Happened to be near a Best Buy that had a reMarkable 2 on display, and it seems nice, but do I need this? It seems like it would have been absolutely amazing for university when we ahem obtained pdf textbooks and this would have allowed me to carry all of them and annotate them.
I don’t know what I’d actually do with it. But I love the aesthetics of it and handwriting notes is a big part of how I do things when I function - so maybe it would be really awesome?

Have you thought at all, for even a minute, about the business model of OpenAI?

In one sentence: "We will take every actual human-created content, the golden egg, from everyone, without permission, and then we will use it to sell plausible made-up shit, simultaneously choking out the creation of all new human-created content, the goose."

Ponzi was vastly more sophisticated than this.

I've long regarded extractive capitalism as corrupt, but I had no idea they were all so stupid.

@hazelweakly @GeePawHill apologists and evangelists keep saying things about emergent properties, but you’re starting with what is - to a first approximation - the sum total of human knowledge in the English language and you get… something that can do a passable shitpost poem about version control or spit out marketing drivel? Yes, that’s more than is obvious from the linear algebra and weights, but look where you started!

Sometimes a "wandering trader" come up to you in Minecraft and it's very annoying since he has llamas that make noise and can get in the way. Most players just kill him.

It would be nice if Minecraft added a "goodbye" button that would cause him to leave. Or even a "go away button"

All the murder is both funny and it does not sit well with me.

Idle, delayed realization: transitioning to thinking of energy as unlimited/renewable and material as the limiting factor will require a serious change for petroleum refineries. Like, their whole operation uses material (crude oil) as both energy source and raw material for product. From the economic of a refinery owner, buying a whole lot of electricity to heat the fractionating column and cracking and reforming reactors instead of burning crude is just not going to be attractive.

I hate my work laptop so much. I SHALL NOT be made to use a Dell computer.
Issues today:

  • refused to use dock’s network card
  • refused to recognize the left monitor at all
  • had to power cycle the left monitor that’s directly connected to the dock to get it to be better than 800x600
  • dock providing insufficient power
Four times I had to unplug and reconnect the dock!

For rainy days we have a treadmill but it's locked into the vendor's subscription service if you want to watch videos.

Except...tap the bottom left 10 times, wait 7 seconds, tap 10 more times, up pops a number, use that as a seed to generate a number with lrand48, reduce modulo 999999 (not 1000000!) and type that number back in, and now you have an Android tablet with web browser and access to YouTube.

@dpiponi @tsrono moving safety-relevant car controls from physical things in their expected places to a touch screen is evil and should be outlawed. I learned how to drive a fairly generic car. That’s what I’m qualified on. It can be manual or automatic. It cannot have the fucking wipers controlled by a submenu on a touchscreen.

The least enjoyable part of coding is getting the IDE setup, the folders named, the correct libraries installed and trimmed down so they have what you think you will need.

If the language is java then the least enjoyable part is deciding if you want to store a number as a float or an int (formatted if you need decimals) ... then always changing your mind and having to go through and fix the numbers so they work.

I know python is lazy, but strict typing still feels like a drag to me.

@phryk integers and fixed point are faster generally and some hardware lacks native support for floating point types — yes, even now. Some ARM chips have a full barrel-shifter letting you bitshift (divide or multiply by a power of two) for free at the end of another operation, but only for integer types.

@dr2chase @futurebird @phryk “For values exactly halfway between rounded decimal values, NumPy rounds to the nearest even value. Thus 1.5 and 2.5 round to 2.0, -0.5 and 0.5 round to 0.0, etc.”
