A follow-up to my "Rabbit R1 is an Android app in a box" article:

In their attempted rebuttal, Rabbit made several misrepresentations of my findings - as well as of their own product.

I address their claims in my latest article for Android Authority: https://www.androidauthority.com/rabbit-r1-bespoke-android-3439760/

Question!.......I've been thinking of making some sun catchers. Does anyone want sun catchers or house decor beaded mobiles? They make a very unique decor for houses and gardens, and a wonderful gift. I can fit them with anyone's favourite colors and shapes too. They can be themed however you or your beloved person you'd like to gift would like!

The publisher of a small imprint of roleplaying games magazines/speculative fiction shuts down after 22 years because their submissions have been flooded with AI to the extent they cannot wade through them:

“The problem with AI is the people who use AI. These are people who think their ‘ideas’ are more important than the actual craft of writing, so they churn out all these ‘ideas’ and enter their idea prompts and think the output is a story.”

Helloo!

After years of people asking (no really some actually did!).
I have scanned a whole sketchbook and flung it up for those interested enough to purchase a 69 page pdf of badgeriness.

I cannot overstate how dangerous to free speech and a healthy democracy it is to redefine all anti-Zionism and criticism of the state of Israel as antisemitism. You know who's loudly critical of Zionism and the Israeli govt? Jews. A lot of Jews.

URGENT: Within hours, Congress will vote on legislation that criminalizes student protest under the guise of fighting antisemitism. Write your rep now and tell them to vote NO on this authoritarian campus crackdown.

GNOME will be mentoring 8 new contributors for Google Summer of Code 2024

We are happy to announce that GNOME was assigned eight slots for Google Summer of Code projects this year!

GSoC is a program focused on bringing new contributors into open source software development. A number of long term GNOME developers are former GSoC interns, making the program a very valuable entry point for new members in our project.

In 2024 we will mentoring the following projects:

Project Title Contributor Assigned Mentor(s)
Add TypeScript Support to Workbench Angelo Verlain Shema Sonny Piers
Port Workbench demos to Vala, build a new Workbench Library, and replace the current code search Bharat Tyagi Sonny Piers
Improve Tracker SPARQL developer experience by creating a “web IDE” for developing queries Demigod Carlos Garnacho
Papers’ small screen and touch support for mobile and tablet Markus Göllnitz Pablo Correa Gomez
More durable synching for FlatSync Mattia Formichetti Rasmus Thomsen
Port libipuz to Rust pranjal_ jrb
Improve Tracker SPARQL developer experience by creating “web IDE” for developing queries rachle08 Carlos Garnacho
Add support for the latest GIR attributes and gi-docgen formatting to Valadoc sudhanshuv1 Lorenz Wildberg

As part of the contributor’s acceptance into GSoC they are expected to actively participate in the Community Bonding period (May 1 – 26). The Community Bonding period is intended to help prepare contributors to start contributing at full speed starting May 27.

The new contributors will soon get their blogs added to Planet GNOME making it easy for the GNOME community to get to know them and the projects that they will be working on.

We would like to also thank our mentors for supporting GSoC and helping new contributors enter our project.

If you have any doubts, feel free to reply to this Discourse topic or message us privately at soc-admins@gnome.org

I really wish more designers were excited about using and designing free and open-source software.

Good design often means thoughtful, accessible, future-proof, frugal over slick, smoothly animated or "bleeding edge", yet most of the design discourse appears to be about gradient blurs, fancy color profiles, or the latest proprietary hardware.

Sorry designers, this discourse doesn't interest me. Let's talk about how we build apps that don't rot, or need the internet, or use too much energy.

I’ve been obsessed with lightsaber replicas and I’ve been modifying mine to make it more movie accurate:

  1. Sanded it to make it less shiny
  2. Painted the inner tube black
  3. Added The Force Awakens clamp plate to hide the Graflex logo
  4. Replaced the glass eye with a more accurate one.
  5. Replaced the “beer tab” with a flat one
  6. Cut and assembled my own plastic t-tracks to fix a weird gap between the clamp

Help…

I'm no Jobs stan, but I wonder if there are contemporary examples of statements as clear (and, compared to today's corporate rhetoric, as candid) as "Thoughts on Flash."

iamliam,
@iamliam@mastodon.design avatar

It's easy enough to write a passable statement about why your app, too, is inventing the concept of stories again. It's another thing to reach any level of candor about an actual organizational opinion.
