-- well I took these photos yesterday- Monday- even got the editing done last night, but no oomph to post before bed...lol
A couple of views from the around the acreage and in the still lots of snow around- though probably no more than half of usual, lots of bare spots as there always are, allowing glimpses of

@DemocracySpot thanks! That was Oct 20, 3 days later, winter arrived!
In your honour I went back to that folder and edited 4 more shots-- 3 from that same day and 1 from the 22, the Day Before Winter!
#commute #landscape #Alberta #October #Autumn

Looking across a grassy roadside ditch with blurry tan-gold dry grass, some brown weeds and a bare poplar sapling a few metres tall trying mostly in vain to block the view of the pasture beyond. The pasture is a mix of mid-height dry gold grass and lower grazed areas holding some green. Farther back are some low grey metal roofed open sheds and dark grey board wind fences. Rain blurs the trees much farther back and the sky is an overcast warm grey. The whole view is somewhat blurred, more so outside the centre.
Looking up a shiny wet dark paved 2 lane road with yellow dotted line in centre.to each side are orangey-gold grasses/reeds backed by dense but not too tall/old woodland. The trees are mixed, but more tamarack/larch than anything els- mostly bare of needles, but holding on to a bit of gold here and there. The sky is grey and echoes the highlights on the wet road. A few nearby trees and some bits of grass and road nearby hold some detail, most of the scene is blurred by rain and wet windshield, giving a dreamy look to it.
The 2 lane paved road is dry but the grey sky looks heavy with moisture and/or smoke. Roadsides are mowed mostly brown grass, backed by mixed woods of grey bare poplars and tall dark spruce. the same combination continues into the misted distance, and blurs around the edges.

Tomorrow is the between Autumn Equinox and Winter Solstice- this is the real reason for all the end of October/ beginning of November cultural/religious celebrations that have developed in various places. Traditionally for northern Europe this is the beginning of . It's been pretty accurate here in recent years- late Oct or early Nov has seen lasting for us. this year it started Oct 23

I like #puddles , pools, ponds, so this is a great time of year for me- #SpringMelt ! + since we keep alternating melting #weather with snow (more to come in the next few days after 18-19C/64-66F today) the puddle season is extended! Not so fond of mud, but oh well!

I shot this icy puddle the other day, where there'd been a much larger pool a week or two back- on viewing on the screen, I realised there was a face, then 2! Not creepy, I think they are #winter #spirits saying goodbye! #animism

A small irregularly shaped depression in the ground has filled with melt water-maybe still some winter snow turned to ice underneath- then variously frozen, re-melted as temperatures change so there is some liquid water, and several textures and densities of ice and slush at different depths. It's surrounded by a flat area melted out of the snow which has dried leaves over flattened grass, moss, fine shrubs etc, and the dark shadows of trees out of frame except for the very bases of a couple, come toward the viewer, angling to each side around the puddle which is catching a bit of sun.

I actually got this readyin time, but by then it was late and since it had been a work day, no more oomph to post ( I take text and alt text seriously, no quick matter! lol)
We had snowy days and cold (seasonally adjusted- days in mid minus teens C) so views of covered beds, and cool with a shadowy selfie + Aloe taking a look at a Haworthia- indoors of course!

Very exciting afternoon cutting firewood on the acreage- in the woods behind the house: it was a 5 day! 2 spotted, one almost for the first time for me , and first photos/videos (a wesael in winter colour!), the other an every day event (squirrel-several, actually); one more heard running away (moose), and two noted from scat (deer, hare)-one of those for nearly the first time this winter (Snowshoe Hare)- all in all, exciting! Pics/vids to come..

I started this collage for Six on Saturday, didn't finish (work days) then thought I'd add one more image and make - I finished yesterday but by night had no oomph to post! Now it might be !
I already had the square edits for 6, so I made it vertical with the 7th- is this shape ok for people to view? Is it good on phones? I only use laptop, so I always prefer landscape orientation images... details in alt /replies

This video is a short clip from a video taken a number of years ago in the mountains- the sun hit the water in a way that dazzled the camera sensor, creating this effect of purple rain!
If you are old like me, or a Prince fan, purple rain is going to make you think of his big hit by that name! Do you think this was a message?? 😆

Cool and a glow all afternoon, as we often have in mid-winter. Still mostly above average temps, and moderate snowfall, though we got a few more sticky inches last night (our normal at this time of year should be dry! 'warmer' winters are not all positive)

Day 17 that was Sunday, so, a work day and so the pic is from the moving car on the I was talking a little to @richardgrant a while back when an earlier photo in this thread showed some Tamarack / Larix laricina ( I had a question mark on the id then, just because with snow/frost/ice covering the trees, it was hard to see what trees were there). This view shows Tamaracks again--continued:

1)Some blab, videos + photos of a couple of tropical plants that I had to rescue- from me! I had a bit too much to say about soils, watering, etc, so I made a blog post with the 2 videos + a bonus vid of a flowering cactus.
I'm testing Wordpress, so I posted the same thing there and at blogger. The videos are on YouTube, Spectra links in replies.

@plants

Semi close view of backlit leaves of Peperomia albovittata Piccolo Banda. From this direction, in this light, the almost heart-shaped leaves appear medium green with blood red venation. At this stage of growth, the leaves are coming nearly from the soil with very little stem.
Murdannia loriformis Bright Star a small plant with strap shaped leaves that taper to a point, a bit wider in middle. they are a medium slightly yellow-green with a wide band across the centre of silver-grey-green. Leaves come from a central rosette with a short stem and new rosettes come from the base. I has a delicate branched flowering stem with one tiny open white flower and a number of buds. Around the base of the plant are tiny green leaves with red reverse, the sprawling stems of Peperomia verticillata. Most of the plant is in shade, with a shaft of sunlight hitting the foremost leaf in the centre, and the open flower.

I've seen one to several of the grouse a number of times this winter around the southeast end of the acreage. This time I saw a couple heading across into the ditch by the neighbours', then later saw one coming back to zoom across the road high into poplar trees, where I saw there were already a couple of others, feeding on dormant buds.

@NatureMC very true in art- if you are afraid to make mistakes you will not accomplish much! One practical tip that comes from that idea: when people are starting, they should not use expensive materials they will be afraid to 'waste' (later maybe you learn to work with your mistakes more, so you are not losing too much material!0

    1. I spotted a in the woods on the acreage. May not sound exciting, but I've never had a good sighting before (more in replies): they are stealthy + presumably mostly nocturnal. So it was very cool to see this one, and in its winter pelage (seasonal white fur) : even more cool! Vid links from YouTube and Spectra (smaller files) another vid + pics to follow

    1. a capture from the second video, we see almost the whole body of the weasel as it emerges from one of the burrows.
This sighting was exciting, since in all the years I've been back here (since 2007) ,while we see tracks of these little critters in the snow, at times, and I once saw the tail end of one disappearing into a hole by the furnace in Mom's old house--it was raiding the cat food! and once saw from the car one dash across the road- that's it!
