I didn't like that Apple crushing ad, either. I cringed.

I understand the conceit of the ad - cramming all of this stuff/capability into a single magical iPad - but the execution was in poor taste, IMO.

All I saw was wastefulness. It's one thing to run with the idea that someone can replicate all of those things they probably don't have using just this one device they could buy right now, but it's quite another to imply that all of it needed to be destroyed for the iPad to pop into existence.

We're back to my recurring nightmare of making it easy for a non-technical client to edit a static website generated using .

Are there any good solutions? Or am I going to end up writing my own solution after many painful hours with other people's janky solutions?

If you know of a non-technical user successfully editing a static website, how are they doing it?

EDIT: I'll only use open source solutions I can self-host, but happy to hear about proprietary options.

Not every day do you get to merge support for 130 tablets with one click but yesterday was one of those not everydays.

Markdown is great and is made even greater by a sleek editor like Apostrophe! Take notes and create documents with this distraction-free app. The program's special "Focus Mode" lets you start writing your next masterpiece one line at a time. It also supports all markdown syntax, with options to quickly add a placeholder link or table. Preview your rendered work, then export to a variety of formats!

You can get the app on Flathub here: https://flathub.org/apps/org.gnome.gitlab.somas.Apostrophe

Game devs: how do you manage merge conflicts in your projects? A colleague and I were both independently working on the same Godot project, stored in Git, and so we inevitably had a merge conflict when we each modified the same scene. The scene format is plain text so after a bit of trial & error I resolved the conflict. Are there better tools for this in industry? Or is the tool “don't edit scene X, I'm working on it”?

So, when I was growing up, students at my high school described the devil horns hand gesture—i.e. 🤟or 🤘, sometimes 🤙—using the word “boggs.” It was used essentially the entire time I was in school by most of the male student body, and I have no idea why they described it with this word. I have never heard it beyond my high school days.

Does anyone know why “boggs” was associated with this symbol?

Open source UX is often criticised. Some of it is justified, but what can we do about it? @scottjenson 's talk at this year's FOSS Backstage explored which repos are doing UX well and what we can learn from them.

When I dismiss my morning alarm, Android gives me a full-screen page with the weather forecast and stuff which animates into view in a frustratingly slow way. But the button to dismiss it… On the one hand, it's nice to see a hint of character peeking through the blandness. On the other hand, surely it should be either “OK, thanks” or “Okay, thanks”? No-one writes “Ok” in mixed case, and the comma is standard outside of informal writing. The character that peeks through is “idgaf”.

Shout out to everyone on Threads who makes it easier to follow their posts (and not just rely on the Threads angorithm being kind) by turning on fediverse sharing 🫡

Go to settings > Account, and turn it on.

No need to create a Mastodon account or anything, it’s literally one step and forget it.

The publisher of a small imprint of roleplaying games magazines/speculative fiction shuts down after 22 years because their submissions have been flooded with AI to the extent they cannot wade through them:

“The problem with AI is the people who use AI. These are people who think their ‘ideas’ are more important than the actual craft of writing, so they churn out all these ‘ideas’ and enter their idea prompts and think the output is a story.”

I cannot overstate how dangerous to free speech and a healthy democracy it is to redefine all anti-Zionism and criticism of the state of Israel as antisemitism. You know who's loudly critical of Zionism and the Israeli govt? Jews. A lot of Jews.
