One of the sessions yesterday at the #FediForum focused on CSAM, quite a tough topic.
If you host your own instance, even if it's just YOU on that instance, you need to read this and consider taking action to protect yourself and your moderation team.
Kudos to @thisismissem and @iftas for exploring new ways to manage this without scarring moderators for life.
@box464@iftas so to be very clear: if it's just you on that instance, and you disable viewing the instance timeline when logged out, and you use a domain block list, your liability will be extremely limited — it'd take someone you follow posting CSAM to create liability.
And then you can quickly report & suspend that person; the origin instance has the majority of the responsibility here, deleting the cached copy is likely to be enough
It would likely not be possible for Mastodon gGmbH to process media that is potentially CSAM and hold it for law enforcement, due to the CSAM laws in Germany, where possession is strictly illegal, even for the purposes of reporting to law enforcement.
Calckey offers an interesting feature that I wish Mastodon apps included - the ability to view from what PLATFORM an account comes from. It's missing one thing, which is a clickable link that would take you to the official site of each platform to check it out. I think the beta API from FediDB might be able to assist with that.
Would love to see this in more apps, regardless of platform. Gives casual users a chance to check out other pockets of the fediverse out there.
@tost@TransGal4872@box464 hm, I def had an account on mkabs like a couple months ago. I do remember the software name in the ticker presented at the left, but I don't remember it showing on hover... guess it's just a coincidence 🤷
@tchambers You’re onto something there. Of course legacy blue checks are gone now ( or just hidden in code ), but even for just “how do I get verified”, a hand holding walk through would be helpful.
So it looks like I will begin a journey into #Salesforce and ultimately #SalesforceDev. Any tips for a small dev crew with a #DotNet background starting up? Licensing / usage gotchas also welcome.
@box464 Yeah. We kept our usage super low quite easily. But your client will keep adding other stuff from the marketplace that uses it up, so you'll end up on the hook for their over-enthusiasm :)
Definitely plan for how your app will gracefully handle the situation where the limits are gone.
@box464 If your company is going to run an org (as opposed to you being an ISV), know that the license structure is confusing on purpose.
Also know that license prices are highly subject to negotiation. I’d say that per every 100 full license users, I’d aim for a $50 drop in license price, and for every 50 platform users, I’d aim for a $10 license price drop. These numbers are based on Sales/Service cloud usage.
Mastodon certainly has a lot of creative, unique apps. You can definitely find a fit just for you.
But I think the #Threadiverse is having it's own golden era right now with a plethora of choices for us finicky #Fediverse users. The best list I could find for #Lemmy is attached, but it's still missing a few newcomers, like @bean
Nothing near as comprehensive for #kbin yet (the API is still getting it's legs) but there is the amazing @ArtemisApp
I used #kbin & #lemmy for a couple days on a measured rate internet connection and it sucked ~2gb of my credit (half my credit for a month). Yikes. I don’t know which one did the damage but I suspect kbin since I had images disabled on the browser I used for lemmy. I guess I’ll have to step away from the #threadiverse until I find a text-based linux app for one of them.
😬 I see the truly good intentions here, but...it feels similar to all the CW and ALT text replies - but coming from the official mastodon organization itself.
It was noted in the replies that Twitter and Facebook already have similar feature sets.
You can dismiss the warnings after you see it for the first time, which is good.
Here we go. First time attempting to use #Linux as a daily personal driver. Let's see what happens. Install was simple. Getting Firefox Developer Edition wasn't as easy as I'd hoped, but doable. #popos
@ahoyboyhoy For me it's the additional CSS tools and validators that don't exist in the regular Firefox version. I'm horrible with CSS and it helps me debug faster than a save + refresh.
@box464 maybe I'll have to see what I'm missing. The developer tools that ship standard have always worked well for me. I only used the developer edition years ago on macOS to just allow for a third browser environment.
Completely different way of looking at the fediverse. We were using #dogs and #cats long before Mastodon existed.
Since I have restricted (connections only) search permissions enabled and Mastodon doesn't support OpenWebAuth you'll need to do a signed ActivityPub fetch to find any results at that endpoint; but I assure you it works.
We need ActivityPub platforms that go beyond core social media concepts. @bonfire is exploring modular extensions and access control as building blocks for creative ideas.
Here's my guide to the install process on my little homelab system.
@box464 awesome guide 👏 One small possible tweak: the Co-op Cloud install method doesn't need an entire domain (our "DNS setup" docs you linked to probably could be clearer/more correct) – setting it up with vps.example.com and bonfire.example.com works fine; it even works using an IP address instead of a hostname for the server.
@coopcloud@picard That's generous of you. Consider it a bonus round if there's time left, but don't put pressure on yourself at the last minute. Looks like you have your practice run all setup with some great apps already. I'm going to try and be there!
I think my next Home Lab experiment will be installing some kind of music library manager. I have Plex already and tried using that a few years ago, but it wasn't exactly my cup of tea for music.
My library is large. Over 25 years of collected music in MP3/MP4 format.
@bryanruby I did it ages ago (when my pc still had a CD drive) but then lost them to a drive failure. Recently I found quite a few that had been scooped up by Google Music at some point - they sent me an email to download them before the service ended. Backing up to the cloud and a USB drive now!
I’d like to delete all my tweets en masse. There’s not many. Is there an open source option to do so? These “delete my tweets” platforms all look sketchy to me.
Settings > Privacy and safety Discoverability and contacts
Under manage contacts, I must have let twitter connect to my address book. It has phone and emails of family and friends! I chose the option to "Remove all contacts", but it says it may take awhile.
Content you see
Optional, but here was a list of items twitter thinks I'm interested in. I removed them, one by one.
I checked this morning and "Remove all contacts" completed.
Finding your Twitter Follows in the Fediverse Or elsewhere
In the meantime, I also found a way to export a lot of data about the people I follow so I can attempt to find them on other platforms.
Fedifinder, an app that scans your Twitter follows for fediverse account links, still works! It's added support for Bluesky. Still a lot of missing accounts but this gives me a start.
