Fediverse! I’ve been building a bridge to Bluesky, and they’re turning on federation soon, which means my bridge will be available soon too. You’ll be able to follow people on Bluesky from here in the fediverse, and vice versa.

Bluesky is a broad network with lots of worthwhile people and conversations! I hope you’ll give it a chance. Only fully public content is bridged, not followers-only or otherwise private posts or profiles. Still, if you want to opt out, I understand. Feel free to DM me at @snarfed (different account than this one), email me, file a GitHub issue, or put #nobridge in your profile bio.

A number of us have thought about this for a while now, we’re committed to making it work well for everyone, and we’re very open to feedback. Thanks for listening. Feel free to share broadly.

I think people are missing something with Bluesky's "consumer choice" model of moderation. A lot of harmful content has harm beyond you seeing it. 1/

I hear some people saying that, because of the new thing growing rapidly, Mastodon may not grow as fast. Which is... Exactly the point? I need a nice place with human beings to interact with. My mind does not feel ready to fall again into the old rage-bait cycle. The other city already had issues before zombies came. I do not want a prequel. I want something new and better.

codinghorror, to random

It's strange, but I feel the overarching lesson of Twitter was "how snarkily funny can I be" whereas on Mastodon it's "how kind and generous can I be" and good lord I am so here for this change, even if it results in less clickbait and "engagement"

berniethewordsmith,
@berniethewordsmith@masto.es avatar

@codinghorror Hundred percent. I do not want "the same place but before zombies came". I want a new one, a better one.

Old blogpost bamp:

is cosplaying decentralization
https://rys.io/en/167.html

> BlueSky’s decentralization is a similar kind as with cryptocurrencies: sure, you can run your own node, but that does not give you basically any meaningful agency in the system.

> “Neutrality” and “speech” and “voice” and “protection from bans” is mentioned right there, front and center, in BlueSky’s overview and FAQ. At the same time moderation and anti-harassment features are, at best, an afterthought.

@rysiek This is why I am reluctant with Blue sky. Although anything that helps tanking Space Karen's Bullshit place is welcome, Im wondering if Bluesky is yet another network to be enshittified

For those of you that are often in , I am genuinely curious about something. Are the moderation tools better than the ones in Fedi? I still prefer the networks based in , but I was wondering if systems like Bluesky can be more attractive for people with a larger audience or issues with online harassment

think the weather settled the fuck down because my migraine went away and i suddenly had enough energy and presence of mind to add a new move to a kitsune tails character, pixel a whole new entity with 24 frames of animation, implement it in code, and get all the relevant files to our mapper so she can use it in maps

No tardaron en fugarse de la oficina del Inem en la que estaban recluidos. Hoy, todavía buscados por las agencias, sobreviven como escritores de fortuna. Second Hunger Games movie down. It was... okay I guess? Felt messy and like I spent 2 and a half hours watching a set up for the movie I'd hoped to be watching instead

Also movie, did you really deny me the Haymitch team up in order to do the Peeta thing again? I wasn't stoked the first time around and it did not land better the second go around

It is about time for and @Gargron to implement local-only functions. Instance admins need to protect their users properly before a behemoth of hundreds of millions of users like lands here

berniethewordsmith,
@berniethewordsmith@masto.es avatar

For reason number 2: I thought we were out of this kind of thing already. It is ok for a piece of software and for its creators to have a core philosophy. But philosophy also evolves with the times. We know local-only options are not only possible, but they exist already in some forks like Glitch-Soc and other pieces of software (will update this post with them).

berniethewordsmith,
@berniethewordsmith@masto.es avatar

For a community to have full powers as such, they must be able to close their doors in times of tribulation. Local-only posts are just that: people asking if they can have doors.

berniethewordsmith,
@berniethewordsmith@masto.es avatar

Yes, I know a barbarian can break a wooden door, I am a Dungeon Master. But we still need doors.

berniethewordsmith,
@berniethewordsmith@masto.es avatar

Regarding reason number 3: increased complexity on the settings. Again, weren't we out of this already. I cannot think of a more complex process for the average user than moving to another Instance. The sole existence of the migration process can deactivate, in my opinion, this third argument. We want software to give us the tools. We can definitely make the tools more fancy or evangelize about them. Again, this is me channeling my inner dungeon master: give us doors, and we will explain about barbarians with axes to our families.

berniethewordsmith,
@berniethewordsmith@masto.es avatar

We need local-only posts in . People wiser, smarter than me, are saying it. I'm just a monkey typing on a smartphone, but others have better arguments and also already CODED this function. It is time to listen to them.

berniethewordsmith,
@berniethewordsmith@masto.es avatar

And again, feel free to beat common sense into me if you think I'm missing something important.

berniethewordsmith,
@berniethewordsmith@masto.es avatar

@redegelde @Gargron That's the fun thing, It is already implemented in a lot of places. I've seen things like a button, the use of the eye emoji 👁️ in a post to trigger it... I'm not going to be picky about the form of the door... I just need a door 😂
