The lie could only stand up against reality for so long.

failed, as it was always going to, because it was a stupid policy.

Those who proposed it should pay a political price and be banished from serious discussions. Their judgement is so bad they have nothing to offer.

A core principle of capitalism is capitalists never pay external costs. They are always left to society. For Conservatives that means only the rich should ever be compensated for external costs.

Good grief this is so depressing. Not the bit about praising Thatcher, that's just electioneering. The bit about missing the opportunities of BREXIT. That is suggesting Labour really are going to hand power back to the tories when they fail to find opportunities, as there are none.

So, I've hit one serious problem to switching from to : the version Shotwell - an application I use a lot - in Debian is an older version than that used by Ubuntu, and its database can't be downgraded. So far, I've failed to compile it from source, because of dependency hell.

@simon_brooke it's shotwell that keeps me on Ubuntu. I keep meaning to look for something better but the cost of exporting is too high. Good luck

Today's ride I found the holy grail of cycling. A closed road (for roads to be closed to pedestrians and cyclists in England requires a special traffic order, and signage, so almost never happens) so I got a pleasant few miles with no cars. Was lovely.

    Update for those following this:

    This drive home is more brutal than most. We spoke to father in law as we drove, told us he’s ready to go, wishes it wd happen “as peaceful & easy” as his wife went. Sigh. Not easy to hear. He’s under hospice care, nothing imminent though.

    Backstory: yrs of congestive heart failure finally taking its toll. He’s 97(!). Still sharp.

    We leave Portland for Medford, OR today, then to Sacramento, then home to SoCal.

    TY for your empathetic replies❤️

    My fingers are sore from messing about with a cable, one that should be sending some current from the dynamo on my bike's front wheel hub to my rear light.

    After much messing with a multimeter I found where it was broken - the bit that went inside the frame. Whatever, yanked it out. Even if I tried to tie bits of string to it, I'm not sure I'll be able to thread another cable through the frame again.

    Will end up cable-tying a replacement to the outside of the frame. It will look terrible,

    1/2

    chrisgerhard,
    @chrisgerhard@toot.bike avatar

    @sarajw someone will be along to tell you the dynamo is a generator as it is AC.

    I had loads of problems with a rear light and -ve/+ve as despite being mounted on a plastic mud guard there was a reurn back to the generator via the frame. Who knew SKS mudguards had conductive metal stips in the for this. I do now.

    chrisgerhard,
    @chrisgerhard@toot.bike avatar

    @sarajw dynamo lighting turned night riding for me from something I did but hated to something I would do for fun (as well as commuting). Love self generated power.

    I'm not sure an article that illustrates a dynamo light with an engineers vice is going to help dispell the myth that they are heavy though;-)

    If I wanted my content on there, I would post it myself. I don't. Take the hint.
