To the extent that search engines know which content is created by generative AI, they should offer a search parameter to users that excludes all known AI-generated content in search results. Where possible, a sticky "never show me AI-generated content" option should also be available. #Google

@lauren Might be more productive to tag ?

@lauren More likely than trying to get a search engine that profits massively from "AI" to undercut itself though, no?

Anybody have some handy links on why exclusively in-person events are ableist, especially during a pandemic? I don't have the spoons to write or compile.

(Side note: I hate the "spoons" metaphor, but sometimes I don't have the spoons for the extra three syllables in "capacity," and today is one of those days.)

FORTUNE: Consumer prices pushed up mostly by corporate profits, new Groundwork Collaborative study finds

"Corporate profits drove 53% of inflation during the second and third quarters of 2023 and more than one-third since the start of the pandemic, the report found, analyzing Commerce Department data. That’s a massive jump from the four decades prior to the pandemic, when profits drove just 11% of price growth."

They're talking about grade inflation at the Ivies again. And OK, fair. Everyone gets an A. But can we also talk about educator inflation? Educator inflation is a good thing! By educator inflation I mean: the typical educator at a top tier university today, is miles better at educating, than the typical educator at that same institution 50 years ago.

The field of education is not static. There are constant advances in how material is presented, and how students are supported.

callisto,
@callisto@disabled.social avatar

@FantasticalEconomics @tob @mekkaokereke You can't inflate away competition. The metrics just change. Instead of competing for a B, now they're competing for an A++. Or maybe it's up to A+++ now, I can't keep track.

callisto,
@callisto@disabled.social avatar

@FantasticalEconomics @tob @mekkaokereke That's a great strategy, but I wouldn't call it "inflation." The economic metaphor "grade inflation" is based on, is a situation where the scale of measurement (units of currency) changes while the relative relationships between the costs of things mostly do not. Inflation doesn't mean a pencil costs the same as a car.

Maybe what you're doing could be called "conflation?"

"Heat pumps don't work in the cold"

Context: This is data from my mom and dad's new cold climate heat pump. While the system has been calling for heat continuously during this time, it has only needed to kick on the backup resistive heating in the deepest of cold, and even then only for a couple of hours overnight.

For those of you who speak metric, -13°F is -25°C, and their desired setpoint is 21°C

callisto,

@TechConnectify Is that software onboard the heat pump, or where does that image come from? I'd sure like to know about mine, just installed this fall, getting its first cold-weather workout this week.

Me: OMG. I wrote all my college papers on a Brother.

Other Colleague: What's a Brother?

Me: [staring in Old]

Colleague: The best electrical typewriter that had a ball and then it added a tiny screen --

Me: -- and you could edit! But only 5 words at a time. I loved my Brother.

Colleague: Well, I saw this ad for something pushing 'distraction free writing'. Just a keyboard and a tiny screen.

A friend of mine has recently been naming the expression on my face when I send him photos and it is always wrong.

I said I'm really bad at expressing emotion and he said "you're really good at expressing emotion on your face, we just need to work on your timing!"

callisto,

@alexisbushnell @actuallyautistic Except neither. Possibly you both need to work on double empathy. But if you know how to interpret NTs' facial expressions, then it's just that your friend needs to have a better idea of ND people's facial expressions.

How many of y'all are down to throw $1 at my 100% people funded campaign? ❤️✊🏽

A week ago we needed 1200 donors to hit goal.😳

With 12 hours left we need only 375 donors to hit goal.

Donate $1 Here: https://secure.actblue.com/donate/people-fund-qasim-for-congress

@QasimRashid Direct link so we don't give Musk the clicks on that shortened link:

I'd pretty much made the decision to focus my donations more locally this year (I'm in Ohio and we have some really critical races here), but in the spirit of knowing we're all connected, especially within a nation, sending a small donation your way (more than $1)

Remember how I posted that our car got totaled a couple weeks ago? We bought a new car partially with the insurance payout from that (well, still used, but by far the newest car we've ever owned). It's a plug-in hybrid, which is completely perfect for our rural living situation! I'm excited.

But WOW, it's the first car I've ever had that's not a beater, and it feels like driving a freaking spaceship. I think I'm going to actually have to sit down and read the owner's manual. Any tips?

callisto,
@callisto@disabled.social avatar

@sundogplanets Not what you asked, but as soon as you mentioned "rural living situation" I'm going to recommend these. I don't like to use kill traps, but living in the country with one car, I just can't wonder every day whether it will start or whether it'll yet again be another missed meeting, flatbed wrecker, thousands of $ in repairs, and a month with a rental that may not be able to handle my lane in winter. There's no lying under a modern car with a soldering iron. https://goodnature.co/

A dishwasher tip specifically for those of you in North America:

Your dishwasher expects to be filled with hot water. If it takes more than 15 seconds for the water at your kitchen tap to get hot, your dishwasher may be washing with cold water for much of its cycle.

If your dishwasher seems kinda meh, try running the kitchen tap until it's proper hot and steamy before you start a wash cycle. It may make a huge difference.

callisto,
@callisto@disabled.social avatar

@TechConnectify The dishwasher I bought last year in the USA does that automatically. Three purges of about 3-4 seconds each before it starts its initial fill. Is that a common feature now?

    We don’t have national healthcare but the US government still pays 41% of total national health care costs and that’s more than what they UK, France, Germany, Italy, Austria, and Spain combined pay to provide universal health care to all citizens. Profit-based health care is broken.
