@RickiTarr they didn’t wear sunscreen and smoked a lot.

After the past eighteen months, I've come around on the idea that programmers should have a union. It won’t happen because there are too many weird libertarians and temporarily inconvenienced millionaires in tech, but in an ideal world, I think it would exist.

We've somehow convinced ourselves that we aren't labor, but we sure get treated like we are. Alternatively, the United States could have better labor laws, but that seems even more unlikely to happen.

You know if you really want to hire someone to make you a Mac Assed Mac App, the guy who coined the term (me) is pretty good at that and frequently available 🤷‍♂️

I feel like I haven't marketed myself well enough haha.

I made a post about looking for iOS work on LinkedIn. I appreciate any boosting/connecting anyone can do. https://www.linkedin.com/posts/activity-7089327241536421889-MQma?utm_source=share&utm_medium=member_desktop

Just posting again that I am still available for or full time employment. I’ve been doing development for 15 years, including at and am comfortable working on a team or doing entire apps.

I also know and have gotten quite good at it, which means I can work on backend and mobile together or separately if that’s what you need.

To be honest, I’m a real get. Someone should hire me.

I just noticed @ivory has a feature in settings for reminding you to add alt-text to images.

I think when your editor starts taking 60 seconds to launch, there’s no clear way it can ever be fixed, and it hasn’t had a release in two years, that’s a pretty good indication it’s time to look at alternatives.

It’s a shame because TextMate had so much going for it if it had just kept up with the times. I really do get why people love it so much.

The Macintosh Portable cost roughly $18,000 in today’s money, and weighed 16 pounds. I probably would not have been taking it to coffee shops either.

Two years later, they released the PowerBook 100, which more or less reads as a modern laptop.

I’m not saying Apple Vision Pro is going to take off like laptops did, where you will start seeing them in public all the time, but if you can’t see the comparison I think that is a real lack of imagination.

At this point, I hope never fixes this layout bug in Terminal.app, because it gives me a sense of stability in a world gone mad.

I know money can’t buy happiness or solve anxiety, but also if I had an amount of money to where I didn’t have to worry about ever going broke, I think I would be a lot less stressed and anxious.

Do you organize your apps on your iPhone into folders beyond your first home screen or mostly just let things go to the app library?

Hire me for freelance on your or project. I’m a smart, product focused engineer with 15 years of experience at places like Apple, Sonos, and startups of all sizes.

I have immediate availability now, but that could change at any time.

Ordered a Mastery bridge for my 360/6. The only complaint I have with this is that it can be a bit rattly, and I guess a lot of that is down to the bridge design.

The Mastery looks visually identical with the cover plate, requires no modification to the guitar, and supposedly makes a pretty big difference.

@eyesquash Ohh, I think I've seen those! This is meant to be a drop in replacement, thankfully. I do love flatwounds, but complicated bridges like that scare me.

The thing nobody tells you about playing an instrument is that if you’re trying to get better, you’re going to feel pretty depressed about your progress sometimes.

I’ve been thinking about this thing I heard Julien Baker say — “I’m not an example of how good music can be, I’m an example of how fun music can be.”

I love that.

I don’t really care about this visionOS Netflix thing, but man I wish they’d integrate with the TV app on tvOS. I watch very little Netflix because I can’t add things to my up next and then forget they exist.

This isn’t me picking on my European friends, just an actual question: how much did you learn about European colonialism in school?

I’d say we definitely did not learn about some of the worst things the USA has done, but seeing people talk online, thinking American expansionism is equivalent to the scale of 400 years of classic European colonialism, makes me think maybe they don’t learn much about it?

ChatGPT does a lot well, I'm not knocking it. However, I often want ChatGPT to be a frontend to a database of all the world’s knowledge that can understand and make sense of it for me based on natural language.

The problem is not just that it isn't that, it's that it does such a good job pretending it is and never admitting when it's just making things up, that it can easily trick you into believing that it is.

Media literacy should be a required class in high school, like English or math. I am fairly certain there is at least one class we are making kids take that is less valuable.

If the EU wants to make everyones lives better, they should make it illegal to sell a cable with a USB-C connector that doesn't support at least USB 3.1.

What would be the downside if they just let the Instagram app run on macOS? It would certainly solve all of my issues with live streaming to it or filming Reels.

I hate that so many companies who are never going to make a native Mac app won't let us run their iOS apps on our Apple Silicon Macintosh computers.

“Why is Utah so weird?”

I mean, he says right at the top, it’s Mormons, and having 100 years of a Mormon voting majority, but seriously, Utah is so weird. I drove through the entire country and it was by far the most surreal place I went.

Dirty soda shops, weird little collections of houses in the middle of the desert with a church in the middle. it’s the whole vibe. I feel like you have to go there to understand.

collin,
@collin@ruby.social avatar

You will also never get someone who is Mormon and grew up there to admit how weird Utah is.

It’s this little theocracy in the middle of the desert that has all of these laws and practices no one else does, and doesn’t seem to even really make pretense about separation of church and state being a thing.
