Biden gives an ultimatum - “you have 3 years to catch up, then I can’t stop bringing EVs to the masses.”

Again for people (racists), complaining about falling birth rates:

The birth rate for women over 40 is not falling. The birth rate for women over 30 is not falling.

What's happening, is girls 15 to 17 are having fewer babies. Kids are having fewer kids.

Also, this is an interesting way of saying that "Teen pregnancy is down, due to sex education and contraception."

In 1991 25% of 15 year olds gave birth before they turned 21. That's bad. Now it's 6%. That's better.

@mekkaokereke affordable childcare requires paid parental leave:

  1. Daycares compete with unpaid labor of parents (mostly women). Most staff (also women) are paid poverty wages.
  2. Infant care is a loss leader. Staff/child ratios make profits impossible - business makes up the loss in the 3/preK years.

Give parents a year to take care of their kids, and running a daycare becomes a more reasonable enterprise.

Trump filed his reply in the immunity issue in the Supreme Court.

It's so bad it is embarrassing. It is exactly how not to write a legal document.

To review: The issue now is simply whether the Supreme Court will put the trial DC-J6 trial hold while it considers whether to grant cert (hear his appeal.)

    Ordinarily the order is this:

💠 Person loses and files a writ for certiorari (which means asking SCOTUS to hear the appeal.
💠 SCOTUS decides whether to hear the case.

NBA basketball player Michael Porter Jr says that women's basketball players shouldn't get paid nearly what men make, because they don't have as many fans, and aren't "packing out arenas" like men are.

Look. I'm not even mad. I don't think he's wrong about player pay should be tied to league revenue, which is tied to in person attendance, online, and TV viewership.

I'm not mad. I just know that he hasn't looked at his NBA champ Denver Nugget average game viewership, compared to Caitlin Clark.😬

Let me explain DEI this way.

What if the fastest 100m high school track athlete in US history (9.98) was a skinny white kid? Would your system even find him? Or is the system set up to just default to Black track athletes only?

    https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=ejoAhVDhA5w

What if the fastest 60m split in track and field history (6.29) was a short Asian man? Would your system find him? Or would the assumption be that only Black guys can run the 60 m fast?

    https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=1Fen5mbnh_k

    adambkaplan,
    @adambkaplan@hachyderm.io avatar

@mekkaokereke this is such a good analogy! And it works the higher up the chain you go.

“John has an outsized presence in practice and on the bench, even though he doesn’t get a lot of playing time. Let’s hire him as an assistant coach once he graduates.”

    Etc.

🤷🏿‍♂️Another day of watching dudes online that know next to nothing about DEI, talk amongst themselves about what they think DEI is, and how they think it works.

It's like watching a conversation about hockey by people that have never seen it.

🤽🏻‍♂️The thing I hate most about hockey, is that instead of a ball, they play with a small turtle! Cruelty! End hockey!

🏒Um.. no we don't? We use a puck.

    🤽🏻‍♂️What's a puck?

🏒Um... Have you ever seen a hockey game? Do you even know any hockey players?

    🤽🏻‍♂️No, why?

    https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=qqp-tAoYo6k

Let's talk about that. Tyler Goodson isn't paid millions of dollars. Let's take a look at his contract vs his career earnings. His career earnings so far across 3 years of college and 2 years in the NFL, is $360K.

    $70K/yr

@mekkaokereke you know this, but I’m echoing as a former college athlete. D1 athletic programs make it exceptionally difficult to major in a natural science.

Need to miss practice for lab work? Bye bye “scholarship” and playing time.

    adambkaplan,
    @adambkaplan@hachyderm.io avatar

@mekkaokereke this is part of the reason I swam for a D3 program with stringent practice time controls (NESCAC school). 20 hours of official practice time max while class was in session. No official practice until Nov 1 - October 1 or 15 is more the norm in D3.

And my coach was especially accommodating to science majors who had 3 hour afternoon lab sessions weekly.

What are some examples of positive, non-stereotyped portrayal of nerds or smart protagonists on television and in film? I'm thinking of Malcolm in the Middle, Prison Break, and maybe the Ross arc on Friends (except it has held up poorly) - what else?

Coming to think of it, these are all male nerds, not female ones. Chloe on 24 is portrayed sympathetically, but is a supporting character.

    Happy #BlackHistoryMonth !

I'm still not talking about Black history. I'm still talking about white US history.

Q: Why do Black kids not do well in school? Is it because their dads are uninvolved and uncaring parents? Bill Cosby and Herschel Walker told me that, and they are good and wise men that we should listen to! It's Black dads' fault! Boo Black men!

A: No. Black kids only do poorly in school in extremely racist countries.

@mekkaokereke there was only one Black teacher in my entire school district growing up, which still is 85% White because of racist zoning laws (New York). No shocker that the former mayor of my hometown - now county executive - helped kill Hochul’s housing reform plan.

He got in trouble once for staging a reenactment of the “seating arrangements” of slave trade ships with my 7th grade history class.
