Something totally different on this morning's solo trail run: I didn't stop to take any photos! The few I took were while running. Also, comparing watch vs. phone recording times, see if you can guess which is which (answer in ALT).

The phone’s times, it’s using the Strava app set on trailrun. More details in the other Splits photo ALT

@jerzone Strava inflating paces by using moving time as the default is something that really annoys me (and even then it will think you’re stopped when moving slowly more than others for the moving time) - as I also don’t like Strava’s suggestion to set the activity as a race, I try and remember to trick it with a 1-s manual pause!

Cambridge #HalfMarathon day. Time 3:01:37 - so v. similar to last year - running pace almost identical in fact as there were a couple of stops (Trinity’s gravel path was not my friend). One thing about the wave starts is how the majority of my club have finished when I was at ~5 km 🙃. Will be sore in training this week, then will need to prepare for a few longer practice runs on the run up to the #LondonMarathon. Had lots of positive comments on my cow leggings!

Journey back to Scotland from Cumbria but we got a 10k in around Shap. All road (even if the dug did go off piste). Guess who was delighted to be going home (or it might be getting back for breakfast).

@Wen my sister has a collie. It decided it was going to be a lap dog and climb up the sofa and sit on ‘auntie‘ me - anthropomorphising only slightly, it’s face was so ‘me, of course I’m not big, I’m smol, not uncomfortable at all me being here at all, tee hee’.

@Tim_Eagon I was a bit surprised to find a piece of jewellery I liked and bought from a UK seller posted here, as usually promotion of such small businesses is very confined to IG. Of course, it was a bit fortuitous, popped into my feed from an art tag, and didn’t even have a url then I looked at the feed of that person to see what I actually bought. Books are different, those I see get recommended and buy all the time, especially now I’m on bookwrym.

My blog is running with , and I have a script which runs as pre-commit and checks all files.

Things like:

  • certain keywords are cursive
  • certain tags exist, based on content
  • invalid links
  • http links
  • code blocks are marked
  • preview image exists
  • preview text exists
  • ... some more

Is this something other people are interested in? Then I make the script configurable, and more formal.

clare_hooley,
@clare_hooley@mastodon.me.uk avatar

@ascherbaum bit of a side point, as it’s not in the markdown - but one thing I need to do - and should automate - is a check that I’ve removed the metadata from my images before accidentally revealing the location to the world when that would be an issue.

I’m considering integrating @telemetrydeck to get anonymized user events. It would greatly improve product planing, decision and development. Anyone strongly opposed to that? And why?

clare_hooley,
@clare_hooley@mastodon.me.uk avatar

@IceCubesApp @alex @PhilipKing @kenny113 @telemetrydeck Privacy is (more likely to be) just taken more seriously by fediverse people. I do already think there’s skirting of this issue with stuff being sent to third parties with no explicit jurisdiction-correct statement/consents with the OpenAI integration.

@heyheymomo mastodon docs say “Animated GIFs (GIFV) up to 16MB are converted to soundless MP4s. GIF dimensions must be less than 1MP (1280x720). You can also upload soundless MP4 and WebM files, which will be looped in clients the same way as an animated GIF. Only one animated GIF can be attached, per post.” Might not help…

Today is the day. I deleted my account, which I hadn’t really used for a few years anyway, and joined a UK-based instance (@clare_hooley). All painless, including the import of my data, and already federated for my first currently reading (https://ramblingreaders.org/user/clare_hooley/comment/239896). I am likely to want to share statuses directly via url, for people not on fedi, which isn’t the most obvious to get at directly, but easy enough after they come through into mastodon.

@BigAngBlack “with Garmin watches like the Forerunner 235 capable of logging track-based running for some time, the data won't have been influenced by the arrival of new Garmin features either.” feels utterly wrong to me. While my Garmin watch of that era mentioned supported it, only with the replacements ‘make perfect track traces’ etc. etc. did I bother to switch the activity type, so I imagine it’s highly influenced by those features coming online for upgrades to watches

I see that many of you have personal blogs that you post links to. For some of you, the link shows a preview image. For others it shows a gray box with the post title. Mine used to show up with the gray box, but now they just show up as text-only links when I post them here. Is there a WordPress configuration or ActivityPub plugin configuration that I need to change so preview images show up here?
Thx!

clare_hooley,
@clare_hooley@mastodon.me.uk avatar

@Mikal I know this confused me. Mine don’t show at first, which I think is a deliberate delay as federation propagates so the website host doesn’t get hit from every instance retrieving them, then they do show, then they go again as they get cleared from the cache of my instance a few days later. They can show for longer in other instances.

Strangers offering unsolicited advice or derailing conversations should be familiar to all who use social media. In our new for Android update, we’re testing a new feature aimed to curb these behaviours:

clare_hooley,
@clare_hooley@mastodon.me.uk avatar

@Mastodon Ok, so already here I am agonising if I’m ok to reply here (even set to unlisted), despite you actively encouraging replies/thoughts. Overall, I’m tending to feel negative on the idea of behavioural nudges on my posts that are set by others. I mostly actively want people to feel free to chat with me; I’m mostly shouting into the void too much already. Putting people off from chatting or raising something just slightly peripheral is too much for me.

@FlockOfCats @gruik this does tend to be taught as an example of a relatively clear cut UK/US English difference although as the results are showing it’s not as clear cut as it used to be. Saw a YouTube video with the title "My no nonsense journal".
Video was about her decorating said & showing off her expensive pens. If that's no nonsense I am a :dancing_panda: People r showing off their pretty entries on .
Am so annoyed by this - like it's some kind of popularity contest.
I get that it can be a creative outlet but omg why r we making something healing so competitive and performative???
shouldnt come with such pressure

clare_hooley,
@clare_hooley@mastodon.me.uk avatar

@liztai My journal/planner style is a lot of decoration - and I got sucked into ‘before the pen’s on IG (‘plan with me’s on YouTube) but not for years now. The planner influencers can be too much about affiliate links rather than inspiration now. And too many sticker business try and direct you to IG/youtube rather than actually showing product in their webshops too. I do occasionally post a picture of my planners/stickers/posh pens here, but I expect it go into the void!

    @noellemitchell the federation being new likely means it wouldn’t actually be federated to a lot of places so to me seems likely isn’t really much change in discoverability - would it help to more think of it as giving people who do already know about your blog another way to read it, and everyone doing that will be choosing that?

    There is a new feature of Mastodon that I wanted to highlight for you all.

    I had no use for the Lists feature before- but as of the recent 4.2 update, you can put some people you follow into a list- and then you can check a box in that list's details to NOT SHOW their posts in your main feed.

    This could totally change Mastodon for me, in the best way.

    I follow some newsy-political accounts, and often rush by them in the feed if I'm not in the mood to hear (more) bad news. Now I can put them in a list and not see them at all in and among the feed of real thoughts, pictures, artwork and jokes you amazing people share.

    And when I actually feel like engaging with the news/politics of the world, I can pop over to that list and see only that stuff in there.

    This way you can have customized feeds of different kinds of accounts, and just see your tried and true favorite people in the main feed.

    It's a multi-Mastodon-feed experience, separated by mood and preference.
    Which for me is brilliant!

    clare_hooley,
    @clare_hooley@mastodon.me.uk avatar

    @Floppy this is a feature I’d quite like to make use of and I’m not quite sure on update plans for us (I know going into 4.2.x changes a lot with search and admin notifications features).
