I do believe more users should use there’s a lot that the team and users in general can learn from those in the and clear up misconceptions

atomicpoet,
@atomicpoet@mastodon.social avatar

@mekkaokereke @supernovae @damonoutlaw Once again, you have excellent insights. There’s a few things I wonder about, though:

  1. What will happen if Bluesky is impermanent, as Jack Dorsey hopes it will be?

  2. What will happen once federation occurs with Bluesky, and we start seeing the same HOA problems that are occurring on the rest of the Fediverse?

At that moment, Bluesky can’t control things—and they don’t even want to.

atomicpoet,
@atomicpoet@mastodon.social avatar

@mekkaokereke @supernovae @damonoutlaw For what it’s worth, it seems that folks on Bluesky are becoming more and more excited about decentralization. Which makes me happy. This is absolutely the way social media should go.

But there will be an unavoidable price. And that is communities will need to arise to do the moderating. And these moderators will probably be volunteers.

atomicpoet,
@atomicpoet@mastodon.social avatar

@supernovae @mekkaokereke @damonoutlaw This is true too, and I’ve noted that. But nevertheless, I’m having more conversations with people about decentralization, where Bluesky says they want to go, and the whole ecosystem that exists outside Bluesky.

Less people are hostile now than they were a few weeks ago.

atomicpoet,
@atomicpoet@mastodon.social avatar

@supernovae @mekkaokereke @damonoutlaw Yep, and the problem is that some people became religious about certain cultural practices, and that ended up with the HOA aspect Mekka alludes to.

For 8 years, Mastodon (mostly) had a culture that created a safe haven for certain marginalized groups.

Then in November 2022, that culture tried to enforce the rules and they suddenly no longer applied.

Even worse, the rules proved oppressive.

This is dramatic!

https://misskey.io is 4 users away from overtaking https://mastodon.online as the 6th largest server on the Fediverse!

At least according to FediDB:

@fediversenews

atomicpoet,
@atomicpoet@mastodon.social avatar

@darnell @fediversenews That's pretty interesting. I know FediDB removes pawoo. And I don't think joindiaspora.com should be counted. It's reached end of life.

atomicpoet,
@atomicpoet@mastodon.social avatar

@darnell @fediversenews Yeah, maybe we should mention that to @dansup. Baraag should probably be de-listed too.

atomicpoet,
@atomicpoet@mastodon.social avatar

@dansup @darnell @fediversenews Once again, Dan, you're a champ.

Interesting observation about social media “fun”:

Some people think is “fun”. However, I find it anxiety-inducing and stressful. I’m not the only one who thinks so. A few autistic people say the same thing.

seems “fun” to me because I can make it be what I need it to be. For example, it’s nice that I can create antennas devoted to my special interests.

@ConserveChange @pussista @fediversenews Then why is Discord so popular?

How the hell have *key apps been so under the radar for 9 years?!

(At least here in the West.)

atomicpoet,
@atomicpoet@mastodon.social avatar

@renwillis @Bigou Misskey is older than Mastodon, not Calckey.

Calckey is a fork of Misskey and it’s in active development. So yes, it is more experimental and there’s lots of bugs.

atomicpoet, to internet
@atomicpoet@mastodon.social avatar

Hey @gruber, how will be tangibly different from Mastodon?

Because with what Bluesky devs are telling me, defederation with AT protocol should be possible.

It would be incredible on Bluesky’s part if a server couldn’t defederate.

atomicpoet,
@atomicpoet@mastodon.social avatar

Seriously, what’s with the doomerism on @gruber’s part?

Apparently, everything is “doomed” if things don’t follow his precise prescription for how things should be.

I, myself, criticize Mastodon. Quite often, in fact. But calling it “doomed”? That’s a stretch.

I just embedded a search engine into a post.

How did I do that?

By typing the following line into a post:

Here's a feature comparison of Calckey and Mastodon.

This handy chart not only compares Calckey with Mastodon, but all the well-known Fediverse microblogging software with each other.

But a chart can only tell you so much. If you really want to know what makes Calckey different from Mastodon, you have to try it.

If you want to know more about Calckey, visit this site:

@atomicpoet@mastodon.social avatar

engineer Jake Gold confirmed to me that a PDS can opt out of BGS indexing.

Which also tells me that AT protocol (and Bluesky) will allow defederation.

So there you have it, @gruber.

If you use AT protocol, you will be able to defederate from other servers for both petulant and non-petulant reasons.

Mastodon is terrible because it’s hard to join—unlike , a social network that is hard to join, which is great.

Well, just confirmed that bans on @fediversenews work as they should.

A troll just tried to post here.

Their troll post doesn't display on @fediversenews, nor is their post boosted by the Group.

Even better, they're not notified when they are blocked 😉

Until comment controls come to Friendica, moderation here will mostly have to be reactive.

I will continue using venera.social for groups until a better solution comes along.

Just a reminder that @fediversenews is not a “headless boost bot”.

It’s a Fediverse group hosted on a Friendica server, specifically venera.social.

If you’re unaware of what this group actually looks like, please visit this URL:

https://venera.social/profile/fediversenews

Please don’t use this as a boosting service for Mastodon or you’ll be banned.

atomicpoet, to random
@atomicpoet@mastodon.social avatar

Nostr is definitely not easier to use than the Fediverse.

If you think picking a server is hard, try saving a public and private key—and then using those keys when using a different client.

atomicpoet,
@atomicpoet@mastodon.social avatar

@osma Until I see an active Bluesky server in the wild, I consider it vaporware.

atomicpoet, to fediverse
@atomicpoet@mastodon.social avatar

It’s okay to stick with Mastodon.

is just a different way to be on the Fediverse.

Ultimately, Mastodon and Calckey can still talk to each other through .

Think of all the social media software that doesn’t allow conversation outside its walled garden!

@atomicpoet@mastodon.social avatar

REMINDER: If you see abuse, don’t boost it. Report it instead.

Boosting creates more reach for the initial abuse, which makes it all the more worse.

Also, please give moderators a chance to respond to reports. During times you’re active on the Fediverse, some of us are literally sleeping 😴

@doug This is one reason CW are being brought to quotes, at least with Calckey.
