Long lens shot down the road: a Pileated Woodpecker inspecting a wooden fence built from pines cut down a few years ago. Lots of holes/worms already in the wood.
Our local crow tried to chase him off but Woodpecker held his ground 💪 .

@NeadReport Thank you. Yes, this one kept moving around the fence post while keeping an eye on the crow who kept an eye on him 😂 .

The ice covering the beaver pond is thinning.
Fox tracks in the soft ice tell how little a fox weighs.

Sublimation: warm air that came in yesterday caused some snow to just evaporate.

How come I never noticed ?
The struggle was real: how to get this twig into the small hole of a nest box? House Wren was so eager to build a nest but she didn't like it and he had to build another one elsewhere.

Vast snowy landscape or mini moss?
Depends on the viewers size.

fabula murina (mouse story) XI
Tomorrow's an important day for the parvulus musculus (baby mouse) as it's his nominalia (naming day). The mice eum lavant (wash him) in a labrum (tub). Minima wields a sponge, while Minimus stands ready with a sudarium (towel) and a trulla (dipper).

@Minimus I really admire your detailed setups. There's so much thought in every scene you assemble to photograph.

One of my favourite lichen finds on exposed granite boulders: the Orange Rock Posy (Rhizoplaca chrysoleuca). A small patch of about 2 cm.

Our prettiest lichen, the Star-tipped Reindeer Lichen (Cladonia stellaris), was voted the top pick for National lichen of Canada.

When you put the wide angle lens on your camera you're practically guaranteed to see otters swimming close to you 🤨 . They were unhappy to see me but it likely saved the life of a small duck who took off before she saw the otters.
Heavily cropped.

Hair Ice coming up from the soil. There may have been wood hidden underneath. Wood-rotting fungi (Exidiopsis effusa) play a role in creating this delicate ice formation.
It doesn't last long, the sun melts it quickly.

It looked like algae growing on a wet log. Moving closer it resembled a slime mold 🧐 . On the computer screen it turned out to be a rather pretty fungus: Trichoderma gelatinosum.
They are widely studied for uses in agriculture, medicine, and industries, I learned.

A light in the dark: a Collybia (?) mushroom.
And it's a very dark day today. All the rain we should have received in October seems to be falling today.
Good for the ponds. But there will be flooding 😬 .

No chance of seeing it here tonight 😢 .

The micro world was colourful today: lichens with the pink fungus Illosporiopsis christiansenii that parasitizes some lichens.

My eyes could barely spot the Snowfleas aka Springtails (Hypogastrura nivicola), about 1.5 mm small.
On the computer, zooming, I saw rows of even smaller Fairy Pins (Phaeocalicium ?), a lichen. It looks like the Springtails feed on them.
All of this is happening on a little bracket mushroom about 3 cm across.
This tiny world boggles my mind.
Vertical photo.
