I left my Diaspora server for three months, and when I come back, it's full of racists and anti-vaxx conspiracy theorists.

Decentralization is not a magic serum that fixes social media.

It's just one tool.

Tokodon is a Mastodon for Linux that's been gaining fanfare. It's excellent for managing multiple accounts.

I had no idea Tokodon was made by the official KDE team.

It looks beautiful -- even if the UI is a tad text heavy.

Personally, I like text. It lets you know exactly what you're doing. Too much abstraction through icons does not make good usability.

Even when Elon Musk has an alt account, he can be quite a Karen about it.

Look at the rise and fall of !

This is why centralization of social media is such a bad idea.

BeReal is but one node. If it cannot sustain critical mass, it crashes and burns.

Meanwhile, every node that operates on the Fediverse shares the network effect!

No one company, institution, or service owns the ActivityPub protocol.

Bluesky vs. Mastodon is not as black and white as many seem to think.

Let me explain why. 🧵

  1. A Twitter founder funds and advises Bluesky.

Okay, a Twitter founder (@ev) runs a for-profit instance, and another (@biz) has offered to advise Mastodon.

  1. Bluesky accepted VC money.

A VC firm owns 3 of the top 5 largest Mastodon servers

  1. An evil corporation (Twitter) helped develop Bluesky.

An evil corporation (Google) helped develop the Fediverse

I have further thoughts here...

If social media protocols were people:

ActivityPub = College kid who’s sick and tired of putting up with your shit

AT protocol = People magazine-reading teen who can’t stop talking about ass

Nostr = Coked-out Amway salesman who really needs you on his inside team

Zot = Sean Connery as a Brutal

Diaspora = Old man who never leaves the house

Email = Respectable CEO who suddenly talks about dick pills

Finger = Squatter who lives in an abandon mansion, and who’s seen some things

is finally testing federation with "allow-listed servers".

They're finally taking the step of decentralization.

Many people will naysay this. But it's absolutely better that they move to decentralization than not do it.

Every day is a new day that people on Mastodon discover that federation works.

The Fediverse isn’t the only form of decentralized social media that exists.

There’s also the Relayverse, of which Nostr is prominent.

In many ways, the Relayverse is a mirror universe of the Fediverse.

People there get very angry if you’re not into crypto.

Oh, what’s this? Twitter’s changing their mind?

They’re giving free API access to verified government and “publicly owned” services?

Hmmm… I wonder if it’s because no one paid their outrageous fees.

I created a new Fediverse group: @socialmedianews

This is for sharing news about the general social media industry with an especial focus on Meta, Twitter, TikTok, Reddit, etc. -- what I often affectionately call "Big Social".

The Fediverse will not be a focus for this group. To share news related to the Fediverse, tag @fediversenews instead.

Since last December, I've noticed that Fediverse groups have been popular -- and I hope to continue this success with @socialmedianews

Have fun!

Well, just confirmed that bans on @fediversenews work as they should.

A troll just tried to post here.

Their troll post doesn't display on @fediversenews, nor is their post boosted by the Group.

Even better, they're not notified when they are blocked 😉

Until comment controls come to Friendica, moderation here will mostly have to be reactive.

I will continue using venera.social for groups until a better solution comes along.

Relatica, a Friendica iOS client made by @hankg, has made significant progress!

The UI is a lot smoother. The timeline looks great too.

This is still in beta, and not available on the App Store yet—but I’m excited about this!

Elon Musk is trying to pivot to video.

If you post videos, they will be privileged by the algorithm.

Like the rest of Big Social, Twitter wants to become TikTok.

If you're trying to sign up for https://calckey.social, you may have noticed there's a notice saying that registrations are disabled above the registration form. This notice is not accurate.

It is actually a bug, and I've filed it as one in the repo:

https://codeberg.org/calckey/calckey/issues/10033

If you want to join https://calckey.social, ignore that notice and continue with your registration.

Here's a screenshot of the bug in question.

To everyone DMing me to ask for calckey.social invitation codes: I’m not giving them out.

You’re probably really cool. Typically, I’d welcome you with open arms.

But right now, calckey.social needs to take a breather.

Here’s other servers you can join, though:

Mastodon’s growth trajectory is one of scalloped growth, not exponential growth.

I’ve observed this same phenomena, but @hildabast presents it so much better in this good data-driven assessment of Mastodon’s growth!

We can’t be exact about Mastodon’s growth, but we can observe key trends.
