Saw a headline today that read “invitation-only audio chat app”. That’s a phone call.

🐘 ❤️ Introducing the Mastodon Favorites WordPress Plugin - display your favorite toots on your website.

I repurposed some previous code to create a new WordPress plugin to display your favorite toots. It is early and open. It will be on the directory in the near future. Please submit feedback and code!

1994: The internet is great. I just publish something once and everyone can see it.

2024: The internet is great. I just publish something six or seven times in different formats and character counts (with alt text) and a few people will see it due to a few rich white men’s ideas of what an algorithm should do to maximize ad impressions and engagement.

The “Data linked to you” for Threads on the iOS App Store is because they are using Instagram as their authentication service. The two accounts are inexorably linked. If you use IG at all Meta already has this access/info.

Instagram head Adam Mosseri confirms ActivityPub support not in Threads on day 1 but says they are committed to allowing people to take their audience with them.

(Btw, my toots about Threads is not an endorsement of Meta's foray into the fediverse per se. I am simply sharing things I find interesting.)

I do not post the same content to every social app. Nor do I use a bot to post for me. I gave up on that.

I view each of these services as bars or coffee shops; each have their vibe, their purpose, and different people in them.

Fantastic post from Karolina Szczur @fox in April on Calibre's blog on the Calm Web experience:

> “The Calm Web is a reimagining of the online world that envisions an Internet that is better for everyone. It’s a place that welcomes visitors, respects them, and does its utmost to delight them.”

Good morning internet!

1994: you've got mail!

1998: which site founder will get rich today?

2000: which site will go out of business today?

2005: have you heard of blogging?

2007: have you heard of tweeting?

2010: which app that replaces a perfectly good website are we downloading today?

2013: remember blogging?

2017: remember tweeting?

2020: You're muted!

2021 spring: buy Bitcoin! fall: sell Bitcoin!

2022: have you heard of the fediverse?

2024: who are we mad at today?

More people should follow @photomatt on Mastodon. During his presentation this week, he mentioned that there wasn’t much demand for ActivityPub in WordPress. And his account has a small following. Let’s show him we are here. And we want interop.

Btw, I think @pfefferle and the team are working hard and fast on improving WordPress’ implementation. It is good and getting better. But we want that to continue.

Please boost.

Most of the extensions for VSCode haven't been updated in well over a year. Is this true? Which extensions for VSCode are y'all using for code completion and documentation references for WordPress?

If you share the work of an artist, musician, photographer, etc on a social network - and that person is also on that network - don’t just type their name, @ mention them in the post. Attribution is a requirement while mentions are welcome, kind, and valuable.

When you're making the rounds of various Twitter-inspired systems, which do you go to first, which do you find the most interesting stuff on?

cdevroe, (edited )
@cdevroe@mastodon.social avatar

@davew I deleted my X account last March - so I haven’t checked it since. I don’t use Bluesky at all though I did sign up.

So, my focus is on Mastodon and Threads. Mastodon far and away has more interesting posts. Mostly people building or writing about the web or photography. Threads has been entertaining though. Once I can follow Threads accounts via ActivityPub I will.

Mastodon feels like a great forum whereas Threads feels too much like Instagram. Adam covets “creators” cuz $.

🎉 Project /threads now live!

🔗 https://ayco.io/threads -- a way to select social posts and (in the future) offer fine-grained topical subscriptions.

Depending on your requirements & resources, you can also have your own threads deployed on your site, either of the two options

  • personal.site/threads
  • threads.personal.site

This is the first of some tiny self-hostable apps I plan to work on, that can be composed together.

Thanks again to @nathan for having me as a guest on This Week in WordPress . We talked about the latest security release, Meetup, Richard Stallman's rider, and I chose @matthiasott's Own Your Web newsletter as my Pick of The Week. It was a nice chat with @michellefrechette and Marc Benzakein.

I jotted down some links of the things I mentioned and added them to my blog post: https://cdevroe.com/2024/02/06/this-week-in-wordpress-285/

Now that my website is back online, I can start publishing some things that I've been putting off. I have a new tag on my site for quicker little photo posts called “snaps”. I'll never reach @maique levels of posting, but I can try.

Any core peeps here? My RSS feed's guids have an extra forward slash in them on my local development site. E.g. <guid isPermaLink="false">http://cdevroe.local//2023/12/19/activitypub</guid>

I don't know where that slash is coming from. And I want to be certain it won't be present when I push to my live site.

Side note: The default guid in WP-powered RSS feeds seems to be ?p=INT -- this seems like a bad idea if the site uses cruft free URLs. Also, isPermalink should be true, no?
